The dynamic weather conditions that migrating birds experience during flight likely influence where they stop to rest and refuel, particularly after navigating inhospitable terrain or large water bodies, but effects of weather on stopover patterns remain poorly studied. We examined the influence of broad-scale weather conditions encountered by nocturnally migrating Nearctic-Neotropical birds during northward flight over the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) on subsequent coastal stopover distributions. We categorized nightly weather patterns using historic maps and quantified region-wide densities of birds in stopover habitat with data collected by 10 weather surveillance radars from 2008 to 2015. We found spring weather patterns over the GOM were most often favorable for migrating birds, with winds assisting northward flight, and document regional stopover patterns in response to specific unfavorable weather conditions. For example, Midwest Continental High is characterized by strong northerly winds over the western GOM, resulting in high-density concentrations of migrants along the immediate coastlines of Texas and Louisiana. We show, for the first time, that broad-scale weather experienced during flight influences when and where birds stop to rest and refuel. Linking synoptic weather patterns encountered during flight with stopover distributions contributes to the emerging macro-ecological understanding of bird migration, which is critical to consider in systems undergoing rapid human-induced changes.

BirdVox-full-night: A Dataset and Benchmark for Avian Flight Call Detection
This article addresses the automatic detection of vocal, nocturnally migrating birds from a network of acoustic sensors. Thus far, owing to the lack of annotated continuous recordings, existing methods had been benchmarked in a binary classification setting (presence vs. absence). Instead, with the aim of comparing them in event detection, we release BirdVox-full-night, a dataset of 62 hours of audio comprising 35402 flight calls of nocturnally migrating birds, as recorded from 6 sensors. We find a large performance gap between energybased detection functions and data-driven machine listening. The best model is a deep convolutional neural network trained with data augmentation. We correlate recall with the density of flight calls over time and frequency and identify the main causes of false alarm

Automated classification of organisms to species based on their vocalizations would contribute tremendously to abilities to monitor biodiversity, with a wide range of applications in the field of ecology. In particular, automated classification of migrating birds' flight calls could yield new biological insights and conservation applications for birds that vocalize during migration. In this paper we explore state-of-the-art classification techniques for large-vocabulary bird species classification from flight calls. In particular, we contrast a “shallow learning” approach based on unsupervised dictionary learning with a deep convolutional neural network combined with data augmentation. We show that the two models perform comparably on a dataset of 5428 flight calls spanning 43 different species, with both significantly outperforming an MFCC baseline. Finally, we show that by combining the models using a simple late-fusion approach we can further improve the results, obtaining a state-of-the-art classification accuracy of 0.96.more » « less

Abstract AimTwo important environmental hazards for nocturnally migrating birds are artificial light at night (ALAN) and air pollution, with ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) considered to be especially harmful. Nocturnally migrating birds are attracted to ALAN during seasonal migration, which could increase exposure to PM2.5. Here, we examine PM2.5concentrations and PM2.5trends and the spatial correlation between ALAN and PM2.5within the geographical ranges of the world’s nocturnally migrating birds. LocationGlobal. Time period1998–2018. Major taxa studiedNocturnally migrating birds. MethodsWe intersected a global database of annual mean PM2.5concentrations over a 21‐year period (1998–2018) with the geographical ranges (breeding, non‐breeding and regions of passage) of 225 nocturnally migrating bird species in three migration flyways (Americas,n = 143; Africa–Europe,n = 36; and East Asia–Australia,n = 46). For each species, we estimated PM2.5concentrations and trends and measured the correlation between ALAN and PM2.5, which we summarized by season and flyway. ResultsCorrelations between ALAN and PM2.5were significantly positive across all seasons and flyways. The East Asia–Australia flyway had the strongest ALAN–PM2.5correlations within regions of passage, the highest PM2.5concentrations across all three seasons and the strongest positive PM2.5trends on the non‐breeding grounds and within regions of passage. The Americas flyway had the strongest negative air pollution trends on the non‐breeding grounds and within regions of passage. The breeding grounds had similarly negative air pollution trends within the three flyways. Main conclusionsThe combined threats of ALAN and air pollution are greatest and likely to be increasing within the East Asia–Australia flyway and lowest and likely to be decreasing within the Americas and Africa–Europe flyways. Reversing PM2.5trends in the East Asia–Australia flyway and maintaining negative PM2.5trends in the Americas and Africa–Europe flyways while reducing ALAN levels would likely be beneficial for the nocturnally migrating bird populations in each region.more » « less

