This study aims to examine the impacts of organization’s cybersecurity training program on employees with qualitative data, collected from 33 college students who were attending Norfolk State University while also working either on a part-time or full-time basis participated. Open-ended questions were asked to elicit participants’ perspectives on cybersecurity training and cybersecurity protocols in organizations. Using qualitative data analysis software Nvivo 12, the authors organized and analyzed the collected data with open coding, and selective coding to recognize the major influencing impacts from cybersecurity training on employees’ routine work and behavior. Inductive and grounded theory analysis further elaborates connections between employee’s cybersecurity training and efficiency of organizations. Our findings suggest that on-the-job cybersecurity training provided by the employer is an effective investment for modern organizations to build on the organizational human capital and consequently to improve the efficiency of the organization. Findings from this study corroborates with the tenet of human capital theory that on-the-job educational program or training is economical and effective to manage the human capital challenge for modern organizations.

Cybersecurity Concerns & Teleworking in the COVID-19 Era: A Socio-Cybersecurity Analysis of Organizational Behavior
This research project examines the relationship between teleworking cybersecurity protocols during the COVID-19 era and employee’s perception of their efficiency and performance predictability. COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus and it has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Since March 2020, many employees in the United States who used operate onsite, have been working from their homes (teleworking) to mitigate the spread of the virus through social distancing. The premise of this research project is that teleworking can transform these employees into unintentional insider threats or UITs. Iinterviews were conducted through video conferencing with nine employees in Virginia, USA to examine the problem. This is an interdisciplinary research project which brings together the disciplines of sociology and computer science. Narrative Analysis was used to unpack the interviews. The major findings from the research efforts demonstrate that employees are trusting of the cybersecurity protocols that their organizations implemented but they also believe they are vulnerable, and that the protocols are not as reliable as in-person working arrangements. While the respondents perceived that the cybersecurity protocols lend to performance predictability, they seem to think it disrupts their efficiency.

null (Ed.)The overall goal of the NSF Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) S-STEM funded "Attracting and Cultivating Cybersecurity Experts and Scholars through Scholarships" (ACCESS) program is to increase Cybersecurity-related STEM degree completion of low-income, high-achieving undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need and to generate knowledge about academic success, retention, persistence, graduation, and career pathways of these students to improve the education of future STEM workers. Specifically, ACCESS aims to contribute towards addressing the tremendous governmental and industry need for highly skilled cybersecurity experts. Program objectives include: (1) increasing annual enrollment of students in the B.S. in Computer and Information Sciences programs with specialization in Cybersecurity; (2) enhancing curricular and extra-curricular student support services and activities for students; (3) strengthening the partnerships with computer and information technology employers; and (4) investigating the impact of the curricular and co-curricular activities on student success. While significant research has been done relative to student success, retention, and persistence to graduation in STEM fields, cybersecurity is a new field of study and factors affecting student recruitment, academic success, retention, persistence to graduation within this field are not known. In year 1, students were recruited, applications were evaluated, and scholarships were awarded to nine academically talented students, beginning fall 2020. Of these students, four are female (one is from an underrepresented minority population) and five are male (three are from underrepresented minority populations). The students engage in a set of co-curriculum activities, including participation in: outreach activities; technical and career development seminars; a cybersecurity-focused student organization; and potentially, cybersecurity undergraduate research and summer internship opportunities. The paper and poster describe the background of the ACCESS program, recruitment and selection of ACCESS scholarship recipients, project activities, and challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.more » « less

Improving Belonging and Connectedness in the Cybersecurity Workforce: From College to the ProfessionWhitman, Michael E; Mattord, Herbert J.; Hollingsworth, Carole (Ed.)This article explores the results of a project aimed at supporting community college students in their academic pursuit of an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Cybersecurity through mentorship, collaboration, skill preparation, and other activities and touch points to increase students’ sense of belonging and connectedness in the cybersecurity profession. The goal of the project was focused on developing diverse, educated, and skilled cybersecurity personnel for employment within local industry and government to help curtail the current regional cybersecurity workforce gap that is emblematic of the lack of qualified cybersecurity personnel that presently exists nationwide. Emphasis throughout the project was placed on community building so that students felt a part of the cybersecurity community. A project community survey was distributed to students as both a pre-test when they began the project in Year 1 at the start of their cybersecurity coursework, and again as a post-test at the conclusion of Year 2 when they finished their cybersecurity program. Two project cohorts were employed, and the survey questionnaire measured students’ sense of connectedness and level of learning within the project environment. The results showed a marked increase in both constructs from the pre- to post-survey indicating that students felt a greater sense of community as they moved through the project and experienced increased learning through their cybersecurity program. The study concluded that increased feelings of connectedness to the project activities through authentic shared learning experiences promoted belonging and provided social and academic supports to help project students be successful in their cybersecurity academic program and going forward in the in-demand cybersecurity vocation throughout their professional careers.more » « less

With work arrangements experiencing dramatic changes over the past three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the possibility that altered work arrangements may persist well into the future, the implications of teleworking on activity-travel behavior are potentially profound. This paper aims to substantially add to the body of knowledge about the present and future of telework in the wake of the pandemic through a rigorous analysis of telework arrangements between two distinct time periods. The paper focuses on three key aspects of telework, including whether to telework or not, frequency of telework, and location of telework. Behavioral data for this study is derived from a workplace location choice survey conducted across Texas in February-March 2022, which included a recall component to obtain workplace location choice information in the pre-pandemic period. The evolution of telework arrangements between the pre-and after-pandemic periods is explored through a joint model system estimated using a joint multivariate methodology. Results show that, After COVID, the population of workers is generally inclined toward a hybrid work arrangement, with an overall tendency to engage in a higher frequency of teleworking than Before COVID. Finally, teleworkers have a higher propensity to work only from home as opposed to working only from a third workplace or from a combination of home and a third workplace. Overall, our results indicate that telework arrangements may remain at an elevated level into the future, with home serving as the dominant telework location. These findings suggest that transportation demand forecasting models need to be updated to reflect higher levels of teleworking, as well as the heterogeneity across individuals in teleworking adoption, frequency, and location.more » « less

The increasing cyber threats to online systems have resulted in the need for a more inclusive approach to educating the broader population on preventative measures to reduce the impact of these threats. It is estimated that the cybercrime cost to the world will be $10.5 trillion annually by 2025. No longer can cybersecurity courses be specialized courses in university curricula, but some of these courses need to become core courses for all students. These courses should not only be tailored for university and college students but also be required to thread the curricula, starting in elementary schools. This paper describes our experiences conducting a collaborative cybersecurity project to increase access to undergraduate cybersecurity education. The project was funded by the NSF and Cyber Florida. The project was a collaboration between two Florida public universities. One university is a large urban Hispanic-Serving Institution. We describe how the Software Engineering and Programming Cyberlearning Environment (SEP-CyLE), in conjunction with other cybersecurity systems, was used to develop basic cybersecurity materials, labs, and activities for undergraduate students and instructors. SEP-CyLE motivates students to learn in an interactive environment where they can provide feedback to their peers while employing three learning and engagement strategies (LESs). These LESs include collaborative learning, gamification, and social interaction. We present the objectives of the project, describe how the objectives were met, briefly describe SEP-CyLE, and provide data showing students’ interactions with SEP-CyLE. The data retrieved from SEP-CyLE provides insight into how the learning environment was used, students’ performance on the learning objects, and the impact of the LESs on students’ overall performance in an introductory cybersecurity course.more » « less
