Title: Cooperative Cluster Metalation and Ligand Migration in Zirconium Metal–Organic Frameworks
Abstract

Cooperative cluster metalation and ligand migration were performed on a Zr‐MOF, leading to the isolation of unique bimetallic MOFs based on decanuclear Zr6M4(M=Ni, Co) clusters. The M2+reacts with the μ3‐OH and terminal H2O ligands on an 8‐connected [Zr6O4(OH)8(H2O)4] cluster to form a bimetallic [Zr6M4O8(OH)8(H2O)8] cluster. Along with the metalation of Zr6cluster, ligand migration is observed in which a Zr–carboxylate bond dissociates to form a M–carboxylate bond. Single‐crystal to single‐crystal transformation is realized so that snapshots for cooperative cluster metalation and ligand migration processes are captured by successive single‐crystal X‐ray structures. In3+was metalated into the same Zr‐MOF which showed excellent catalytic activity in the acetaldehyde cyclotrimerization reaction. This work not only provides a powerful tool to functionalize Zr‐MOFs with other metals, but also structurally elucidates the formation mechanism of the resulting heterometallic MOFs.

  1. Abstract

Three new polynuclear clusters with the formulae [Mn10O4(OH)(OMe){(py)2C(O)2}2{(py)2C(OMe)(O)}4(MeCO2)6](ClO4)2(1), Na[Mn12O2(OH)3(OMe){(py)2C(O)2}6{(py)2C(OH)(O)}2(MeCO2)2(H2O)10](ClO4)8(2) and [Mn12O4(OH)2{(py)2C(O)2}6{(py)2C(OMe)(O)}(MeCO2)3(NO3)3(H2O)(DMF)2](NO3)2(3) were prepared from the combination of di‐2‐pyridyl ketone, (py)2CO, with the aliphatic diols (1,3‐propanediol (pdH2) or 1,4‐butanediol (1,4‐bdH2)) in Mn carboxylate chemistry. The reported compounds do not include the aliphatic diols employed in this reaction scheme; however, their use is essential for the formation of13. The crystal structures of13are based on multilayer cores which, to our knowledge, are reported for the first time in Mn cluster chemistry. Direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility studies showed the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions within13. Alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility studies revealed the presence of out‐of‐phase signals below 3.0 K for2and3indicating the slow relaxation of the magnetization vector, characteristic of single‐molecule magnets; theUeffvalue of2was found to be 23 K and the preexponential factorτ0~7.6×10−9 s.

  2. Abstract

2D metal–organic frameworks (2D‐MOFs) have recently emerged as promising materials for gas separations, sensing, conduction, and catalysis. However, the stability of these 2D‐MOF catalysts and the tunability over catalytic environments are limited. Herein, it is demonstrated that 2D‐MOFs can act as stable and highly accessible catalyst supports by introducing more firmly anchored photosensitizers as bridging ligands. An ultrathin MOF nanosheet‐based material, Zr‐BTB (BTB = 1,3,5‐tris(4‐carboxyphenyl)benzene), is initially constructed by connecting Zr6‐clusters with the tritopic carboxylate linker. Surface modification of the Zr‐BTB structure was realized through the attachment of porphyrin‐based carboxylate ligands on the coordinatively unsaturated Zr metal sites in the MOF through strong Zr‐carboxylate bond formation. The functionalized MOF nanosheet, namely PCN‐134‐2D, acts as an efficient photocatalyst for1O2generation and artemisinin production. Compared to the 3D analogue (PCN‐134‐3D), PCN‐134‐2D allows for fast reaction kinetics due to the enhanced accessibility of the catalytic sites within the structure and facile substrate diffusion. Additionally, PCN‐134(Ni)‐2D exhibits an exceptional yield of artemisinin, surpassing all reported homo‐ or heterogeneous photocatalysts for the artemisinin production.

Two novel sulfonated CNN‐pincer ligands1band1cand the corresponding chloro and aqua complexes K[CNNLPtCl] andCNNLPt(H2O),3b3cand2b2c, were prepared and fully characterized including single crystal X‐ray diffraction. Along with the previously described complexes2aand3a, the derivatives of a CNN pincer ligand1a, these complexes form a family of structurally similar compounds where the pincer core rigidity increases in the series2a (3a)<2b (3b)<2c(3c), as deduced from their XRD data. The increased ligand rigidity affects the aqua ligand dissociation energy of theCNNLPt(H2O) complexes, as it follows from DFT calculations and as is reflected in the increased reactivity of the aqua complexes2a,2band2cin processes that involve aqua ligand loss. Among these processes the formation of the presumed dinuclear complexesCNNL2Pt2and, importantly, catalytic C−D bond cleavage in C6D6were studied in 2,2,2‐trifluoroethanol solutions. The C−D bond cleavage reactivity was quantified as the rate of H/D exchange between C6D6and CF3CH2OH at 80 °C.

  4. Abstract

Ammonia is a widely used toxic industrial chemical that can cause severe respiratory ailments. Therefore, understanding and developing materials for its efficient capture and controlled release is necessary. One such class of materials is 3D porous metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) with exceptional surface areas and robust structures, ideal for gas storage/transport applications. Herein, interactions between ammonia and UiO‐67‐X (X: H, NH2, CH3) zirconium MOFs were studied under cryogenic, ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions using temperature‐programmed desorption mass spectrometry (TPD‐MS) and in‐situ temperature‐programmed infrared (TP‐IR) spectroscopy. Ammonia was observed to interact with μ3−OH groups present on the secondary building unit of UiO‐67‐X MOFs via hydrogen bonding. TP‐IR studies revealed that under cryogenic UHV conditions, UiO‐67‐X MOFs are stable towards ammonia sorption. Interestingly, an increase in the intensity of the C−H stretching mode of the MOF linkers was detected upon ammonia exposure, attributed to NH−π interactions with linkers. These same binding interactions were observed in grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Based on TPD‐MS, binding strength of ammonia to three MOFs was determined to be approximately 60 kJ mol−1, suggesting physisorption of ammonia to UiO‐67‐X. In addition, missing linker defect sites, consisting of H2O coordinated to Zr4+sites, were detected through the formation ofnNH3⋅H2O clusters, characterized through in‐situ IR spectroscopy. Structures consistent with these assignments were identified through density functional theory calculations. Tracking these bands through adsorption on thermally activated MOFs gave insight into the dehydroxylation process of UiO‐67 MOFs. This highlights an advantage of using NH3for the structural analysis of MOFs and developing an understanding of interactions between ammonia and UiO‐67‐X zirconium MOFs, while also providing directions for the development of stable materials for efficient toxic gas sorption.

  5. Abstract

The trichromium cluster (tbsL)Cr3(thf) ([tbsL]6−=[1,3,5‐C6H9(NC6H4o‐NSitBuMe2)3]6−) exhibits steric‐ and solvation‐controlled reactivity with organic azides to form three distinct products: reaction of (tbsL)Cr3(thf) with benzyl azide forms a symmetrized bridging imido complex (tbsL)Cr3(μ3‐NBn); reaction with mesityl azide in benzene affords a terminally bound imido complex (tbsL)Cr3(μ1‐NMes); whereas the reaction with mesityl azide in THF leads to terminal N‐atom excision from the azide to yield the nitride complex (tbsL)Cr3(μ3‐N). The reactivity of this complex demonstrates the ability of the cluster‐templating ligand to produce a well‐defined polynuclear transition metal cluster that can access distinct single‐site and cooperative reactivity controlled by either substrate steric demands or reaction media.
