Title: Exploring Teachers’ Approaches to Standards-Based Making in Elementary Classrooms
In this paper, we explore how standards-based Making activities offer opportunities for teachers to address interdisciplinary concepts and encourage students to tinker, collaborate, create, and design. This qualitative study draws on results from a two-year, NSF-funded research project that involved the integration of standards-based Mobile Maker Kits into 15 elementary schools within a suburban-rural Southern school district. Specifically, we examine teachers’ goals for using Mobile Maker Kits, as well as how the hook, brainstorm, prototype, share, synthesize framework supported them in integrating Making into their existing standards and curricula.  more » « less

The purpose of this paper is to describe findings from a study in which we investigated a gradual increase of responsibility model to scaffold a 1st and a 3rd grade teacher as they integrated interdisciplinary, standards-based Mobile Maker Kits into their classrooms over the course of an academic year. Qualitative discourse and multimodal analysis techniques were used to investigate teacher practices and beliefs related to the integration of the kits, which included lesson plans linking all activities and materials (e.g., picture books, craft materials, tablets, 3D printers, circuits and other electronic materials) to ELA, science, math, and social studies standards. Findings identify the affordances and constraints of a gradual increase of responsibility model for supporting teachers. We conclude by offering implications for supporting the integration of Making practices into P-12 classrooms.

In this paper, we present the development of a "reconstruction kit" for e-textiles, which transforms fixed-state construction kits---maker tools and technologies that focus on the creation of semi-permanent projects---into flex-state construction kits that allow for endless deconstruction and reconstruction. The kit uses modular pieces that allow students to both solve and create troubleshooting and debugging challenges, which we call "DebugIts." We tested our prototype in an after-school workshop with ten high school students, and report on how they interacted with the kit, as well as what they learned through the DebugIt activities. In the discussion, we delve into the affordances and challenges of using these kits as both learning and assessment tools. We also discuss how our pilot and prototype can inform the design of reconstruction kits in other areas of making.

    This qualitative study examined how a maker-based education workshop affected 20 pre-service STEM teachers’ views of the lesson planning process. Design is used as both an epistemological link between making and teaching practices as well as an analytical lens through which lesson planning could be interpreted and understood. The findings of this study suggest that pre-service teachers who have been introduced to maker-based principles and practices are able to imagine a lesson planning process that is more student-centered and active than the kind which they normally utilize. While there was a contrast between the content of making-based and traditional lesson planning processes, the pre-service teachers’ designs of these processes were largely the same: linear, verbal, and only occasionally reflective or iterative. These characteristics match those of novice designers.

  5. While many digital or physical tools and construction kits have been developed for young makers, far fewer developments have focused on making with living materials, at DNA and cellular scales. In this paper, we review the affordances of various hands-on simulation tools and wet labs for K-12-aged biomakers to be used in school, home and science centers. We discuss how making with biology requires broadened conceptualizations of perceptibility, tinkerability, expressivity, and usability---features commonly considered in the research and design of digital and physical maker media. We conclude with a discussion of affordances and challenges we see in the current generation of tools and labs for supporting making with biology and in which ways these can be expanded to support learning, collaboration, and creativity that are valued in maker education.
