Living in a rapidly changing environment can alter stress physiology at the population level, with negative impacts on health, reproductive rates, and mortality that may ultimately result in species decline. Small, isolated animal populations where genetic diversity is low are at particular risks, such as endangered Virunga mountain gorillas (
Theories such as social baseline theory have argued that social groups serve a regulatory function but have not explored whether this regulatory process carries costs for the group. Allostatic load, the wear and tear on regulatory systems caused by chronic or frequent stress, is marked by diminished stress system flexibility and compromised recovery. We argue that allostatic load may develop within social groups as well and provide a model for how relationship dysfunction operates. Social allostatic load may be characterized by processes such as groups becoming locked into static patterns of interaction and may ultimately lead to up-regulation or down-regulation of a group’s set point, or the optimal range of arousal or affect around which the group tends to converge. Many studies of emotional and physiological linkage within groups have reported that highly correlated states of arousal, which may reflect failure to maintain a group-level regulatory baseline, occur in the context of stress, conflict, and relationship distress. Relationship strain may also place greater demands on neurocognitive regulatory processes. Just as allostatic load may be detrimental to individual health, social allostatic load may corrode relationship quality.

Abstract Gorilla beringei beringei ). Along with climate change‐associated environmental shifts that are affecting the entire population, subpopulations of the Virunga gorillas have recently experienced extreme changes in their social environment. As the growing population moves closer to the forest's carrying capacity, the gorillas are coping with rising population density, increased frequencies of interactions between social units, and changing habitat use (e.g., more overlapping home ranges and routine ranging at higher elevations). Using noninvasive monitoring of fecal glucocorticoid metabolites (FGM) on 115 habituated Virunga gorillas, we investigated how social and ecological variation are related to baseline FGM levels, to better understand the adaptive capacity of mountain gorillas and monitor potential physiological indicators of population decline risks. Generalized linear mixed models revealed elevated mean monthly baseline FGM levels in months with higher rainfall and higher mean maximum and minimum temperature, suggesting that Virunga gorillas might be sensitive to predicted warming and rainfall trendsmore » -
Objective We live in an increasingly multicultural society which is reflected in the student population. In the community college (CC) setting, students from underrepresented groups are over-represented in remedial math courses and are less likely to complete the sequence. The extant literature suggests higher levels of acculturation, both cultural adoption and cultural maintenance, support academic success. Working memory (WM) is a well-known domain-general predictor of mathematical development and has been shown to relate to math achievement r = .38. Given this moderate relation, additional predictors of math achievement warrant investigation. In the present study, we investigated the potential moderational role of acculturation (cultural adoption and maintenance), on the WM-math relation in a diverse group of CC students (n = 94). Math was assessed both by a standardized measure of math computation and a measure of “everyday math” word problems including medical and financial management. We expected that higher levels of acculturation (adoption and maintenance) would decreasing WM load (via cognitive load) and aid math performance. At higher levels of acculturation, the WM-math relation was hypothesized approximate meta analytic findings, r = .38. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), an index of the parasympathetic nervous system, has recently gained attention as a physiological component of regulatory processes, social connectedness, and health. Within the context of romantic relationships, studies have operationalized and conceptualized RSA in disparate ways, obscuring a clear pattern of findings. This systematic review synthesizes the rapidly developing literature and clarifies the role of RSA in romantic relationships. We evaluate support for three conceptual hypotheses: (1) resting baseline RSA is associated with better quality relationships; (2) phasic RSA is reflective of changes in threat and connection during couple interactions; and (3) physiological linkage in RSA between romantic partners relates to positive or negative relationship functioning depending on the nature of the linkage (e.g., in‐phase vs. antiphase). We identified 26 empirical studies that tested associations between RSA and an index of romantic relationships (i.e., relationship satisfaction). Our findings show that higher RSA is not uniformly “good” for relationships. Higher resting baseline RSA was contemporaneously associated with better quality relationships, yet higher baseline RSA was also unexpectedly associated with relationship violence. Short‐term decreases in RSA were found during relationship conflict, though the opposite—phasic increases in RSA during positive romantic partner interactions—was not found due to mixedmore »

Abstract Reptiles rely on thermal heat exchange to achieve body temperatures (
T body) conducive to maintaining homeostasis. Diurnal changes in the thermal environment are therefore liable to influence allostatic mediation of survival processes (e.g., immunity) during environmental challenges or stressors. However, the extent to whichT bodyprompts individual variation in physiology remains largely unexplored in reptiles. Our study tested how circulating energy‐mobilizing hormone, energy metabolites, and immunity can vary across basal and stress‐induced allostatic states for plateau side‐blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana uniformis ) residing in a heterogeneous thermal environment. We collected baseline and acute stress blood samples from male lizards to compare changes in plasma corticosterone (CORT), glucose, and bacterial killing ability (BKA) in relation to each other andT body. We hypothesized each physiological parameter differs between allostatic states, whereby stress‐induced activity increases from baseline. At basal and stress‐induced states, we also hypothesized circulating CORT, glucose, and BKA directly correspond with each other andT body. We found both CORT and BKA increased while glucose instead decreased from acute stress. At basal and stress‐induced allostatic states, we found CORT to be directly related toT bodywhile BKA was inversely related to CORT. We also found BKA and glucose were directly related at baseline, but inversely related following acute stress.more » -
CONTEXT With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the resulting response from universities, engineering students find themselves in an unprecedented situation. In addition to stressors related to the curriculum, residential students across the United States are being asked to relocate away from campus and engage in distance learning. At the same time, social distancing requirements are limiting students’ ability to socialize, procure food and supplies, exercise, and remain employed and financially solvent. Some students will fall ill while others face the prospect of sick family members, and even deaths in the family. Prior research suggests that individuals living through this pandemic are likely to face stress, uncertainty, and fear that affects their mental health and academic performance for years to come.
