Title: Erratum to: Measurement of differential cross sections for single diffractive dissociation in $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 8 TeV pp collisions using the ATLAS ALFA spectrometer
Figure 5b of the paper [1] contained a misinterpretation in the comparison between the reported new ATLAS measurement of the process pp → Xp and previously published CMS data [2]. The ATLAS measurement corresponds to cases where either proton dissociates.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We report on the observation and measurement of astrometry, photometry, morphology, and activity of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, also designated C/2025 N1 (ATLAS) with the NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Comet 3I/ATLAS, the third known interstellar object, was discovered on UT 2025 July 1. Rubin Observatory had coincidentally collected images of the object’s region of the sky during routine commissioning. Facilitated by Rubin’s high resolution and large aperture, we successfully recovered object detections from Rubin observations spanning UT 2025 June 21 (10 days before discovery, when 3I/ATLAS was 4.5 au from the Sun) through the date of discovery, and we acquired additional images through UT 2025 July 20 as part of commissioning. We measure on-sky locations of 3I/ATLAS in Rubinugrizybands, with a typical precision of ∼70 mas, and briefly describe the reason this is coarser than our measured static source astrometric precision of ∼3 mas in Rubin images. We measuregrizymagnitudes of 3I/ATLAS photometry at ∼0.01 mag precision, detecting no short-term photometric variability above 0.01 mag. We derive an estimated near-nucleus dust-to-nucleus scattering cross-sectional ratio ofη ≳ 13 on UT 2025 July 2 based on Rubin photometry and an upper limit nucleus size computed from Hubble Space Telescope observations. We find Rubin colors ofg − r =  (0.657 ± 0.013) mag,r − i =  (0.235 ± 0.018) mag,i − z = (0.147 ±  0.042) mag, andz − y =  (0.047 ± 0.052) mag. These data represent the earliest observations of this object by a large (≳8 m class) telescope and illustrate the type of measurements (and discoveries) Rubin’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time will provide after it begins in early 2026.

  2. A bstract A measurement of four-top-quark production using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb − 1 is presented. Events are selected if they contain a single lepton (electron or muon) or an opposite-sign lepton pair, in association with multiple jets. The events are categorised according to the number of jets and how likely these are to contain b -hadrons. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. The measured four-top-quark production cross section is found to be $$ {26}_{-15}^{+17} $$ 26 − 15 + 17 fb, with a corresponding observed (expected) significance of 1.9 (1.0) standard deviations over the background-only hypothesis. The result is combined with the previous measurement performed by the ATLAS Collaboration in the multilepton final state. The combined four-top-quark production cross section is measured to be $$ {24}_{-6}^{+7} $$ 24 − 6 + 7 fb, with a corresponding observed (expected) signal significance of 4.7 (2.6) standard deviations over the background-only predictions. It is consistent within 2.0 standard deviations with the Standard Model expectation of 12 . 0 ± 2 . 4 fb.

  4. Probable Maximum Storms (PMS) are synthetic design storms represented by idealized hyetographs. They play a critical role in assessing extreme rainfall events over extended durations and are widely applied in the hydraulic design of infrastructure such as dams, culverts, and bridges. PMS provide essential input for estimating Probable Maximum Floods (PMF), vital for analyzing worst-case flood scenarios with the potential to cause catastrophic loss of life and property. Despite their importance, the estimation of design storms at ungauged locations, particularly across synoptic scales, remains a major scientific and engineering challenge. This study addresses this gap by utilizing the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) dataset, which provides near-global estimated precipitation coverage. IMERG’s 24 h design storm hyetographs (expressed as cumulative percentage of precipitation throughout a 24 h period) were modeled and compared with similar reference data from NOAA Atlas 14 across twenty-eight regions and seven larger zones covering most of the conterminous United States (CONUS). Across the regions, the average root mean square error (RMSE) was 3.7%, with a mean relative bias (RB) of 1.4%. The mean normalized storm loading index (NSLI) from NOAA Atlas 14 was −7.7%, indicating that 57.7% of the total precipitation was received during the first 12 h of the storm, whereas IMERG storms exhibited a mean NSLI of −4.1%, suggesting they are also frontloaded but to a lesser extent. Across the broader zones, the mean RMSE was 4.8% and the mean RB was 1.1%. The mean NSLI values were −9.7% for NOAA Atlas 14 and −5.7% for IMERG, again indicating that IMERG storms are less frontloaded. When design storm families were estimated corresponding with different degrees of frontloading (corresponding to the 10, 20, …, 90% deciles of NSLI), the 40th to 60th percentile range exhibited the strongest agreement between IMERG and NOAA Atlas 14 hyetographs.

The High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) provides the opportunity to study heavy ion, proton-nucleus, photon-nucleus and photon-photon collisions with unprecedented luminosities at the TeV scale. The LHC heavy ion community has mapped out an extensive range of physics measurements at the HLLHC that will push forward our understanding of both QCD, QED and even electroweak physics. The measurement of forward neutrons and photons in Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs) is essential for event classification and triggering. In order to reach the required luminosities, the LHC interaction regions will be redesigned, necessitating the need to build new ZDCs that will be both narrower and much more radiation tolerant. This challenge motivated the formation of a joint project between ATLAS and CMS to build new ZDCs for Run 4, JZCaP. The ZDCs are based on radiation-hard fused silica rods that produce Cherenkov light. These rods have been developed by Heraeus Quartzglas in collaboration with JZCaP and the LHC BRAN and FLUKA groups. The Run 4 ZDCs (HL-ZDCs) are the first joint detector project between CMS and ATLAS. This talk will present the capabilities of the new ZDCs and recent R&D highlights.
