Abstract Studies suggest a strong link between low‐frequency sea level variability in the South Atlantic Bight (SAB) and open ocean dynamics. However, the mechanisms driving this connection remain unclear. By analyzing a high‐resolution, three‐dimensional baroclinic ocean reanalysis, we identify a pathway that links open ocean dynamics to SAB coastal sea level variability through the shelf edge near Cape Hatteras. Gulf Stream meanders in this region induce sea level fluctuations that propagate along the entire SAB shelf. Using an idealized barotropic model, we further demonstrate that topographic waves mediate the propagation of the Gulf Stream signal onto the shelf. Moreover, the Gulf Stream variability is driven by zonal wind stress in the Northwest Atlantic, which is likely modulated by the North Atlantic Oscillation. These findings offer new insights into regional sea level prediction and contribute to broader climate research efforts.

Abstract The path of the Gulf Stream as it leaves the continental shelf near Cape Hatteras is marked by a sharp gradient in ocean temperature known as the North Wall. The latitude location of the Gulf Stream North Wall (GSNW) has previously been estimated by subjective analysis of daily maps of sea surface temperatures. Recently, Watelet et al. (2017) presented an objective procedure by fitting an error function to the SST profile across the Gulf Stream at 81 longitude positions. The fit smooths over not only the GSNW but also the much colder waters from the Labrador Sea on the continental shelf. Watelet et al.’s procedure is therefore likely to misidentify the shelf-slope front as the Gulf Stream North Wall, leading to a systematic northward bias the in North Wall position.

The Pioneer MAB Southern Surface Mooring is located on the Continental Shelf, approximately 100 meters deep. The MAB continental shelf north of Cape Hatteras is characterized by a persistent equator-ward current originating from the north, a shelfbreak front separating shelf and slope waters, distributed buoyancy inputs from rivers, variable wind forcing, and intermittent offshore forcing by Gulf Stream meanders. Coastal gliders are one kind of Mobile Asset that survey the area in and around the array of moorings at the Coastal Pioneer MAB Array. Four Coastal Gliders (Teledyne-Webb Slocum Gliders) sample large, mesoscale features through a broad region (2900 square kilometers) of the outer continental shelf between the shelf break and the Gulf Stream. The role of these gliders in monitoring this broader area is to resolve rings, eddies and meanders from the Gulf Stream as they impinge on the shelf break front. These Teledyne-Webb Slocum Gliders fly through the water column along saw-tooth paths, penetrating the sea surface and diving down to a maximum depth of 1000 meters.more » « less
