RESUMEN. - We describe a new species of chewing louse, Motmotnirmus danielalfonsoi n. sp., from the Turquoise-Browed Motmot (Eumomota superciliosa). It differs from congeneric species in several characters, including the head shape, the abdominal chaetotaxy of the male, and in the characters of the male genitalia. Females differ from congeneric species primarily in the head shape and the shape and size of abdominal plates. Additionally, we suggest that the true host of Motmotnirmus guatemalensis is the Lesson’s Momot (Momotus lessonii), which is also a new host record. Such suggestion is based on examinations of museum specimens of lice from various motmot species. We also provide a key to the species of Motmotnirmus and an updated checklist of the genus Motmotnirmus.

Gymnosiphon syceorosensis (Burmanniaceae), the second new species for the Philippines
A new holomycoheterotrophic member of Burmanniaceae, Gymnosiphon syceorosensis , is described from Mt. Hamiguitan located on the island of Mindanao, Philippines. This species differs from the recently named G. philippinensis from Cebu in a number of quantitative and qualitative characters. Phenetic (neighbor-joining) and phylogenetic (maximum parsimony) analyses of characters from Asian and Australian Gymnosiphon species were conducted and diagnostic taxonomic features were discussed. This new species appears to be most closely related to G. affinis J.J. Sm. from New Guinea but differs in a number of floral features including inner perianth lobe shape, stamen position in floral tube, and anther connective shape.

Abstract Three new cestode species are described from the crocodile shark ( Pseudocarcharias kamoharai ) in Ecuador. All three were examined with light and scanning electron microscopy. The unique combination of morphological features in one of the new species prompted formal investigation of the non-monophyly of Paraorygmatobothrium relative to the morphologically similar genera Doliobothrium , Guidus , Marsupiobothrium , Nandocestus , Orectolobicestus , Ruhnkecestus and Scyphophyllidium . Sequence data generated for part of the 28S rDNA gene were subjected to maximum likelihood (ML) analysis. The resulting tree led to the synonymization of six of these seven genera with Scyphophyllidium , and transfer of their species to the latter genus. With the new species, the number of described members of Scyphophyllidium is now 45. The diagnosis of Scyphophyllidium is revised to accommodate these species. In addition, to expedite future descriptions, eight categories of Scyphophyllidium species are circumscribed, based largely on bothridial features. Scyphophyllidium timvickiorum n. sp. is a category 1 species. Beyond being the smallest category 1 species, it bears, rather than lacks, apical suckers and lacks, rather than bears, strobilar scutes. The two other new species are members of Clistobothrium . Clistobothrium amyae n. sp. differs from its congeners in bothridial shape, elongate cephalic peduncle and tiny size. Clistobothrium gabywalterorum n. sp. differs from the two of its congeners that also possess foliose bothridia in overall size and testis number. Despite their substantial morphological differences, the ML tree indicates they are sister taxa. Both are unique among their congeners in possessing cephalic peduncle spinitriches. The diagnosis of Clistobothrium is revised accordingly.more » « less

null (Ed.)Vaccinium hamiguitanense, a new species from the Philippines, is described and illustrated. The new species is most similar to V. gitingense Hook. f. but differs by having smaller leaf blades, leaf blade margins with 2 to 4 impressed more or less evenly distributed crenations (glands) per side, inflorescences with fewer flowers, shorter pedicels that are puberulent and muriculate, and a glabrous floral disk. The new species is endemic to Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao Oriental Province of Mindanao Island in Tropical Upper Montane Rain Forest and low (“bonsai”) forest on clay derived from ultramafic rock. We assign an IUCN Red List preliminary status as Data Deficient.more » « less

Genus Pompholyx Gosse, 1851 (Rotifera; Monogononta; Testudinellidae) comprises three species described from freshwater plankton around the globe. Here we describe a new species of Pompholyx collected from a freshwater pond in Massachusetts, USA. The new species resembles its congeners with respect to the following characters: paired eyespots; a dorsally arched lorica with a dorsal occipital convexity behind the corona; lateral flared and rounded lorica surfaces; a ventral surface bearing an occipital concavity posterior of the mouth; a unique egg-gland system; and the absence of a foot. However, P. faciemlarva sp. n. differs from its congeners in possessing a transverse furrow on both the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the lorica. While the trophi of P. faciemlarva sp. n. generally resemble those of other species of Testudinellidae, they do have a symmetrical pattern of unci teeth (17/17) that differs from Pompholyx sulcata (17–20/18–21, right/left), the only other species in the genus with well-described trophi. The description of this new species enhances the floristic richness of freshwater in North America.more » « less

Abstract Pollen, the microgametophyte of seed plants, has an important role in plant reproduction and, therefore, evolution. Pollen is variable in, for example, size, shape, aperture number; these features are particularly diverse in some plant taxa and can be diagnostic. In one family, Boraginaceae, the range of pollen diversity suggests the potential utility of this family as a model for integrative studies of pollen development, evolution and molecular biology. In the present study, a comprehensive survey of the diversity and evolution of pollen from 538 species belonging to 72 genera was made using data from the literature and additional scanning electron microscopy examination. Shifts in diversification rates and the evolution of various quantitative characters were detected, and the results revealed remarkable differences in size, shape and number of apertures. The pollen of one subfamily, Boraginoideae, is larger than that in Cynoglossoideae. The diversity of pollen shapes and aperture numbers in one tribe, Lithospermeae, is greater than that in the other tribes. Ancestral pollen for the family was resolved as small, prolate grains that bear three apertures and are iso‐aperturate. Of all the tribes, the greatest number of changes in pollen size and aperture number were observed in Lithospermeae and Boragineae, and the number of apertures was found to be stable throughout all tribes of Cynoglossoideae. In addition, the present study showed that diversification of Boraginaceae cannot be assigned to a single factor, such as pollen size, and the increased rate of diversification for species‐rich groups (e.g.Cynoglossum) is not correlated with pollen size or shape evolution. The palynological data and patterns of character evolution presented in the study provide better resolution of the roles of geographical and ecological factors in the diversity and evolution of pollen grains of Boraginaceae, and provide suggestions for future palynological research across the family.more » « less
