Title: Anything But Race: Race-Evasion and Color-blindness in Preservice Teachers’ Responses to a Hypothetical Scenario.
This paper contributes to the literature challenging color-blind racism in teacher education by presenting findings from a study involving elementary preservice teachers responding to a hypothetical teaching scenario about race. Framed by theoretical perspectives on race-evasive teacher identity studies and color-blind racism, our findings reveal four typical response components—apologize, explain, solve, and appreciate. We describe each component and explain how all four can serve to evade race and hide/reproduce color-blind racism.  more » « less

  1. As critical race theorists would remind us, those most impacted have the greatest insight to create change. This paper applies a critical race theory framework to explore the leadership experiences of two African American and one Latinx American mathematics teacher educator and how they address issues of race, racism, and (in)justice in teacher professional development. Data analysis from semi-structured interviews, publicly available webinars and podcasts, and other published materials from the educators (eg. articles and books) reveal how they engaged teachers to attend to issues of race and racism by challenging persistent masternarratives about mathematics and mathematics ability; centering on counternarratives on the cultural identities and mathematical understanding of students of Color, and engaging in community-based pedagogies to promote coalitional resistance.

  2. Researchers across the engineering education research spectrum are investigating engineering and engineering education’s persistent racial homogeneity. Administrators and instructors alike talk about how they want their classrooms to be more racially diverse, and yet despite the herculean efforts of “minority in engineering” programs and the like, the needle has moved little. In this position paper, we describe a theoretical lens developed in critical race theory that has so far had little influence in engineering education to thinking about race although we consider it to have ample affordances. This lens is a theoretical framework developed by sociologist Eduardo Bonilla-Silva called “color-blind racism,” and comprises 4 frames: abstract liberalism, cultural racism, naturalization, and minimization of racism. Because the author team sees great value in understanding how cultural values and practices associated with a US experience of Whiteness have been built into U.S. engineering education, we offer here an articulation of these frames, and illustrate each frame through a curated set of stories drawn from our experiences as K-12 students, as undergraduate engineering students, and as engineering faculty at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). We note some limitations of the color-blind racism theory as we have applied it, offer some practical applications of the theory to consider, and issue a call to action for both engineering education researchers and engineering instructors.

Against a backdrop of calls for increased access and participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) in the United States have emerged as critical access points for Latina/o/x and other Students of Color. Federal grants can become important levers for building institutional capacity for broadening participation in STEM and transforming HSIs toward better serving Students of Color, specifically as it relates to curricula and pedagogy. In this study, we focus on the engineering faculty at an HSI who are participants in a National Science Foundation-funded, equity-focused professional development program. Operationalizing Bonilla-Silva’s color-evasive racial ideology framework, we use content analysis techniques to explore how engineering faculty discuss race and racism as part of the professional development experience. First, we find that engineering faculty largely rely on color-evasive racial frameworks (i.e., abstract liberalism, minimization of racism) when describing their motivations for participating in the program. Moreover, we find that engineering faculty responses depict a range of surprise and familiarity when reflecting on issues of race and racism. Finally, regardless of prior exposure to module concepts, at the end of the program, the majority of action projects reflect a recognition of race and racism as important.

  4. The authors take first steps in racializing Eccles and Wigfield’s situated expectancy value theory (SEVT). SEVT was initially developed to explain gender differences in motivation for and choice of STEM majors and careers but has been mostly silent on issues of race and racism in motivation research. Thus, the authors focus on Black American adolescents’ school experiences and reconceptualize three parts of the model: SEVT’s conceptualization of the cultural milieu, its portrayal of the socialization of motivation in school and at home, and aspects of individuals’ subjective task values, one of the key constructs in the model. To “break down silos” we connect SEVT to Critical Race Theory (CRT) by suggesting the cultural milieu “box” in the model be reimagined to include the impact of systemic racism and discrimination, power differentials, school segregation, and inequities in teacher quality and transience. Regarding racial socialization patterns within schools, we propose the notion of stage-culture-environment misfit, and evaluate teachers’ beliefs, biases, and cultural (in)competence. We also connect SEVT to empirical research on racial-ethnic socialization, specifically how the parents of Black children prepare them for discriminatory experiences and foster healthy racial identities. Turning to individuals’ subjective task values, we suggest expanding the cost aspect of task value to include racialized opportunity cost. We also extend intrinsic and attainment aspects of task value through integrating the emergent literature on Black joy. We conclude by suggesting critical pragmaticism as a possible broad framework in which motivation researchers from different perspectives can work together.

  5. Although the relationship between organizations and structural racism is well established, less is known about how racialization occurs within organizations. Overlooking how racial ideology is imbued in organizational logic obscures the role organizations play in reproducing structural racism. The prevalence of color-blind racial ideology further complicates the study of racialization, as most societies deny the existence of racism targeting people of color. In this article the author asks, How does color-blind racial ideology guide management decisions and the rationalization of racially unequal organizational practices? Using an extended case study method, the author examines sugar-ethanol mills in Brazil, where nonwhite workers are disproportionately exposed to hazardous risks. The author argues that the racialization of organizational practices occurs through a twofold process in which white elites use nonracial discourse to rationalize unequal outcomes and to reproduce the social conditions that steer nonwhite peoples into hazardous worksites. This article makes two contributions to the literature. First, through the discursive frames of cultural racism, naturalization, victimization, and politicized markets, the author shows how the allocation of resources and opportunities at the organizational level shapes and is shaped by racialized social systems. Second, by studying unequal relations in Brazil, the author elucidates the long-standing presence of color blindness in Iberian America while also tracing similarities and differences with color-blind racism in the United States.
