Title: Probing the electrical double layer by operando X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy through a graphene‐carbon nanotube composite window
Abstract

The electrical double layer is known to spontaneously form at the electrode‐electrolyte interface, impacting many important chemical and physical processes as well as applications including electrocatalysis, electroorganic synthesis, nanomaterial preparation, energy storage, and even emulsion stabilization. However, it has been challenging to study this fundamental phenomenon at the molecular level because the electrical double layer is deeply “buried” by the bulk electrolyte solution. Here, we report a quantitative probing of the electrical double layer of ionic liquids from the solid side of a photoelectron‐transparent graphene‐carbon nanotube hybrid membrane electrode using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The membrane window is ultrathin (1‐1.5 nm), large (~1 cm2), and robust, enabling a tight seal of the electrolyte and quantitative measurement with excellent photoelectron signals. Byoperandomonitoring the population changes of cations and anions in response to the applied electrical potentials, we experimentally resolve the chemical structure and dynamics of the electrical double layer, which corroborate results from molecular dynamics simulations.

  1. Abstract

Developing promising solid‐state Li batteries with capabilities of high current densities have been a major challenge partly due to large interfacial resistance across the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. This work represents an integrated network of self‐standing polymer electrolyte and active electrode materials with in situ UV cross‐linking. This method provides a uniform morphology of composite polymer electrolyte with low thickness of 20–40 μm. This modification leads to promising cycling results with 85% specific capacity retention in Li||LiFePO4cell over 100 cycles at high current densities of 170 mA g−1(~25 μA cm−2, 1 C).By applying this method, the interfacial resistance decreases as high as seven folds compared to noncross‐linked interfaces. The following work introduce a facile and cost‐effective method in developing fast‐charging self‐standing polymer batteries with enhanced electrochemical properties.

  2. Abstract

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe muscle wasting disorder caused by dystrophin mutations, leading to the loss of sarcolemmal integrity, and resulting in progressive myofibre necrosis and impaired muscle function. Our previous studies suggest that lipin1 is important for skeletal muscle regeneration and myofibre integrity. Additionally, we discovered that mRNA expression levels of lipin1 were significantly reduced in skeletal muscle of DMD patients and the mdx mouse model. To understand the role of lipin1 in dystrophic muscle, we generated dystrophin/lipin1 double knockout (DKO) mice, and compared the limb muscle pathology and function of wild‐type B10, muscle‐specific lipin1 deficient (lipin1Myf5cKO), mdx and DKO mice. We found that further knockout of lipin1 in dystrophic muscle exhibited a more severe phenotype characterized by increased necroptosis, fibrosis and exacerbated membrane damage in DKO compared to mdx mice. In barium chloride‐induced muscle injury, both lipin1Myf5cKOand DKO showed prolonged regeneration at day 14 post‐injection, suggesting that lipin1 is critical for muscle regeneration. In situcontractile function assays showed that lipin1 deficiency in dystrophic muscle led to reduced specific force production. Using a cell culture system, we found that lipin1 deficiency led to elevated expression levels of necroptotic markers and medium creatine kinase, which could be a result of sarcolemmal damage. Most importantly, restoration of lipin1 inhibited the elevation of necroptotic markers in differentiated primary lipin1‐deficient myoblasts. Overall, our data suggests that lipin1 plays complementary roles in myofibre stability and muscle function in dystrophic muscles, and overexpression of lipin1 may serve as a potential therapeutic strategy for dystrophic muscles.image

    Key points

We identified that lipin1 mRNA expression levels are significantly reduced in skeletal muscles of Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients and mdx mice.

We found that further depletion of lipin1 in skeletal muscles of mdx mice induces more severe dystrophic phenotypes, including enhanced myofibre sarcolemma damage, muscle necroptosis, inflammation, fibrosis and reduced specific force production.

Lipin1 deficiency leads to elevated expression levels of necroptotic markers, whereas restoration of lipin1 inhibits their expression.

Our results suggest that lipin1 is functionally complementary to dystrophin in muscle membrane integrity and muscle regeneration.

  3. Abstract

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are considered the most promising energy storage devices for applications such as electrical vehicles owing to its tremendous theoretical capacity (3860 mAh g−1). However, the serious safety issues and poor cycling performance caused by the dendritic crystal growth during deposition are concerned for any rechargeable batteries with a lithium metal anode. To make widespread adoption a possibility, considerable efforts have been devoted to suppressing lithium (Li) dendrite growth. In this review, the recent strategies to developing dendrite free Li anode, including constructing an artificial solid electrolyte interface, current collector modification, separator film improvement, and electrolyte additive, are summarized. The merits and shortcomings for different strategies are reviewed and a general summary and perspective on the next generation rechargeable batteries are presented.

The selenenate anion (RSeO) is introduced as an active organocatalyst for the dehydrohalogen coupling of benzyl halides to formtrans‐stilbenes. It is shown that RSeOis a more reactive catalyst than the previously reported sulfur analogues (sulfenate anion, RSO) and selenolate anions (RSe) in the aforementioned reaction. This catalytic system was also applied to the benzylic‐chloromethyl‐coupling polymerization (BCCP) of a bis‐chloromethyl arene to form ppv (poly(p‐phenylene vinylene))‐type polymers with high yields, Mn(average molecular weight) up to 13,000 and Đ (dispersity) of 1.15.

  5. Abstract

Precise diagnosis and immunity to viruses, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS‐CoV) is achieved by the detection of the viral antigens and/or corresponding antibodies, respectively. However, a widely used antigen detection methods, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), are complex, expensive, and time‐consuming Furthermore, the antibody test that detects an asymptomatic infection and immunity is usually performed separately and exhibits relatively low accuracy. To achieve a simplified, rapid, and accurate diagnosis, we have demonstrated an indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO)‐based biosensor field‐effect transistor (bio‐FET) that can simultaneously detect spike proteins and antibodies with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 pg mL–1and 200 ng mL–1, respectively using a single assay in less than 20 min by integrating microfluidic channels and artificial neural networks (ANNs). The near‐sensor ANN‐aided classification provides high diagnosis accuracy (>93%) with significantly reduced processing time (0.62%) and energy consumption (5.64%) compared to the software‐based ANN. We believe that the development of rapid and accurate diagnosis system for the viral antigens and antibodies detection will play a crucial role in preventing global viral outbreaks.
