Title: Adult Education at Biological Field Stations: Building Capacity for Science Learning
An understanding of science concepts is important for living in modern society. Supporting adults’ science learning can be particularly challenging because most adults no longer attend formal educational institutions where access and opportunities are facilitated by teachers and school-sponsored programs. Biological field stations (BFSs) are a newly recognized educational venue that hold considerable intrinsic value for adult science education. In this study, we conducted a survey of 223 U.S. BFSs about their nonformal and informal educational outreach programs for adults. Results show BFSs offer a wide variety of science learning programs for adults, focused heavily on experiential learning to engage learners. These experiences promote interactions with the natural environment and are perceived to increase participants’ knowledge and skills. This study has implications for how adult educators can better support the professional development of science educators at BFSs and enrich the general public's science learning.  more » « less

  1. Speech and language development are early indicators of overall analytical and learning ability in children. The preschool classroom is a rich language environment for monitoring and ensuring growth in young children by measuring their vocal interactions with teachers and classmates. Early childhood researchers are naturally interested in analyzing naturalistic vs controlled lab recordings to measure both quality and quantity of such interactions. Unfortunately, present-day speech technologies are not capable of addressing the wide dynamic scenario of early childhood classroom settings. Due to the diversity of acoustic events/conditions in such daylong audio streams, automated speaker diarization technology would need to be advanced to address this challenging domain for segmenting audio as well as information extraction. This study investigates alternate deep learning-based lightweight, knowledge-distilled, diarization solutions for segmenting classroom interactions of 3–5 years old children with teachers. In this context, the focus on speech-type diarization which classifies speech segments as being either from adults or children partitioned across multiple classrooms. Our lightest CNN model achieves a best F1-score of ∼76.0% on data from two classrooms, based on dev and test sets of each classroom. It is utilized with automatic speech recognition-based re-segmentation modules to perform child-adult diarization. Additionally, F1-scores are obtained for individual segments with corresponding speaker tags (e.g., adult vs child), which provide knowledge for educators on child engagement through naturalistic communications. The study demonstrates the prospects of addressing educational assessment needs through communication audio stream analysis, while maintaining both security and privacy of all children and adults. The resulting child communication metrics have been used for broad-based feedback for teachers with the help of visualizations.

STEM education is often disconnected from innovation and design, where students self-identify as solely scientists, artists, or technophiles, but rarely see the connection between the disciplines. The inclusion of arts (A) in STEM education (STEAM) offers an educational approach where students see how subjects are integrated through learning experiences that apply to everyday, developing personal connections and becoming motivated learners who understand how skills from each subject are needed for future careers. This project addresses both the disconnect between science, design, and technology and how high school students can benefit from innovative learning experiences in plant science that integrate these disciplines while gaining invaluable skills for future STEM careers. We used the Science-Art-Design-Technology (SADT) pedagogical approach, characterized by its project-based learning that relies on student teamwork and facilitation by educators. This approach was applied through a STEAM educational 3D plant module where teams: 1) investigated plants under research at a plant science research center, 2) designed and created 3D models of those plants, 3) experienced the application of 3D modeling in augmented and virtual reality platforms, and 4) disseminated project results. We used a mixed-method approach using qualitative and quantitative research methods to assess the impact of the 3D modeling module on students’ understanding of the intersection of art and design with science, learning and skills gains, and interests in STEAM subjects and careers. A total of 160 students from eight educational institutions (schools and informal programs) implemented the module. Student reflection questions revealed that students see art and design playing a role in science mainly by facilitating communication and further understanding and fostering new ideas. They also see science influencing art and design through the artistic creation process. The students acknowledged learning STEAM content and applications associated with plant science, 3D modeling, and augmented and virtual reality. They also acknowledged gaining research skills and soft skills such as collaboration and communication. Students also increased their interest in STEAM subjects and careers, particularly associated with plant science. The SADT approach, exemplified by the 3D plant module, effectively integrates science, art, design, and technology, enhancing student literacy in these fields, and providing students with essential 21st century competencies. The module's flexibility and experiential learning opportunities benefit students and educators, promoting interdisciplinary learning and interest in STEAM subjects and careers. This innovative approach is a valuable tool for educators, inspiring new ways of teaching and learning in STEAM education.

  4. Providing robust professional development opportunities for educators can present unique challenges, especially when activities occur abroad. In 2019, the NSF-ATE CREATE Energy Education Center took a group of renewable energy educators to Germany to study innovations in renewable energy and energy storage and to learn how these emerging technologies are incorporated into educational programming and workforce preparation. Learning activities conducted before, during and after travel ensured participant preparedness, academic rigor, constructive reflection and collaborative knowledge-building. This paper presents an analysis of accumulated participant data and presents recommendations for enhancing faculty learning when conducting international educator professional development programs.

Computing education is often confined to the context of formal education or after-school programs; however, there is a growing industry built around adult education, including workshops, coding intensives, online learning, and apprenticeship programs. Amidst these efforts, little research has explored the workplace as a site for novice adult learners to develop computing skills. In this experience report, we present an integrated training curriculum for adults at DataWorks, an organization that trains and employs novice adults from groups historically underrepresented in computing who seek to advance their career through on-the-job learning. ''Data Fellows'' are hired to complete client projects by providing data services for local organizations, nonprofits, and businesses. Training is integrated into employees' weekly responsibilities at DataWorks, and the curriculum consists of four modules: Microsoft Excel, Critical Data Literacy, Python Fundamentals, and Career Development. In this report, we reflect holistically on the evolution of the curriculum over three years. We distill our reflection into insights to inform other integrated training programs that aim to equip novice adults with computing skills in the workplace.
