Title: Data driven forecasting of aperiodic motions of non-autonomous systems
In the present effort, a data-driven modeling approach is undertaken to forecast aperiodic responses of non-autonomous systems. As a representative non-autonomous system, a harmonically forced Duffing oscillator is considered. Along with it, an experimental prototype of a Duffing oscillator is studied. Data corresponding to chaotic motions are obtained through simulations of forced oscillators with hardening and softening characteristics and experiments with a bistable oscillator. Portions of these datasets are used to train a neural machine and make response predictions and forecasts for motions on the corresponding attractors. The neural machine is constructed by using a deep recurrent neural network architecture. The experiments conducted with the different numerical and experimental chaotic time-series data confirm the effectiveness of the constructed neural network for the forecasting of non-autonomous system responses.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Inspired by the ancient Japanese art of kirigami, slitted plastic sheets, termed kirigami springs, were designed, fabricated, and characterized, utilizing the quasi-mechanism behavior of various slit patterns. Quasi-static tension tests determined the spring stiffness, and experimental transient responses were analyzed to infer system damping. A system of two parallel-connected kirigami springs, attached to a mass oscillating on a smooth track, was modeled as a 1 DOF Helmholtz-Duffing oscillator with nonlinear damping. The system's free and forced responses were compared to experimental and numerical results using asymptotically valid solutions derived via the Method of Multiple Time Scales. This approach provides an unprecedented degree of programmability in the constitutive relations for nonlinear oscillators and is straightforward to implement.

  2. We formulate a renormalization-group approach to a general nonlinear oscillator problem. The approach is based on the exact group law obeyed by solutions of the corresponding ordinary differential equation. We consider both the autonomous models with time-independent parameters, as well as nonautonomous models with slowly varying parameters. We show that the renormalization-group equations for the nonautonomous case can be used to determine the geometric phase acquired by the oscillator during the change of its parameters. We illustrate the obtained results by applying them to the Van der Pol and Van der Pol-Duffing models.

  3. Abstract This paper examines the effect of viscoelasticity on the dynamic behavior of a bistable dome-shaped structure represented as a lumped parameter viscoelastic von Mises truss. The viscoelastic system is governed by a third order jerk equation. The presence of viscoelasticity also introduces additional time scales and degrees of freedom into the problem when compared to their viscous counterparts, thus making the study of these systems in the presence of harmonic loading even more interesting. It is highly likely that the system would exhibit non-regular behavior for some combination of forcing frequency and forcing amplitude. With this motivation, we start by studying the dynamics of a harmonically forced von Mises truss in the presence of viscous damping only. This leads to a Duffing type equation with an additional quadratic non-linearity. We demonstrate some of the rich dynamic behavior that this system exhibits in some parameter ranges. This provides useful insight into the possible behavior of the viscoelastic system. The viscous damper is then replaced by a viscoelastic unit. We show that the system can exhibit both regular as well as chaotic behavior. The threshold limit for the chaotic motion has been determined using Melnikov’s criteria and verified through numerical simulations using the largest Lyapunov exponent.

  4. Abstract In this paper, the forced response of a two degrees-of-freedom (DOF) bilinear oscillator with initial gaps involving inelastic collision is discussed. In particular, a focus is placed upon the experimental verification of the generalized bilinear amplitude approximation (BAA) method, which can be used for the accurate estimation of forced responses for bilinear systems with initial gaps. Both experimental and numerical investigations on the system have been carried out. An experimental setup that is capable of representing the dynamics of a 2DOF oscillator has been developed, and forced response tests have been conducted under swept-sine base excitation for different initial gap sizes. The steady-state response of the system under base excitation was computed by both traditional time integration and BAA. It is shown that the results of experiments and numerical predictions are in good agreement especially at resonance. However, slight differences in the responses obtained from both numerical methods are observed. It was found that the time duration where the DOFs are in contact with each other predicted by BAA is longer than that predicted by time integration. Spectral analyses have also been conducted on both experimental and numerical results. It was observed that in a frequency range where intermittent contact between the masses occurs, super-harmonic components of the excitation frequency are present in the spectra. Moreover, as the initial gap size increases, the frequency band where the super-harmonic components are observed decreases.

  5. We investigate the nonlinear vibration behavior of a shape-morphing cantilever plate excited by base acceleration and shape-morphing deformation, imposed by a periodic moment on the sides of the plate. The interplay of shape-morphing and base excitation causes the system to demonstrate distinctive and tunable nonlinear behavior. We present frequency responses based on a finite element parametric study of the actuation parameters, and propose a minimal modeling of the system based on the Duffing oscillator. This modeling is related to the physical actuation for analysis of nonlinear curvature-based tunable systems and could be used in future design scenarios.
