Title: The prosody of presupposition projection in naturally-occurring utterances
In experimental studies, prosodically-marked pragmatic focus has been found to influence the projection of factive presuppositions of utterances like "these parents didn’t know the kid was gone" (Cummins and Rohde, 2015; Tonhauser, 2016; Djarv and Bacovcin, 2017), supporting question-based analyses of projection (i.a., Abrusan, 2011; Abrusan, 2016; Simonset al., 2017; Beaver et al., 2017). However, no prior work has explored whether this effect extends to naturally-occurring utterances. In a large set of naturally-occurring utterances, we find that prosodically-marked focus influences projection in utterances with factive embeddingpredicates, but not those with non-factive predicates. We argue that our findings support an account where lexical semantics of the predicate contributes to projection to the extent that they admit QUD alternatives that can be assumed to entail the content of the complement.  more » « less

Third-state dynamics (Angluin et al. 2008; Perron et al. 2009) is a well-known process for quickly and robustly computing approximate majority through interactions between randomly-chosen pairs of agents. In this paper, we consider this process in a new model with persistent-state catalytic inputs, as well as in the presence of transient leak faults. Based on models considered in recent protocols for populations with persistent-state agents (Dudek et al. 2017; Alistarh et al. 2017; Alistarh et al. 2020), we formalize a Catalytic Input (CI) model comprising n input agents and m worker agents. For m = Θ(n), we show that computing the parity of the input population with high probability requires at least Ω(n2) total interactions, demonstrating a strong separation between the CI and standard population protocol models. On the other hand, we show that the third-state dynamics can be naturally adapted to this new model to solve approximate majority in O(n log n) total steps with high probability when the input margin is Ω(√(n log n)), which preserves the time and space efficiency of the corresponding protocol in the original model. We then show the robustness of third-state dynamics protocols to the transient leak faults considered by (Alistarh et al. 2017; Alistarh et al 2020). In both the original and CI models, these protocols successfully compute approximate majority with high probability in the presence of leaks occurring at each time step with probability β ≤ O(√(n log n}/n). The resilience of these dynamics to adversarial leaks exhibits a subtle connection to previous results involving Byzantine agents.

  2. Abstract Climate warming in combination with nutrient enrichment can greatly promote phytoplankton proliferation and blooms in eutrophic waters. Lake Taihu, China, is a large, shallow and eutrophic system. Since 2007, this lake has experienced extensive nutrient input reductions aimed at controlling cyanobacterial blooms. However, intense cyanobacterial blooms have persisted through 2017 with a record‐setting bloom occurring in May 2017. Causal analysis suggested that this bloom was sygenerically driven by high external loading from flooding in 2016 in the Taihu catchment and a notable warmer winter during 2016/2017. High precipitation during 2016 was associated with a strong 2015/2016 El Niño in combination with the joint effects of Atlantic Multi‐decadal Oscillation (AMO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), while persistent warmth during 2016/2017 was strongly related to warm phases of AMO and PDO. The 2017 blooms elevated water column pH and led to dissolved oxygen depletion near the sediment, both of which mobilized phosphorus from the sediment to overlying water, further promoting cyanobacterial blooms. Our finding indicates that regional climate anomalies exacerbated eutrophication via a positive feedback mechanism, by intensifying internal nutrient cycling and aggravating cyanobacterial blooms. In light of global expansion of eutrophication and blooms, especially in large, shallow and eutrophic lakes, these regional effects of climate anomalies are nested within larger scale global warming predicted to continue in the foreseeable future.

The goal of this document is to describe the file formats used to store annotations for the Temple University Hospital EEG (TUEG) Corpus (Obeid & Picone, 2016). Subsets of the corpus have been manually annotated (Veloso et al., 2017) and are available from our project web site (Choi et al., 2017). These annotations are stored in two formats: a label file (*.lbl*) that represents an annotation as a hierarchical graph, and a time-synchronous event file (*.tse*) that represents an annotation as a flat series of events with start and stop times, type of seizure, and probability. In this document, we describe each of these formats. Tools to read and display this information are also available from our project web site (Capp et al., 2018; McHugh & Picone, 2016).

New York: Springer, 2019) and direct simple shear tests (Bastidas, Ottawa F-65 Sand Characterization. PhD Dissertation, University of California, Davis, 2016) are available for Ottawa F-65 sand. The focus of this element test simulation exercise is to assess the performance of the constitutive models used by participating team in simulating the results of undrained stress-controlled cyclic triaxial tests on Ottawa F-65 sand for three different void ratios (El Ghoraiby et al., LEAP 2017: Soil characterization and element tests for Ottawa F65 sand. The George Washington University, Washington, DC, 2017; El Ghoraiby et al., LEAP-2017 GWU Laboratory Tests. DesignSafe-CI, Dataset, 2018; El Ghoraiby et al., Physical and mechanical properties of Ottawa F65 Sand. In B. Kutter et al. (Eds.), Model tests and numerical simulations of liquefaction and lateral spreading: LEAP-UCD-2017. New York: Springer, 2019). The simulated stress paths, stress-strain responses, and liquefaction strength curves show that majority of the models used in this exercise are able to provide a reasonably good match to liquefaction strength curves for the highest void ratio (0.585) but the differences between the simulations and experiments become larger for the lower void ratios (0.542 and 0.515).

In the US, it is a well-known and recognized fact that students from underrepresented groups have suffered longstanding inequities in educational settings. This includes entrance into and success within the higher education system (Adwere-Boamah, 2015; National Science Board, 2020; Whittaker & Montgomery, 2012). The enormous growth in the Hispanic population of the United States and the growth of the Hispanic population in the higher education system has made the imbalance more evident (Gramlich, 2017; National Center for Education Statistics, 2020). Despite being the largest minority group in the country (US Census Bureau, 2021) and in higher education (Postsecondary National Policy Institute, 2021), persistence in college and degree completion rates paralleling that of persons who identify with a White, European background has not evolved (Chun et al., 2016; Gramlich, 2017). These disparities emphasize the need to understand the characteristics of Hispanic/Latinx students in order to better serve their needs in general and in all spheres of education. As a result, an increasing number of studies are focusing on the background, experiences, and perspectives of Hispanic/Latinx individuals and students in a variety of settings and contexts (Champagne et al., 2016; Flores & Park, 2015: Ramos et al., 2021; Rodriguez Amaya et al., 2018; Zhan & Xiang, 2018).