Synopsis Birds exhibit a variety of migration strategies. Because sustained flapping flight requires the production of elevated levels of energy compared to typical daily activities, migratory birds are well-documented to have several physiological adaptations to support the energy demands of migration. However, even though mitochondria are the source of ATP that powers flight, the respiratory performance of the mitochondria is almost unstudied in the context of migration. We hypothesized that migratory species would have higher mitochondrial respiratory performance during migration compared to species that do not migrate. To test this hypothesis, we compared variables related to mitochondrial respiratory function between two confamilial bird species—the migratory Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis) and the non-migratory Northern Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos). Birds were captured at the same location along the Alabama Gulf Coast, where we assumed that Gray Catbirds were migrants and where resident Northern Mockingbirds live year-round. We found a trend in citrate synthase activity, which suggests that Gray Catbirds have a greater mitochondrial volume in their pectoralis muscle, but we observed no other differences in mitochondrial respiration or complex enzymatic activities between individuals from the migrant vs. the non-migrant species. However, when we assessed the catbirds included in our study using well-established indicators of migratory physiology, birds fell into two groups: a group with physiological parameters indicating a physiology of birds engaged in migration and a group with the physiology of birds not migrating. Thus, our comparison included catbirds that appeared to be outside of migratory condition. When we compared the mitochondrial performance of these three groups, we found that the mitochondrial respiratory capacity of migrating catbirds was very similar to that of Northern Mockingbirds, while the catbirds judged to be not migrating were lowest. One explanation for these observations is these species display very different daily flight behaviors. While the mockingbirds we sampled were not breeding nor migrating, they are highly active birds, living in the open and engaging in flapping flights throughout each day. In contrast, Gray Catbirds live in shrubs and fly infrequently when not migrating. Such differences in baseline energy needs likely confounded our attempt to study adaptations to migration.more » « less

Abstract Migrating landbirds adjust their flight and stopover behaviors to efficiently cross inhospitable geographies, such as the Gulf of Mexico and the Sahara Desert. In addition to these natural barriers, birds may increasingly encounter anthropogenic barriers created by large‐scale changes in land use. One such barrier could be the Corn Belt in the Midwest United States, where 76.4% of precolonial vegetation (forest and grassland combined) has been replaced by agricultural and urban areas, primarily corn fields. We used 5 years of data from 47 weather radar stations in the United States to compare the population‐level flight patterns of migrating landbirds crossing the Corn Belt and the forested landscapes south and north of it in spring and autumn. We also examined the impacts of the Corn Belt relative to the Gulf of Mexico on the stopover behavior of migrating birds by comparing changes in the proportion of migrants that stop to rest (stopover‐to‐passage ratio [SPR]) relative to distance from both barriers. Birds showed increased meridional airspeeds and stronger selection for tailwinds when crossing the Corn Belt compared with forested landscapes. For birds crossing the Gulf of Mexico, the highest proportion of migrants stopped to rest after crossing the Gulf, and SPR decreased sharply as distance from the shoreline increased. We did not find this pattern after migrants crossed the Corn Belt, although the SPR increased in the Corn Belt as birds approached the down‐route forest boundary in both seasons. This weaker pattern for stopover propensity after crossing the Corn Belt is likely due to its narrower width, the availability of small forest patches throughout the Corn Belt, and the subset of species affected, compared with the gulf. We recommend restoring stepping stones of forest in the Corn Belt and protecting woodlands along the Gulf Coast to help landbirds successfully negotiate both barriers.more » « less
