Title: Autofocusing method for high-resolution three-dimensional profilometry
State-of-the-art high-accuracy three-dimensional (3D) profilometry systems typically use a lens with a fixed focal length, making it difficult for them to measure scenes with large depth variations, especially dynamically changing ones. To address this need, this Letter proposes a novel, to the best of our knowledge, autofocusing method for high-resolution 3D profilometry with a digital fringe projection technique by (1) developing a novel continuous geometric parameter model for systems using electrically tunable lenses and (2) employing a focal plane detection algorithm. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by experiments.  more » « less

  1. This paper presents a novel technique to achieve autofocusing for a three-dimensional (3D) profilometry system with dual projectors. The proposed system uses a camera that is attached with an electronically focus-tunable lens (ETL) that allows dynamic change of camera’s focal plane such that the camera can focus on the object; the camera captures fringe patterns projected by each projector to establish corresponding points between two projectors, and two pre-calibrated projectors form triangulation for 3D reconstruction. We pre-calibrate the relationship between the depth and the current being used for each focal plane, perform a 3D shape measurement with an unknown focus level, and calculate the desired current value based on the initial 3D result. We developed a prototype system that can automatically focus on an object positioned between 450 mm to 850 mm.

  2. This study compares the accuracy of circular and linear fringe projection profilometry in the aspects of system calibration and 3D reconstruction. We introduce, what we believe to be, a novel calibration method and 3D reconstruction technique using circular and radial fringe patterns. Our approach is compared with the traditional linear phase-shifting method through several 2 × 2 experimental setups. Results indicate that our 3D reconstruction method surpasses the linear phase-shifting approach in performance, although calibration efficiency does not present a superior performance. Further analysis reveals that sensitivity and estimated phase error contribute to the relative underperformance in calibration. This paper offers insights into the potentials and limitations of circular fringe projection profilometry.

  3. This Letter presents a novel, to the best of our knowledge, method to calibrate multi-focus microscopic structured-light three-dimensional (3D) imaging systems with an electrically adjustable camera focal length. We first leverage the conventional method to calibrate the system with a reference focal lengthf0. Then we calibrate the system with other discrete focal lengthsfiby determining virtual features on a reconstructed white plane usingf0. Finally, we fit the polynomial function model using the discrete calibration results forfi. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method can calibrate the system consistently and accurately.

  4. We propose polarimetric three-dimensional (3D) integral imaging profilometry and investigate its performance under degraded environmental conditions in terms of the accuracy of object depth acquisition. Integral imaging based profilometry provides depth information by capturing and utilizing multiple perspectives of the observed object. However, the performance of depth map generation may degrade due to light condition, partial occlusions, and object surface material. To improve the accuracy of depth estimation in these conditions, we propose to use polarimetric profilometry. Our experiments indicate that the proposed approach may result in more accurate depth estimation under degraded environmental conditions. We measure a number of metrics to evaluate the performance of the proposed polarimetric profilometry methods for generating the depth map under degraded conditions. Experimental results are presented to evaluate the robustness of the proposed method under degraded environment conditions and compare its performance with conventional integral imaging. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on polarimetric 3D integral imaging profilometry, and its performance under degraded environments.

  5. Three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement based on the fringe projection technique has been extensively used for scientific discoveries and industrial practices. Yet, one of the most challenging issues is its limited depth of field (DOF). This paper presents a method to drastically increase DOF of 3D shape measurement technique by employing the focal sweep method. The proposed method employs an electrically tunable lens (ETL) to rapidly sweep the focal plane during image integration and the post deconvolution algorithm to reconstruct focused images for 3D reconstruction. Experimental results demonstrated that our proposed method can achieve high-resolution and high-accuracy 3D shape measurement with greatly improved DOF in real time.
