An electric field‐assisted
Cellulose nanocrystal (CNCs)‐reinforced poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanocomposites were prepared using twin screw extrusion followed by injection molding. Masterbatch approach was used to achieve more efficient dispersion of CNCs in PLA matrix. Modified CNCs (b‐CNCs) were prepared using benzoic acid as a nontoxic material through a green esterification method in a solvent‐free technique. Transmission electron microscopy images did not exhibit significant differences in the structure of b‐CNCs as compared with unmodified CNCs. However, a reduction of 6.6–15.5% in the aspect ratio of b‐CNCs was observed. The fracture surface of PLA‐b‐CNCs nanocomposites exhibited rough and irregular pattern which confirmed the need of more energy for fracture. Pristine CNCs showed a decrease in the thermal stability of nanocomposites, however, b‐CNCs nanocomposites exhibited higher thermal stability than pure PLA. The average storage modulus was improved by 38 and 48% by addition of CNCs and b‐CNCs in PLA, respectively. The incorporation of b‐CNCs increased Young's modulus, ultimate tensile stress, elongation at break, and impact strength by 27.02, 10.90, 4.20, and 32.77%, respectively, however, CNCs nanocomposites exhibited a slight decrease in ultimate strength and elongation at break. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT in situ dispersion of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in polymer nanocomposites, fabricated through stereolithography three‐dimensional (3D) printing technique, was demonstrated. The introduction of MWCNTs increased the elasticity modulus of the polymer resin by 77%. Furthermore, the use of an electric field forin situ MWCNT dispersion helped improving the average elongation at break of the samples with MWCNTs by 32%. The electric field also increased the ultimate tensile strength of the MWCNT reinforced nanocomposites by 42%. An increase of over 20% in the ultimate tensile strength ofin situ dispersed MWCNT nanocomposites over the pure polymer material was observed. Finally, it was demonstrated that the magnitude and direction of the electrical conductivity of MWCNT nanocomposites can be engineered through the application ofin situ electric fields during 3D printing. An increase of 50% in the electrical conductivity was observed when MWCNTs were introduced, while the application of the electric field further improved the electrical conductivity by 26%. The presented results demonstrated the feasibility of tuning both electrical and mechanical properties of MWCNT reinforced polymer nanocomposites usingin situ electrical field‐assisted 3D printing. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a commercially available bio‐based polymer that is a potential alternative to many commodity petrochemical‐based polymers. However, PLA's thermomechanical properties limit its use in many applications. Incorporating polymer‐grafted cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) is one potential route to improving these mechanical properties. One key challenge in using these polymer‐grafted nanoparticles is to understand which variables associated with polymer grafting are most important for improving composite properties. In this work, poly(ethylene glycol)‐grafted CNCs are used to study the effects of polymer grafting density and molecular weight on the properties of PLA composites. All CNC nanofillers are found to reinforce PLA above the glass transition temperature, but non‐grafted CNCs and CNCs grafted with short PEG chains (<2 kg mol−1) are found to cause significant embrittlement, generally resulting in less than 3% elongation‐at‐break. By grafting higher molecular weight PEG (10 kg mol−1) onto the CNCs at a grafting density where the polymer chains are predicted to be in the semi‐dilute polymer brush conformation (~0.1 chains nm−2), embrittlement can be avoided.

ABSTRACT The thermal aging behavior of poly(3,3,3‐trifluoropropyl)methylsiloxane was investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis and isothermal aging tests, and the results indicated the degradation mechanism II, oxidation scission of the side groups, played a more important role when the temperature was below 350 °C. The addition of ceria had significantly improved the thermal stability of fluorosilicone rubber (FSR) by inhibiting the oxidation scission. Moreover, two types of ceria including laminar‐structure ceria (LS‐CeO2) and nanoparticle ceria (N‐CeO2) were prepared and surface was modified by KH570 and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope, and X‐ray diffractometer. FSR incorporated with modified LS‐CeO2and N‐CeO2revealed a significant improvement on the heat resistant properties. In particular, after having been thermal oxidative aged for 70 h at 250 °C, FSR containing 2 wt % of modified N‐CeO2maintained 72.6% of tensile strength and 63.9% of elongation at break, respectively, while FSR without ceria completely failed. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Algae is a promising sustainable feedstock for the generation of bio-crude oil, which is a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, through the thermochemical process of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). However, this process also generates carbon particles (algae-derived carbon, ADC) as a significant byproduct. Herein, we report a brand-new and value-added use of ADC particles as a reinforcing agent for epoxy matrix composites (EMCs). ADC particles were synthesized through HTL processing of Chlorella vulgaris (a green microalgae) and characterized for morphology, average size, specific surface area, porosity, and functional groups. The ADC particles were subsequently integrated into a representative epoxy resin (EPON 862) as a reinforcing filler at loading levels of 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, and 2% by weight. The tensile, flexural, and Izod impact properties, as well as the thermal stability, of the resulting EMCs were evaluated. It is revealed that the ADC particles are a sustainable and effective reinforcing agent for EMCs at ultra-low loading. Specifically, the ADC-reinforced EMC with 1 wt.% ADC showed improvements of ~24%, ~30%, ~31%, and ~57% in tensile strength, Young’s modulus, elongation at break, and work of fracture (WOF), respectively, and improvements of ~10%, ~37%, ~24%, and ~39% in flexural strength, flexural modulus, flexural elongation at break, and flexural WOF, respectively, as well as an improvement of ~54% in Izod impact strength, compared to those corresponding properties of neat epoxy. In the meantime, the thermal decomposition temperatures at 60% and 80% weight loss of the abovementioned ADC-reinforced EMC increased from 410 °C to 415 °C and from 448 °C to 515 °C in comparison with those of neat epoxy. This study highlighted the potential of sustainable ADC particles as a reinforcing agent in the field of polymer matrix composite materials, which represented a novel and sustainable approach that would mitigate greenhouse gas remission and reduce reliance on nonrenewable reinforcing fillers in the polymer composite industry.more » « less

This experimental study investigates the effects of dispersion techniques on the mechanical properties of POSS‐epoxy nanocomposites. The POSS is dispersed into the epoxy resin by stoichiometrically varying the weight fraction from 0.5 to 10 wt% and materials are prepared using three different dispersion techniques. Various mechanical properties are reported as functions of processing parameters and weight fractions. It is found that the nanocomposites with highly dispersed POSS show higher modulus and toughness values. For example, nanocomposites prepared by ultrasonication show increases in elastic and flexural modulus values by average amounts of 23% and 15%, respectively. Also, it is found that fracture toughness values increased for all three processing techniques, with the highest increase by an average of 50% at 8 wt% of POSS inclusion for nanocomposites prepared by ultrasonication. TEM images of the nanocomposites demonstrate that the properties are also affected by the formation of soft domains at higher loading levels of POSS. Further evidence on the soft domains is found in the variations of
T g. FTIR spectroscopy shows evidence of SiOSi stretching, again suggesting the formation of compliant domains due to POSS‐POSS agglomeration. POLYM. COMPOS., 39:E2445–E2453, 2018. © 2018 Society of Plastics Engineers
