  1. Abstract

A recent study has shown a robust relationship between the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and inter‐decadal variations in autumn precipitation over North Central China (NCC). However, the physical processes underlying these inter‐decadal precipitation variations are not fully understood. Here we analyse multi‐member ensembles of atmospheric reanalysis and model simulations to examine the atmospheric and precipitation responses to sea surface temperature (SST) forcing. Despite the large inter‐member spread resulting from atmospheric internal variability, the model simulations forced by the observed SSTs show an important role of mid‐latitude atmospheric circulation in influencing the inter‐decadal precipitation variations over NCC. We also analyse the sensitivity experiments using three atmospheric models forced by the Inter‐decadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO)/PDO‐like SST fields. The results suggest that the SST anomalies associated with a negative IPO phase can induce anomalous positive pressure anomalies over the East Asia‐Japan‐North Pacific region, which weakens the East Asian trough (EAT) and produces southerly advection of warm and moist air into NCC, leading to increased precipitation there. This study provides a depiction of how the IPO/PDO‐associated SSTs induce inter‐decadal oscillations in mid‐latitude atmospheric circulations, which in turn cause inter‐decadal precipitation variations over NCC.

  2. Understanding historical trends in temperature, precipitation, and runoff is important but incomplete for developing adaptive measures to climate change to sustain fragile ecosystems in cold and arid regions, including the Balagaer River watershed on the Mongolian Plateau of northeast China. The objective of this study was to detect such trends in this watershed from 1959 to 2017. The detection was accomplished using a Mann-Kendall sudden change approach at annual and seasonal time scales. The results indicated that the abrupt changes in temperature preceded that in either runoff or precipitation; these abrupt changes occurred between 1970 and 2004. Significant (α = 0.05) warming trends were found at the minimum temperatures in spring (0.041 °C a−1), summer (0.037 °C a−1), fall (0.027 °C a−1), and winter (0.031 °C a−1). In contrast, significant decreasing trends were found in the precipitation (−1.27 mm a−1) and runoff (−0.069 mm a−1) in the summer. Marginally increasing trends were found in the precipitation in spring (0.18 mm a−1) and fall (0.032 mm a−1), whereas an insignificant decreasing trend was found in the runoffs in these two seasons. Both precipitation and runoff in the wet season exhibited a significant decreasing trend, whereas in the dry season, they exhibited a marginally increasing trend. Sudden changes in spring runoff and sudden rises in temperature are the main causes of sudden changes in basin rainfall.

  3. Abstract

Eastern Asia is a prime location for the study of intracontinental tectono‐magmatic activity. For instance, the origin of widespread intraplate volcanism has been one of the most debated aspects of East Asian geological activity. Measurements of attenuation of teleseismic phases may provide additional constraints on the source regions of volcanism by sampling the upper mantle. This study uses data from three seismic arrays to constrain lateral variations in teleseismicPwave attenuation beneath the Central Asian Orogenic Belt and the North China Craton. We invert relative observations of attenuation for a 2‐D map of variations in attenuation along with data and model uncertainties by applying a Hierarchical Bayesian method. As expected, low attenuation is observed beneath the Ordos block. High attenuation is observed beneath most of the volcanoes (e.g., the Middle Gobi volcano, the Bus Obo volcano, and the Datong volcano) in the study area, and estimated asthenospheric Qp values span from 95 to 200. These values are within the range of globally average asthenosphere. We infer that these volcanoes may tap melt from ambient asthenosphere and occur where the lithosphere is thin, which is consistent with previous petrologic studies. More complex mantle drivers of volcanism are not rejected but are not needed to explain eruptions in this area. In contrast, at the Xilinhot‐Abaga volcanic site, the observed low attenuation (as low as beneath the Ordos block) excludes a typical shallow melting column. Fluids from the subducted Pacific plate may initiate the deep melting and would be consistent with petrological constraints.

  4. A series of tectonic activities induced by the subduction of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean (PAO) in the Palaeozoic have been recorded in the North China Craton (NCC). Sedimentary strata provide some precious records to reconstruct the basin evolution in the NCC. In this study, we carried out detrital zircon LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb dating, sandstone modal analysis, bulk‐rock major, and trace elemental measurements for the Sunjiagou and Liujiagou formations in the eastern Ordos Basin to trace the material source. The results show that the sedimentary rocks were mostly sourced from active continental margins. The detrital zircon ages of the Sunjiagou and Liujiagou formations spread from >3,000 to 250 Ma with peaks of main age populations at 2,508, 1,890, 430, and 270 Ma. Based on the age comparison and the southward palaeocurrents, we consider that the source material of these sedimentary rocks comes from the northern margin of the NCC. This in turn indicates that the amalgamation of the PAO and the NCC should have finished at least by the end of the Late Permian.
