A novel, mixed‐ligand chiral rhodium(II) catalyst, Rh2(S‐NTTL)3(dCPA), has enabled the first enantioselective total synthesis of the natural product piperarborenine B. A crystal structure of Rh2(S‐NTTL)3(dCPA) reveals a “chiral crown” conformation with a bulky dicyclohexylphenyl acetate ligand and three N‐naphthalimido groups oriented on the same face of the catalyst. The natural product was prepared on large scale using rhodium‐catalyzed bicyclobutanation/ copper‐catalyzed homoconjugate addition chemistry in the key step. The route proceeds in ten steps with an 8 % overall yield and 92 %

Abstract Regio‐ and stereoselective distal allylic/benzylic C−H functionalization of allyl and benzyl silyl ethers was achieved using rhodium(II) carbenes derived from N‐sulfonyltriazoles and aryldiazoacetates as carbene precursors. The bulky rhodium carbenes led to highly site‐selective functionalization of less activated allylic and benzylic C−H bonds even in the presence of electronically preferred C−H bonds located α to oxygen. The dirhodium catalyst Rh2(S‐NTTL)4is the most effective chiral catalyst for triazole‐derived carbene transformations, whereas Rh2(S‐TPPTTL)4works best for carbenes derived from aryldiazoacetates. The reactions afford a variety of δ‐functionalized allyl silyl ethers with high diastereo‐ and enantioselectivity. The utility of the present method was demonstrated by its application to the synthesis of a 3,4‐disubstituted

Abstract Rh(I)-catalyzed cycloisomerizations of bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes provide a fruitful approach to cyclopropane-fused heterocycles. Products and stereochemical outcome are highly dependent on catalyst. The triphenylphosphine (PPh3) ligand provides pyrrolidines, placing substituents
anti to the cyclopropyl group. The 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) ligand yields azepanes with substituentssyn to the cyclopropyl group. In this work, quantum mechanical DFT calculations pinpoint a reversal of regio- and diastereoselectivity, suggesting a concerted (double) C−C bond cleavage and rhodium carbenoid formation, driven by strain-release. The ligand-influenced cleavage step determines the regioselectivity of carbometalation and product formation, and suggests new applications of bicyclobutanes. -
Abstract The role of ligands in rhodium‐ and iridium‐catalyzed
Para hydrogen Induced Polarization (PHIP) and SABRE (signal amplification by reversible exchange) chemistry has been studied in the benchmark systems, [Rh(diene)(diphos)]+and [Ir(NHC)(sub)3(H)2]+, and shown to have a great impact on the degree of hyperpolarization observed. Here, we examine the role of the flanking moieties in the electron‐rich monoanionic bis(carbene) aryl pincer ligand,ArCCC (Ar=Dipp, 2,6‐diisopropyl or Mes, 2,4,6‐trimethylphenyl) on the cobalt‐catalyzed PHIP and PHIP‐IE (PHIP via Insertion and Elimination) chemistry that we have previously reported. The mesityl groups were exchanged for diisopropylphenyl groups to generate the (DippCCC)Co(N2) catalyst, which resulted in faster hydrogenation and up to 390‐fold1H signal enhancements, larger than that of the (MesCCC)Co‐py (py=pyridine) catalyst. Additionally, the synthesis of the (DippCCC)Rh(N2) complex is reported and applied towards the hydrogenation of ethyl acrylate withpara hydrogen to generate modest signal enhancements of both1H and13C nuclei. Lastly, the generation of two (MesCCC)Ir complexes is presented and applied towards SABRE and PHIP‐IE chemistry to only yield small1H signal enhancements of the partially hydrogenated product (PHIP) with no SABRE hyperpolarization.
