Title: Undergraduates Graph Interpretation and Scientific Paper Reading Shift from Novice- to Expert-like as a Result of Participation in a Summer Research Experience: A Case Study
Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) programs often introduce students to scientific research and STEM career possibilities. However, the program impact on students and their research skill development is not well understood. In a case study with 10 REU students, the authors used eye-tracking and self-report data to determine student strategies for reading scientific papers and interpreting graphs at the beginning and end of the program. The strategies of REU students and science experts were then compared. The REU students changed their strategies and performed more like experts at posttest. These findings indicate that, during the REU, students acquired expert-like strategies necessary to engage with scientific articles and extract key information from graphs.     Program comprehension is a vital skill in software development. This work investigates program comprehension by examining the eye movement of novice programmers as they gain programming experience over the duration of a Java course. Their eye movement behavior is compared to the eye movement of expert programmers. Eye movement studies of natural text show that word frequency and length influence eye movement duration and act as indicators of reading skill. The study uses an existing longitudinal eye tracking dataset with 20 novice and experienced readers of source code. The work investigates the acquisition of the effects of token frequency and token length in source code reading as an indication of program reading skill. The results show evidence of the frequency and length effects in reading source code and the acquisition of these effects by novices. These results are then leveraged in a machine learning model demonstrating how eye movement can be used to estimate programming proficiency and classify novices from experts with 72% accuracy.

  2. This evidence-based paper assesses strategies for Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) social program success. REU programs bring students from across the country to a university campus for the summer. These students learn how to conduct real research in their discipline by actually doing it, under the supervision of a faculty mentor. Many students who participate in REU programs remember these programs long after the program is complete. The REU experience of working with a faculty mentor on bona fide research is undoubtedly key to the educational and career planning benefits that students enjoy. The best REU experiences typically don’t happen by accident. They must be deliberately planned. Despite the importance of this component of REU programs, minimal literature related REU social programs exists. This paper considers what makes a strong REU social program.

This paper describes a preliminary analysis of a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site sponsored by the biomedical engineering department at a large public institution in the southwest United States. Data were compiled from the 2018 and 2019 cohorts of the program.Twenty-four participants from different undergraduate majors and universities were selected from competitive applicant pools, paired with a research mentor in the department, and tracked over each program’s duration. The participants were given a 37-question survey upon arrival and after the completion of the 10-week summer program (i.e., pre-test and post-test). These questions were broadly split among four categories to evaluate the participants’ comfort with (1) scientific writing, (2) scientific presentation, and students’ strength of association with the identities and careers of (3) researchers and (4) engineers. Students reported significant increases in their scientific writing skills and tended to identify more as researchers after the program. Conversely, students noted little change in their ability to present in a scientific setting and reported that their identity as engineers was not stronger. Separate focus groups with the visiting scholars and their graduate student mentors were conducted after the program to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the current iteration of the REU program. Possible improvements to the REU are proposed at the end of the paper.

    Undergraduate research experiences benefit students by immersing them in the work of scientists and often result in increased interest and commitment to careers in the sciences. Expanding access to Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) programs has the potential to engage more students in authentic research experiences earlier in their academic careers and grow and diversify the geoscience workforce. The Research Experience for Community College Students (RECCS) was one of the first National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded REU programs exclusively for 2-year college students. In this study, we describe findings from five years of the RECCS program and report on outcomes from 54 students. The study collected closed- and open-ended responses on post-program reflection surveys to analyze both student and mentor perspectives on their experience. Specifically, we focus on students’ self-reported growth in areas such as research skills, confidence in their ability to do research, and belonging in the field, as well as the mentors’ assessment of students’ work and areas of growth, and the impact of the program on students’ academic and career paths. In addition, RECCS alumni were surveyed annually to update data on their academic and career pursuits. Our data show that RECCS students learned scientific and professional skills throughout the program, developed a sense of identity as a scientist, and increased their interest in and excitement for graduate school after the program. Through this research experience, students gained confidence in their ability to “do” science and insight into whether this path is a good fit for them. This study contributes to an emerging body of data examining the impact of REU programs on community college students and encourages geoscience REU programs to welcome and support more community college students.

This Work-in-Progress paper investigates how students participating in a chemical engineering (ChE) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program conceptualize and make plans for research projects. The National Science Foundation has invested substantial financial resources in REU programs, which allow undergraduate students the opportunity to work with faculty in their labs and to conduct hands-on experiments. Prior research has shown that REU programs have an impact on students’ perceptions of their research skills, often measured through the Undergraduate Research Student Self-Assessment (URSSA) survey. However, few evaluation and research studies have gone beyond perception data to include direct measures of students’ gains from program participation. This work-in-progress describes efforts to evaluate the impact of an REU on students’ conceptualization and planning of research studies using a pre-post semi-structured interview process. The construct being investigated for this study is planning, which has been espoused as a critical step in the self-regulated learning (SRL) process (Winne & Perry, 2000; Zimmerman, 2008). Students who effectively self-regulate demonstrate higher levels of achievement and comprehension (Dignath & Büttner, 2008), and (arguably) work efficiency. Planning is also a critical step in large projects, such as research (Dvir & Lechler, 2004). Those who effectively plan their projects make consistent progress and are more likely to achieve project success (Dvir, Raz, & Shenhar, 2003). Prior REU research has been important in demonstrating some positive impacts of REU programs, but it is time to dig deeper into the potential benefits to REU participation. Many REU students are included in weekly lab meetings, and thus potentially take part in the planning process for research projects. Thus, the research question explored here is: How do REU participants conceptualize and make plans for research projects? The study was conducted in the ChE REU program at a large, mid-Atlantic research-oriented university during the summer of 2018. Sixteen students in the program participated in the study, which entailed them completing a planning task followed by a semi-structured interview at the start and the end of the REU program. During each session, participants read a case statement that asked them to outline a plan in writing for a research project from beginning to end. Using semi-structured interview procedures, their written outlines were then verbally described. The verbalizations were recorded and transcribed. Two members of the research team are currently analyzing the responses using an open coding process to gain familiarity with the transcripts. The data will be recoded based on the initial open coding and in line with a self-regulatory and project-management framework. Results: Coding is underway, preliminary results will be ready by the draft submission deadline. The methods employed in this study might prove fruitful in understanding the direct impact on students’ knowledge, rather than relying on their perceptions of gains. Future research could investigate differences in students’ research plans based on prior research experience, research intensity of students’ home institutions, and how their plans may be impacted by training.
