Title: Hubbard Brook field weather notes 1990-2019
Hubbard Brook weather notes (aka field notes) are daily weather observations by technicians at Hubbard Brook – a record that began in the mid-1970s, and continues today. Weekend weather notes are included, and are observations from their nearby homes in Thornton, Campton or Plymouth NH. These notes capture subtle details in weather that are not recorded by sensors at Hubbard Brook. These may include, but are not limited to, thunderstorms, frontal passages, named storms (i.e. Hurricanes, Tropical storms), fog, ground surface frost, precipitation type, and cloud types. In this data package, the weather notes from 1990-2019 have been scanned into annual pdf files, and are zipped into 5 year increments for download. Temperature and precipitation data are noted on the weather note sheets – these data are from hygrothermographs and precipitation recording rain gage at STA/RG22 (Hubbard Brook Headquarters), and beginning in 2014-15, from digital sensors. Note that temperature and precipitation from these handwritten sheets should not be used for data analysis. Temperature and precipitation finalized QA/QC products are available in digital format at the links below. The handwritten weather notes should be used as reference only. Freshly senesced leaf litter was collected during autumn in New Hampshire at the Bartlett Experimental Forest, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, and Jeffers Brook as part of the Multiple Elementation Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE) study. Leaf litter was collected in October of 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2016 at peak litterfall (i.e., mid-October) during a rain-free period. These leaf-litter samples were analyzed for nutrient concentrations for use in resorption analyses. These leaf litter samples correspond with green foliage samples collected in late July and early August of the same years: the green foliage EDI package can be found at the following citation: Hong, S.D., K.E. In this study, we analyzed territory sizes of seven migratory songbirds occupying a 10-hectare plot in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, USA over a 52-year period (1969-2021). All species varied in abundance over the duration of the study, some dramatically. Changes in territory sizes were inversely related to changes in abundance within the study plot despite differences in habitat preference, supporting the ideal free distribution. Territory sizes varied two-fold within a year across species. Results contribute to understanding how variation in territory size relates to 1) how habitat use changes with bird abundance and 2) the evolution of territory size. This dataset includes data, R code, and spatial files supporting this study. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES).   3. The forest inventory surveys in the bird area were initiated in 1981 and transects were made permanent in 1991 by Tom Siccama who created and designed this tree survey. The inventory is representative of approximately 2.5 km2 of mid elevation northern hardwood forest. The data set is particularly geared toward producing accurate mortality and recruitment estimates. It consists of a total inventory of all trees greater than or equal to 10 cm dbh within each of four 10 m wide belt transects. The parallel transects are placed approximately 200 m apart and 290° bearing in an east-west direction for 2200 to 2900 m. In 1991, each live stem greater than or equal to 10 cm dbh was tagged with a unique number. Tree vigor is assessed every two years and diameter is remeasured every ten years. Every two years, new tags are placed on stems that have grown into the 10 cm diameter class. A survey of smaller trees (greater than or equal to 2 to less than 10 cm dbh) was first taken in 1991 and is resurveyed every ten years. This dataset includes 1991 and subsequent samplings. Stomatal density and length were measured on leaves of sugar maple (Acer sacharrum Marsh.) and yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton.) trees in New Hampshire at the Bartlett Experimental Forest, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, and Jeffers Brook as part of the Multiple Elementation Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE) study. Leaves were collected in late July and early August in 2021 and 2022 from the tops of dominant and codominant trees using a shotgun. These measurements were made on 3 leaves from each tree.
