Abstrakt Jämlikhet, mångfald och inkludering (EDI efter engelska Equity, diversity and inclusivity) är värden som alla forskargrupper och organisationer ska sträva efter. Dessa värden säkrar arbetsvillkor, policies och praktik som inte bara främjar forskningsresultat av hög kvalité men även det vulkanologiska samhällets välbefinnande. I denna artikel reflekterar vi över EDI framsteg inom vulkanologin genom att utvärdera internationella organisationers medlemsdata, sammansättningen av nämnder, fördelning av priser och förstaförfattarskap av artiklar i vulkanologiska tidskrifter. På grund av den otillräckliga tillgången på data fokuserar vi vår analys utifrån diskriminering som kan kopplas till könsidentitet, men visar även att diskriminering på grund av etnicitet, sexuell läggning, religion, fysisk förmåga och socioekonomisk bakgrund förekommer och att om flera av dessa faktorer korsas leder det till ännu värre marginalisering inom det vulkanologiska samhället. Vi delar förslag och råd från andra discipliner om hur individer, forskargrupper och organisationer kan främja, utveckla och implementera nya initiativ som identifierar och tar itu med diskriminering och förbättrar EDI inom vulkanologin. Det finns mycket förbättringspotential om vi alla ser vår roll i att skapa ett jämlikare, och inkluderande vulkanologiskt samhälle med mer mångfald. Att uppnå detta kräver: 1) Medvetenhet: erkännandet av problemet, 2) Engagemang: genom att anta EDI i värdegrunden och utveckla handlingsplaner, uppförandekoder och riktlinjer, 3) Handling med målet att uppnå alla gruppers representation och 4) Reflektion: utveckling genom kritisk självreflektion och viljan att ta itu med brister.

The Non-Clinical Tomography Users Research Network (NoCTURN) was established in 2022 to advance Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse (FAIR) and Open Science (OS) practices in the computed tomographic (CT) imaging community. CT specialists utilize a shared pipeline to create digital representations of real-world objects for research, education, and outreach, and we face a shared set of challenges and limitations imposed by siloing of current workflows, best practices, and expertise. Mirroring the U.S. National Science Foundation’s “10 Big Ideas” of Convergence Research (2016), and in consideration of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy's Nelson Memorandum (2020), NoCTURN is leveraging input from a broad community of more than 100 CT educators, researchers, curators, and industry stakeholders to propose improvements to data handling, management, and sharing that cut across scientific disciplines and extend beyond. Our primary goal is to develop practical recommendations and tools that link today's CT data to tomorrow's CT discoveries. NoCTURN is working toward this goal by providing a platform to: 1) engage the international scientific CT community via participant recruitment from imaging facilities, academic departments and museums, and data repositories across the globe; 2) stimulate improvements for CT imaging and data management standards that focus on FAIR and OS principles; and 3) work directly with private companies that manufacture the hardware and software used in CT imaging, visualization, and analysis to find common ground in documentation and interoperability that better reflects the OS standards championed by federal funding agencies. The planned deliverables from this three-year grant include a ‘Rosetta Stone’ for CT terminology, an interactive world map of CT facilities, a guide to CT repositories, and ‘Good, Better, Best’ guidelines for metadata and long-term data management. We aim to reduce the barriers to entry that isolate individuals and research labs, and we anticipate that developing community standards and improving methodological reporting will enable long-term, systemic changes necessary to aid those at all levels of experience in furthering their access to and use of CT imaging.more » « less

Responsible AI (RAI) is the science and practice of ensuring the design, development, use, and oversight of AI are socially sustainable---benefiting diverse stakeholders while controlling the risks. Achieving this goal requires active engagement and participation from the broader public. This paper introduces We are AI: Taking Control of Technology, a public education course that brings the topics of AI and RAI to the general audience in a peer-learning setting. We outline the goals behind the course's development, discuss the multi-year iterative process that shaped its creation, and summarize its content. We also discuss two offerings of We are AI to an active and engaged group of librarians and professional staff at New York University, highlighting successes and areas for improvement. The course materials, including a multilingual comic book series by the same name, are publicly available and can be used independently. By sharing our experience in creating and teaching We are AI, we aim to introduce these resources to the community of AI educators, researchers, and practitioners, supporting their public education efforts.more » « less
