Title: Food Insecurity of Children in the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina Food Bank Service Area
North Carolina is labeled as the 10th hungriest state in America, with almost 1 in 5 children in North Carolina facing hunger regularly. Based on these numbers alone, childhood hunger is an important issue that needs to be addressed. This paper focuses on the thirty-four counties serviced by the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Each county is mapped out, showing the percentage of children receiving free or reduced meals. These numbers are then compared to the number of Weekend Power Packs, Kid Cafes, and School Pantry locations per county. This project illustrates the strength of visual analytics for decision making  more » « less

Food insecurity, defined as insufficient access to food for a healthy and active life, affected approximately 12.8% of U.S. households in 2022. A concerted effort from both the government and non-government organizations is underway to address this challenge in the United States. This study centers on the Foodbank of Central and Eastern North Carolina (FBCENC), a nonprofit hunger relief organization pivotal in collecting and distributing food donations to local agencies serving individuals in need. However, despite the critical role of food banks, nutritional considerations are often overlooked. To address this gap, the study employs the Healthy Eating Research (HER) Nutrition Guideline, categorizing nutrition types (Red, Yellow, and Green) to assess and enhance the nutritional equity of the current distribution system. A linear programming model is proposed, and equity is adopted as the performance measure. The study aims to develop a model that strategically reduces nutritional disparities across the network. By incorporating HER guidelines and emphasizing equity in distribution, this research contributes to the broader objective of creating a more nutritionally equitable response to food insecurity within the non-profit sector.

North Carolina is the third most hurricane-prone states in the US. In 2018, Hurricane Florence caused a lot of damages to households in North Carolina. The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina (FBCENC) serves 34 counties in North Carolina, and 22 of them were affected by Hurricane Florence. This research aims to investigate the impact of Hurricane Florence on the operations of FBCENC. We developed interactive dashboards to visualize food bank operational data and other relevant data and studied the trends and patterns of food distribution in three key stages: preparedness, response, and recovery. These dashboards enable food bank operations managers to explore and interact with the data with ease to explore the operational data at different stages, at different branch level, and on a different time scale (monthly, weekly, or daily). The impact on the operations of affected service areas vs. not affected areas could be investigated as well. The findings of this research will provide insight into how humanitarian relief agencies can better prepare for, respond to, and recover from the disruptions caused by hurricanes.

  3. Food insecurity, an economic and social condition where households have limited access to nutritious food, is a long-standing and growing problem in both the rural and urban areas of the United States. Food deserts refer to areas that do not have adequate food access to affordable and nutritious food. Food deserts can be characterized by availability, accessibility, accommodation, affordability, and acceptability (5A’s). This research investigates food deserts in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, which includes the city of Charlotte. The food insecure population estimate in Mecklenburg County is about 15% which is higher than the national average of 11%. Using visual analytics, a combination of analytics and human factors, this study aims to examine how age, education, and income are related to food deserts in Mecklenburg County. Data gathered from US Census Bureau was used for analysis. Results indicated that education and food desert status, and age and food desert status in Mecklenburg County were related.

  4. Food insecurity affects more than 41 million people annually in the United States. Within the Feeding America network, approximately 200 food banks are working throughout the US to serve people in need with donated food. Satisfying hunger need of food insecure people with limited supply is a challenge for these food banks. A numerical study is performed on data from Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina (FBCENC) to capture the major attributes controlling its food distribution system. FBCENC seeks to distribute donated food equitably so that each service area (county) receives food proportional to its demand while minimizing the undistributed food donations. In addition to seeking equitable and effective food distribution policies, FBCENC wants to identify distribution branches to maximize the accessibility of the counties to donated food. An assignment and distribution model is developed to minimize the cost of maintaining a user-specified cap on the maximum inequity in food distribution. A sensitivity analysis between the user-specified maximum inequity cap and effectiveness shows the effectiveness of donated food distribution can be improved significantly by sacrificing equitable distribution slightly.

  5. Multiple species of ticks, including Ixodes scapularis (Say, Ixodida:Ixodidae), Amblyomma americanum (L., Ixodida:Ixodidae), and Dermacentor variabilis (Say, Ixodida:Ixodidae), occur in high and increasing abundance in both the northeast and southeast United States. North Carolina is at the nexus of spread of these species, with high occurrence and abundance of I. scapularis to the north and A. americanum to the south. Despite this, there are few records of these species in the Piedmont of North Carolina, including the greater Charlotte metropolitan area. Here, we update the known occurrence and abundance of these species in the North Carolina Piedmont. We surveyed for ticks using cloth drags, CO2 traps, and leaf litter samples at a total of 79 sites within five locations: Mecklenburg County, South Mountains State Park, Stone Mountain State Park, Duke Forest, and Morrow Mountain State Park, all in North Carolina, during the late spring, summer, and fall seasons of 2019. From these surveys, we had only 20 tick captures, illuminating the surprisingly low abundance of ticks in this region of North Carolina. Our results indicate the possibility of underlying habitat and host factors limiting tick distribution and abundance in the North Carolina Piedmont.
