Title: Studies on Positioning Manipulators Actuated by Solid Media Transmissions
Fluidic transmission mechanisms use fluids to transmit force through conduits. We previously presented a transmission mechanism called solid-media transmission (SMT), which uses conduits filled with spheres and spacers for push-only bidirectional transmission. In this paper, we present new designs of SMT-actuated one-degree-of-freedom (DoF) and two-degree-of-freedom positioning manipulators, and report experiment studies to assess their performance. In these studies, closed-loop position control was performed with a PI controller and/or master-slave control. With braided PTFE tubing, SMT exhibited sub-millimeter accuracy, with a tolerance of 0:05mm for the tested transmission lines with lengths up to 4m.  more » « less

    We demonstrate proprioceptive feedback control of a one degree of freedom soft, pneumatically actuated origami robot and an assembly of two robots into a two degree of freedom system. The base unit of the robot is a 41 mm long, 3-D printed Kresling-inspired structure with six sets of sidewall folds and one degree of freedom. Pneumatic actuation, provided by negative fluidic pressure, causes the robot to contract. Capacitive sensors patterned onto the robot provide position estimation and serve as input to a feedback controller. Using a finite element approach, the electrode shapes are optimized for sensitivity at larger (more obtuse) fold angles to improve control across the actuation range. We demonstrate stable position control through discrete-time proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control on a single unit Kresling robot via a series of static set points to 17 mm, dynamic set point stepping, and sinusoidal signal following, with error under 3 mm up to 10 mm contraction. We also demonstrate a two-unit Kresling robot with two degree of freedom extension and rotation control, which has error of 1.7 mm and 6.1°. This work contributes optimized capacitive electrode design and the demonstration of closed-loop feedback position control without visual tracking as an input. This approach to capacitance sensing and modeling constitutes a major step towards proprioceptive state estimation and feedback control in soft origami robotics.

We investigate teachers’ initial in-the-moment responses to instances of high-potential student mathematical thinking (SMT) during whole-class discussion to understand what it means to productively incorporate SMT into instruction. Teachers’ initial responses were coded using the Teacher Response Coding scheme, which disentangles the teacher action, who the response is directed to, and the degree to which the SMT is honored. We found that teachers incorporated students’ actions and ideas in their response, but tended to address the SMT themselves and did not fully take advantage of the SMT. We consider the productivity of teachers’ initial responses in relation to principles of productive use of SMT and compare the results to those of a previous study of teachers’ hypothetical initial responses to SMT in an interview setting.

  5. In the recent past the design of many aquatic robots has been inspired by the motion of fish. Actuated internal rotors or moving masses have been frequently used either for propulsion and or the control of such robots. However the effect of internal passive degrees of freedom or passive appendages on the motion of such robots is poorly understood. In this paper we present a minimal model that demonstrates the influence of passive degrees of freedom on an aquatic robot. The model is of a circular cylinder with a passive internal rotor, immersed in an inviscid fluid interacting with point vortices. We show through numerics that the motion of the cylinder containing a passive degree of freedom is significantly different than one without. These results show that the mechanical feedback via passive degrees of freedom could be a useful way to control the motion of aquatic robots.
