Abstract This article describes a novel method for quantifying fixation disparity and evaluates its role in visuospatial cognition during an authentic learning task, specifically, the determination of molecule chirality in organic chemistry involving mental rotation and pattern comparison. The first study examined the influence of molecular model dimensionality (2D vs. 3D) on chirality determination performance and visual attention of 55 participants. The second study explored how the sustained playing of the tile‐matching game Mahjong, a pattern comparison game, can affect visual attention and visuospatial performance during the chirality determination task of 59 participants. Fixation disparity was one of the eye tracking variables explored. Both studies revealed that (1) individuals with higher fixation disparity underperformed on the chirality task, which involves mental rotation and pattern comparison, and (2) fixation disparity improved over time in participants who played Mahjong. This work provides important implications for using fixation disparity as a possible biomarker of visuospatial performance.

Tile Pattern-Building Games on a Grid are PSPACE-complete
In this paper, we investigate a certain class of tile-based pattern games through a simplified version of a recent game titled Nonads. We prove that Nonads is PSPACE-complete with a reduction from bounded 2-player constraint logic (Bounded 2CL) even when both players share the same target and there is only one type of playable tile. This has application to any grid-based pattern building game.

null (Ed.)This paper introduces a fully automatic method of mechanic illumination for general video game level generation. Using the Constrained MAP-Elites algorithm and the GVG-AI framework, this system generates the simplest tile based levels that contain specific sets of game mechanics and also satisfy playability constraints. We apply this method to illuminate the mechanic space for four different games in GVG-AI: Zelda, Solarfox, Plants, and RealPortals. With this system, we can generate playable levels that contain different combinations of most of the possible mechanics. These levels can later be used to populate game tutorials that teach players how to use the mechanics of the game.more » « less

Hierarchical Shape Construction and Complexity for Slidable Polyominos under Uniform External ForcesAdvances in technology have given us the ability to create and manipulate robots for numerous applications at the molecular scale. At this size, fabrication tool limitations motivate the use of simple robots. The individual control of these simple objects can be infeasible. We investigate a model of robot motion planning, based on global external signals, known as the tilt model. Given a board and initial placement of polyominoes, the board may be tilted in any of the 4 cardinal directions, causing all slidable polyominoes to move maximally in the specified direction until blocked. We propose a new hierarchy of shapes and design a single configuration that is strongly universal for any w×h bounded shape within this hierarchy (it can be reconfigured to construct any w×h bounded shape in the hierarchy). This class of shapes constitutes the most general set of buildable shapes in the literature, with most previous work consisting of just the first-level of our hierarchy. We accompany this result with a O(n4logn)-time algorithm for deciding if a given hole-free shape is a member of the hierarchy. For our second result, we resolve a long-standing open problem within the field: We show that deciding if a given position may be covered by a tile for a given initial board configuration is PSPACE-complete, even when all movable pieces are 1×1 tiles with no glues. We achieve this result by a reduction from Non-deterministic Constraint Logic for a one-player unbounded game.more » « less

In the 15-puzzle game, 15 labeled square tiles are reconfigured on a 4 × 4 board through an escort, wherein each (time) step, a single tile neighboring it may slide into it, leaving the space previously occupied by the tile as the new escort. We study a generalized sliding-tile puzzle (GSTP) in which (1) there are 1+ escorts and (2) multiple tiles can move synchronously in a single time step. Compared with popular discrete multi-agent/robot motion models, GSTP provides a more accurate model for a broad array of high-utility applications, including warehouse automation and autonomous garage parking, but is less studied due to the more involved tile interactions. In this work, we analyze optimal GSTP solution structures, establishing that computing makespan optimal solutions for GSTP is NP-complete and developing polynomial time algorithms yielding makespans approximating the minimum with expected/high probability constant factors, assuming randomized start and goal configurations.more » « less

null (Ed.)This paper introduces RL Brush, a level-editing tool for tile-based games designed for mixed-initiative co-creation. The tool uses reinforcement-learning-based models to augment manual human level-design through the addition of AI-generated suggestions. Here, we apply RL Brush to designing levels for the classic puzzle game Sokoban. We put the tool online and tested it in 39 different sessions. The results show that users using the AI suggestions stay around longer and their created levels on average are more playable and more complex than without.more » « less
