Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) can improve students’ spatial skills and provide a foundation for success in STEM (Jant et al., 2019). Researchers and educators co-designed a GIS unit in which high school students learned to use ArcGIS software by exploring geospatial patterns in their local communities. Across three teachers, 134 students participated in the unit and completed a geospatial problem-solving assessment. Students’ performance on the assessment significantly increased from pre- to post-test. Students whose teachers had more GIS experience and completed graded GIS assessments scored higher on geospatial assessments and used more spatial language than students whose teachers had less GIS experience and graded on participation. Students’ expectancy, value, and cost of computer science varied across teachers, and may be linked to students’ ability to devote time to mapbuilding and their engagement with a GIS careers guide. We discuss the impacts of teacher training and lesson implementation on students’ geospatial thinking.

DEVELOPING GEOSPATIAL SCIENTISTS – USING STUDENTS AS PARTNERS IN DRONE RESEARCH
Abstract. The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook predicts geospatial careers to increase much faster than average (15%) from 2018 to 2028 with no additional on-the-job training expected. Geospatial professionals can assist in promoting these career opportunities by mentoring high school students through real-world and transferable-skill building activities. The aim is to enhance students’ awareness and stimulate their interest towards STEM education and careers, especially in geospatial data analytics. This area of study incorporates a variety of modern-day tools for analyzing and mapping the Earth. The technology used offers a radically different way in which geospatial scientist produce and use the geospatial information required to manage a large variety of communities and industries.

Langran, E (Ed.)A critical outcome in social studies education is identity development, and an important component of this process is students establishing a sense of place in their communities, nation, and world. Using data from a southwestern city in the United States, researchers investigated the intersection of local history, identity development, and cultural heritage resources using GIS technology. The instructional unit in which students participated utilized a variety of geospatial technologies which facilitated the visualization of geographic concepts, field-based data collection of geocoded places, and creation of a digitally-mediated cultural heritage map, which allowed students to create a narrative around their cultural identity. The study followed an interpretive case study design. Based on the findings from this study, important implications emerged, which are valuable for both future research in this area, as well as for teachers who wish to replicate this pedagogical approach in their own teaching practice. The implications include the flexibility of geospatial technologies for addressing content-area concepts at all levels of the instructional unit, the potential of geospatial technologies for supporting student cultural identity development, and the value of school-university partnerships in promoting innovative teaching strategies in a high school classroom.more » « less

In the U.S., the geography course subject is typically incorporated in social studies classes. Yet, geography has slowly lost its prominence in the U.S. over the years. Social studies teachers reported spending only 10% of their time teaching geography. History, civics/government, and economics are often prioritized (GAO, 2014). As of 2021, there are only three states (Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Utah) that require a standalone geography course for high school graduation (Zadrozny, 2021). The declining prominence of geography in the U.S. curriculum is clearly reflected in student outcomes (see Solem, 2023; GAO, 2014). If we want to better prepare the next generation, we can work to ensure the geography curriculum finds its place. This could mean ensuring sufficient space for geography in social studies, but it would also be relevant for geography to find space in the new computer science curriculum. An assessment about the rollout of the new CS curriculum reveals persisting disparities in terms of access and participation (Code.org, CSTA, & ECEP Alliance, 2020). Exposing students to both geography and computer science may have benefits in terms of broadening participation. The Geospatial Semester, for example, helps K-12 students master geospatial technologies and the authors describe spatial thinking skills as a gateway to STEM careers. Their curiculum has shown that their use of geographic information systems augments student problem solving, particularly for females (Kolvoord, 2021). Therefore, we should test more integration of course subjects (e.g., geography in computer science curriculum, and vice versa).more » « less

The perceptions that physics mentors have about disability in physics influences how they interact with their mentees, and negative biases against disability can influence students to feel discouraged within the physics community. We administered the Disability and Physics Career Survey (DPCS) through physics-specific listservs and at physics-specific conferences to measure practicing physicists' knowledge about disability and their beliefs about the viability of physics careers for individuals with a variety of disability diagnoses. This study uses Cochran's Q and McNemar's R to compare how practicing physicists' perceptions of the viability for the careers of teacher and professor depend on the impairment that an individual is diagnosed with. We find that practicing physicists view these careers as non-viable for those with cognitive impairments and hold other unconscious biases that we outline and interrogate.more » « less

Access to geospatial knowledge in higher education requires broad inclusion of spatial concepts in courses across multiple disciplines. Geospatial competency is required to meet the needs of a rapidly globalized world and is a vital component of modern science education. Geospatial education provides students with proficiency interpreting quantitative and qualitative information and exposes students to technical concepts such as spatial analytics and data management. Despite these numerous benefits, incorporating geospatial concepts and hands on geographic information systems (GIS) experiences within course curriculum can be a challenge for educators.more » « less
