Title: Huisgen's 1,3‐Dipolar Cycloadditions to Fulvenes Proceed via Ambimodal [6+4]/[4+2] Transition States
Abstract Huisgen's 1960 announcement of the concept of 1,3‐dipolar cycloadditions was published the year before Alder's study of the reaction of diazomethane and dimethylfulvene. The diazomethane reaction was studied again in 1970 by Houk et al. and shown to give a [6+4] adduct. Padwa's nitrile ylide cycloaddition to dimethylfulvene (1978) gave [6+4] and [4+2] adducts. We performed computational studies of these reactions with density functional theory (DFT) and show that they involve ambimodal [6+4]/[4+2] transition states that can lead to either type of cycloadduct from one transition state. We dedicate this paper to the extraordinary life and humanity of Rolf Huisgen, and to the undying influence of his discoveries on chemistry.  more » « less

  1. Abstract During the search for transition metal‐free alkyne hydrogenation catalysts, two new ternary Ca−Ga−Ge phases, Ca2Ga4Ge6(Cmc21, a=4.1600(10) Å, b=23.283(5) Å, c=10.789(3) Å) and Ca3Ga4Ge6(C2/m, a=24.063(2) Å, b=4.1987(4) Å, c=10.9794(9) Å, β=91.409(4)°), were discovered. These compounds are isostructural to the previously established Yb2Ga4Ge6and Yb3Ga4Ge6analogues, and according to Zintl‐Klemm counting rules, consist of anionic [Ga4Ge6]4−and [Ga4Ge6]6−frameworks in which every Ga and Ge atom would have a formal octet with no Ga−Ga or Ga−Ge π‐bonding. These compounds are metallic, based on temperature dependent electrical resistivity and thermopower measurements for Ca3Ga4Ge6, along with density functional theory calculations for both phases. Unlike the highly active 13‐layer trigonal CaGaGe phase, these new compounds exhibit minimal activity in the semi/full alkyne hydrogenation of phenylacetylene, which is consistent with previous observations that the lack of a formal octet for framework atoms is essential for catalysis in these Zintl‐Klemm compounds.

  2. Abstract Although most class (b) transition metals have been studied in regard to CH4activation, divalent silver (AgII), possibly owing to its reactive nature, is the only class (b) high‐valent transition metal center that is not yet reported to exhibit reactivities towards CH4activation. We now report that electrochemically generated AgIImetalloradical readily functionalizes CH4into methyl bisulfate (CH3OSO3H) at ambient conditions in 98 % H2SO4. Mechanistic investigation experimentally unveils a low activation energy of 13.1 kcal mol−1, a high pseudo‐first‐order rate constant of CH4activation up to 2.8×103 h−1at room temperature and a CH4pressure of 85 psi, and two competing reaction pathways preferable towards CH4activation over solvent oxidation. Reaction kinetic data suggest a Faradaic efficiency exceeding 99 % beyond 180 psi CH4at room temperature for potential chemical production from widely distributed natural gas resources with minimal infrastructure reliance.

  3. Abstract A method for the stereoselective [4+2]‐cycloaddition of alkenylboranes and dienes is presented. This transformation was accomplished through the introduction of a new strategy that involves the use of chiral N‐protonated alkenyl oxazaborolidines as dieneophiles. The reaction leads to the formation of products that can be readily derivatized to more complex structural motifs through stereospecific transformations of the C−B bond such as oxidation and homologation. Detailed computation evaluation of the reaction has uncovered a surprising role of the counterion on stereoselectivity.

  4. Abstract The complex structure of the catalytic active phase, and surface‐gas reaction networks have hindered understanding of the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) reaction mechanism by supported Na2WO4/SiO2catalysts. The present study demonstrates, with the aid of in situ Raman spectroscopy and chemical probe (H2‐TPR, TAP and steady‐state kinetics) experiments, that the long speculated crystalline Na2WO4active phase is unstable and melts under OCM reaction conditions, partially transforming to thermally stable surface Na‐WOxsites. Kinetic analysis via temporal analysis of products (TAP) and steady‐state OCM reaction studies demonstrate that (i) surface Na‐WOxsites are responsible for selectively activating CH4to C2Hxand over‐oxidizing CHyto CO and (ii) molten Na2WO4phase is mainly responsible for over‐oxidation of CH4to CO2and also assists in oxidative dehydrogenation of C2H6to C2H4. These new insights reveal the nature of catalytic active sites and resolve the OCM reaction mechanism over supported Na2WO4/SiO2catalysts.

The title compound, C 15 H 17 NO 2 S, was synthesized via a substitution reaction between 4-methylbenzylamine and p -toluenesulfonyl chloride. In the crystal, N—H...O hydrogen bonds link the molecules, forming ribbons running along the b -axis direction. One of the aromatic rings hosts two intermolecular C—H...π interactions that link these hydrogen-bonded ribbons into a three-dimensional network.
