Title: Roving with a Digital Visual Library: Increased Learning Opportunities at Carlsbad Caverns National Park
At Carlsbad Caverns National Park, park rangers blended traditional personal interpretation with technology to showcase park-based research and to advance science literacy among visitors. Interpreters and Scientists Working on Our Parks (iSWOOP) provided interpreters with professional development and a selection of visualizations from scientists’ research on Brazilian free-tailed bats and their habitat at Carlsbad Caverns. After using tablets containing these visualizations for informal interpretive interactions, the interpreters responded to an open-ended survey. The authors examined interpreters’ responses, finding that interpreters regarded tablets as helpful in accomplishing several interpretive goals, especially in particular locations. Interpreters were strategic in initiating and sustaining interactions. Visitors’ reactions were positive; nevertheless, there were challenges indicating that this new form of interpretation is worthy of further research.  more » « less

  1. Identity and belonging are key components to student longevity in STEM and are particularly important for retaining BIPOC, low-income, and first generation students. Previous work emphasizes the importance of scientific competence, research performance, and recognition by scientific community members as key to building a STEM identity that persists (Carlone & Johnson, 2007), increasing the likelihood of retention into the STEM workforce. The Keck Geology Consortium REU, with funding from NSF, developed the Gateway program for rising sophomores in 2017 to support and build these three components of science identity for underrepresented undergraduates in the geosciences. Here we present stories from the Glacier National Park, Montana environmental geoscience Gateway project, alongside consortium-wide data, and consider ways in which scientific identity is developed. In summers 2018 and 2022 we brought together groups of 5-8 students, mostly from underrepresented groups, all of whom were finishing their first year of college. Students were from a variety of backgrounds and institutions, but primarily from SLACs, and had little/no prior research experience. Projects lasted 5 weeks, with one week of pre-field knowledge and skill development (competence) two weeks in the field in eastern Glacier National Park collecting data, and two weeks at the Continental Scientific Drilling (CSD) laboratory at the University of Minnesota analyzing sediment cores. Students presented their research at subsequent Geological Society of America meetings (performance and recognition). Survey results and anecdotal stories suggest all three key aspects of STEM identity-building were supported by the projects. In addition to identity and values activities at the project start, blogging and reflection activities supported development and integration of a science identity. Performance and recognition opportunities were threaded throughout; students shared their research with the public (Park visitors encountered in the field), with Park Rangers/Interpretive staff (during informal presentations), and with staff, students, and visiting scientists at the CSD (daily interactions in the lab). These less-official forms of performance and recognition greatly contributed to the students’ sense of ownership and expertise.

Abstract Since 2001, beetles have killed two‐thirds of the pine trees in British Columbia, Canada, decimating the predominant commercial tree species in one of the world's largest timber economies. Attempts to construct and circulate computer models of the infestation and its aftermaths, however, have obscured destabilizing changes across state institutions for environmental research. Juxtaposing literary conceptualizations of distributed authorship with ethnographic critiques of technoscientific bureaucracy, this article examines how the proliferation of computer models in contemporary resource planning institutions has altered the ways experts participate in and sanction interpretive communities. The dynamic conceptualizations of authorship produced through these exchanges challenge existing portraits of anticipatory governance, an emergent mode of administration that often relies on models for procedural implementation and narrative framing even as it circumscribes modellers’ voices to specific moments of interpretation and critique. While modellers make claims on distant futures to provoke discussion among diverse actors, later interpreters may highlight a model's apparent precision or its radical uncertainties to defer criticisms of problematic interventions and government restructuring. Such modes of attribution have deepened many scientists’ sense of estrangement from the interpretive communities their models help to engender.

  3. We transport multi-stage programming from functional to relational programming, with novel constructs to give programmers control over staging and non-determinism. We stage interpreters written as relations, in which the programs under interpretation can contain holes representing unknown expressions or values. By compiling the known parts without interpretive overhead and deferring interpretation to run time only for the unknown parts, we compound the benefits of staging (e.g., turning interpreters into compilers) and relational interpretation (e.g., turning functions into relations and synthesizing from sketches). We extend miniKanren with staging constructs and apply the resulting multi-stage language to relational interpreters for subsets of Racket and miniKanren as well as a relational recognizer for context-free grammars. We demonstrate significant performance gains across multiple synthesis problems, systematically comparing unstaged and staged computation, as well as indicatively comparing with an existing hand-tuned relational interpreter.

  4. Abstract Background Public green spaces are important for human health, but they may expose visitors to ticks and tick-borne pathogens. We sought to understand, for the first time, visitors’ exposure risk and drivers of tick-preventative behavior in three popular parks on Staten Island, New York City, NY, USA, by integrating tick hazard and park visitors’ behaviors, risk perceptions and knowledge. Methods We conducted tick sampling in three parks, across three site types (open spaces, the edge of open spaces, and trails) and three within-park habitats (maintained grass, unmaintained herbaceous, and leaf litter) to estimate tick density during May-August 2019. Human behavior was assessed by observations of time spent and activity type in each site. We integrated the time spent in each location by park visitors and the tick density to estimate the probability of human-tick encounter. To assess visitors’ tick prevention behaviors, a knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) survey was administered. Results Three tick species ( Ixodes scapularis , Amblyomma americanum and Haemaphysalis longicornis) were collected. For all species, the density of nymphs was greatest in unmaintained herbaceous habitats and trails, however, the fewest people entered these hazardous locations. The KAP survey revealed that most respondents ( N  = 190) identified parks as the main location for tick exposure, but most believed they had minimal risk for tick encounter. Consequently, many visitors did not conduct tick checks. People were most likely to practice tick checks if they knew multiple prevention methods and perceived a high likelihood of tick encounter. Conclusions By integrating acarological indices with park visitor behaviors, we found a mismatch between areas with higher tick densities and areas more frequently used by park visitors. However, this exposure risk varied among demographic groups, the type of activities and parks, with a higher probability of human-tick encounters in trails compared to open spaces. Furthermore, we showed that people’s KAP did not change across parks even if parks represented different exposure risks. Our research is a first step towards identifying visitor risk, attitudes, and practices that could be targeted by optimized messaging strategies for tick bite prevention among park visitors.

The Language Science Station (LSS) is a research and engagement laboratory operating at the Planet Word museum in Washington, DC, representing a unique partnership between language researchers and a museum dedicated to language. The LSS invites Planet Word guests – ranging from local to international visitors – to participate in research studies and engage in educational activities with student language scientists from diverse academic backgrounds. In doing so, we broaden participation in the language sciences among both the researchers and the participant population. This paper outlines the goals, values, and structure of the LSS, highlighting our dual emphases on research and engagement. We focus on several aspects of the project. These include our novel multi-university researcher-museum partnership, the different considerations that we find are necessary for conducting research in a museum setting compared to the laboratory, and our training of researchers and student research assistants. The paper also provides reflections from students on their interactions with museum visitors. We share our experiences with the broader scholarly community in an effort to lower barriers for other behavioral scientists interested in combining research and engagement in public venues.
