Rose Parade Seismology: Signatures of Floats and Bands on Optical Fiber
Abstract The 2020 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, was recorded by the Pasadena distributed acoustic sensing array, which utilizes the underground telecom fiber optic cables as sensors. The floats and bands generate remarkable broadband seismic signatures that can be captured at meters’ resolution.

A total of 14 extensometers were installed in Houston-Galveston Region, Texas, USA, at 12 locations to record compaction. The earliest extensometer began to record compaction in 1973. Records from three of the extensometers installed at Baytown (Shallow and Deep) and Pasadena exhibit anomalous subsidence from 2009 to 2017. The maximum compaction occurred around 2014 with Baytown Shallow recording 164 mm, Baytown Deep 72 mm, and Pasadena 135 mm. The anomalous subsidence exhibits features not related to primary consolidation subsidence (PCS) and secondary consolidation subsidence (SCS) of the Gulf Coast Aquifer System (GCAS). Groundwater level records at the extensometer locations indicate that the anomalous subsidence is not related to groundwater exploitation and creep of the GCAS in this region. Analysis of compaction data for the three sites indicates that the subsidence is partially elastic. Salt dome growth/evolution resulting in activation/reactivation of subsurface and surface faults is proposed as the mechanism responsible for the anomalous subsidence.more » « less

null (Ed.)Pasadena City College (PCC) established a curriculum in laser technology (LaserTech) to provide students with the skills required to work with precision optics, lasers, detectors, electronics, and nanotechnology. Local industry and national laboratories have supported the creation of these courses to ensure that students learn the relevant modern laboratory techniques and technologies. Local industrial partners that have interest in PCC LaserTech students come from sectors such as aerospace, advanced manufacturing, biomedicine, entertainment, communications, and defense, as well as others that develop and apply cutting-edge technologies.more » « less

Abstract The COVID-19 lockdown has unprecedently affected the dynamics of our society. As traffic flow is a good proxy for societal activity, traffic monitoring becomes a useful tool to assess the lockdown’s impacts. Here we turned two strands of unused telecommunication fibers in Pasadena, California into a seismic array of ~5,000 sensors and detected ground vibrations caused by moving vehicles along the streets above the cable. We monitor the number of vehicles and their mean speed between December 2019 and August 2020 in high spatial and temporal resolution, and then analyze the traffic patterns change due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Our results show a city-wide decline in traffic volume and an increase in speed due to the lockdown, although the level of impact varies substantially by streets. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using telecommunication fiber optic cables in traffic monitoring, which has implications for public health, economy, and transportation safety.more » « less

Abstract Radio amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (RASER) was recently discovered in a low‐field NMR spectrometer incorporating a highly specialized radio‐frequency resonator, where a high degree of proton‐spin polarization was achieved by reversible parahydrogen exchange. RASER activity, which results from the coherent coupling between the nuclear spins and the inductive detector, can overcome the limits of frequency resolution in NMR. Here we show that this phenomenon is not limited to low magnetic fields or the use of resonators with high‐quality factors. We use a commercial bench‐top 1.4 T NMR spectrometer in conjunction with pairwise parahydrogen addition producing proton‐hyperpolarized molecules in the Earth's magnetic field (ALTADENA condition) or in a high magnetic field (PASADENA condition) to induce RASER without any radio‐frequency excitation pulses. The results demonstrate that RASER activity can be observed on virtually any NMR spectrometer and measures most of the important NMR parameters with high precision.more » « less
