Title: Synergistic N‐Heterocyclic Carbene/Palladium‐Catalyzed Umpolung 1,4‐Addition of Aryl Iodides to Enals
Abstract

An umpolung 1,4‐addition of aryl iodides to enals promoted by cooperative (terpy)Pd/NHC catalysis was developed that generates various bioactive β,β‐diaryl propanoate derivatives. This system is not only the first reported palladium‐catalyzed arylation of NHC‐bound homoenolates but also expands the scope of NHC‐induced umpolung transformations. A diverse array of functional groups such as esters, nitriles, alcohols, and heterocycles are tolerated under the mild conditions. This method also circumvents the use of moisture‐sensitive organometallic reagents.

  2. N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are versatile species that figure prominently as catalysts. Despite their widespread use in organocatalysis, studies of the relationship between the basicity of NHCs and their catalytic ability are limited. Herein we review work on both the examination of NHC basicity as well as its impact on organocatalysis. The review is divided into three main parts: an overview of NHC basicity studies, both in solution and in the gas phase; the role of basicity in Umpolung -type catalysis; and the relationship between NHC basicity and its growing role as a Brønsted base catalyst. This review is not an exhaustive catalog of all NHC catalysis, but rather focuses on work that specifically examines and discusses the effect of NHC basicity on catalyst function.

  3. Abstract

Substituted propargyl acetates are converted into 4‐boryl‐2(5H)‐furanones upon thermolysis in the presence of an N‐heterocyclic carbene borane (NHC‐borane) and di‐tert‐butyl peroxide. The acetyl methyl group is lost during the reaction as methane. Evidence suggests that the reaction proceeds by a sequence of radical events including: 1) addition of an NHC‐boryl radical to the triple bond; 2) cyclization of the resultant β‐borylalkenyl radical to the ester carbonyl group; 3) β‐scission of the so‐formed alkoxy radical to provide the 4‐boryl‐2(5H)‐furanone and a methyl radical; and 4) hydrogen abstraction from the NHC‐borane to return the initial NHC‐boryl radical and methane.

  5. Abstract

The high abundance, low toxicity and rich redox chemistry of iron has resulted in a surge of iron‐catalyzed organic transformations over the last two decades. Within this area, N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been widely utilized to achieve high yields across reactions including cross‐coupling and C−H alkylation, amongst others. Central to the development of iron‐NHC catalytic methods is the understanding of iron speciation and the propensity of these species to undergo reduction events, as low‐valent iron species can be advantageous or undesirable from one system to the next. This study highlights the importance of the identity of the NHC on iron speciation upon reaction with EtMgBr, where reactions with SIMes and IMes NHCs were shown to undergo β‐hydride elimination more readily than those with SIPr and IPr NHCs. This insight is vital to developing new iron‐NHC catalyzed transformations as understanding how to control this reduction by simply changing the NHC is central to improving the reactivity in iron‐NHC catalysis.
