Title: Linear Extension of Anthracene via B←N Lewis Pair Formation: Effects on Optoelectronic Properties and Singlet O 2 Sensitization
Abstract

The functionalization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) via B←N Lewis pair formation offers an opportunity to judiciously fine‐tune the structural features and optoelectronic properties, to suit the demands of applications in organic electronic devices, bioimaging, and as sensitizers for singlet oxygen generation. We demonstrate that the N‐directed electrophilic borylation of 2,6‐di(pyrid‐2‐yl)anthracene offers access to linearly extended acene derivativesPy‐BR(R=Et, Ph, C6F5). In comparison to indeno‐fused 9,10‐diphenylanthracene, the formal “BN for CC” replacement inPy‐BRselectively lowers the LUMO, resulting in a much reduced HOMO–LUMO gap. An even more extended conjugated system with seven six‐membered rings in a row (Qu‐BEt) is obtained by borylation of 2,6‐di(quinolin‐8‐yl)anthracene. FluorinatedPy‐BPfshows particularly advantageous properties, including relatively lower‐lying HOMO and LUMO levels, strong yellow‐green fluorescence, and effective singlet oxygen sensitization, while resisting self‐sensitized conversion to its endoperoxide.

  2. ABSTRACT

Copper‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition polymerization (CuAACP) of AB2monomers demonstrated a chain‐growth mechanism without any external ligand because of the complexation ofin situformed triazole groups with Cu catalysts. In this study, we explored the use of various ligands that affected the polymerization kinetics to tune the polymers’ molecular weights and the degree of branching (DB). Eight ligands were studied, including polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether (PEG350,Mn= 350), tris(benzyltriazolylmethyl)amine (TBTA), 2,6‐bis(1‐undecyl‐1H‐benzo[d]imidazol‐2‐yl)pyridine (Py(DBim)2), 2,2′‐bipyridyl (bpy), 4,4′‐di‐n‐nonyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine (dNbpy),N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA),N,N,N′,N″,N″‐penta(n‐butyl)diethylenetriamine (PBuDETA), andN,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentabenzyldiethylenetriamine (PBnDETA). All ligands except PEG350exhibited stronger coordination with Cu(I) than the polytriazole polymer, which freed the Cu catalyst from polymers and resulted in dominant step‐growth polymerization with simultaneous chain‐growth feature. Meanwhile, the use of PEG350ligand retained the confined Cu in the polymer, demonstrating a chain‐growth mechanism, but lower polymer molecular weights as compared with the no‐external‐ligand polymerization. Results indicated that aliphatic substituent groups on ligands had little effect on the molecular weights and DB of the polymers, but rigid aromatic substituent groups decreased both values. By varying the ligand species and amounts, hyperbranched polymers with DB value ranging from 0.53 ([TBTA]0/[Cu]0= 5) to 0.98 ([PMDETA]0/[Cu]0= 2) have been achieved. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. 3. Abstract

We herein describe a new design principle to achieve B/N‐doped cyclophane where an electron‐donor block of three triarylamines (Ar3N) and an acceptor block of three triarylboranes (Ar3B) are spatially separated on opposite sides of the π‐extended ring system. DFT computations revealed the distinct electronic structure of theblock‐type macrocycleMC‐b‐B3N3with a greatly enhanced dipole moment and reduced HOMO–LUMO energy gap in comparison to its analogue with alternating B and N sites,MC‐alt‐B3N3. The unique arrangement of borane acceptor Ar3B and amine donor Ar3N components inMC‐b‐B3N3induces exceptionally strong intramolecular charge transfer in the excited state, which is reflected in a largely red‐shifted luminescence at 612 nm in solution. The respective linear open‐chain oligomerL‐b‐B3N3was also synthesized for comparison. Our new approach to donor–acceptor macrocycles offers important fundamental insights and opens up a new avenue to unique optoelectronic materials.

  5. Abstract

Little attention has been focused on diradical and zwitterionic photoperoxides formed from nitrosamine compounds. Here, an attempt is made to probe the electronic character of the nitrooxide intermediate formed in photochemical reactions with triplet oxygen (3O2). Theoretical studies have been conducted to screenpara‐substituted phenyl nitrosamines. In particular, we find that electron‐withdrawing substituents produce low‐lying triplet nitrooxide diradicals. A clear electronic dependence in theS0T1andS0S1energy gaps of nitrooxides was found using Hammett plots. Computed geometries show a twisted diradical triplet nitrooxide moiety, which contrasts to the nearly flat singlet zwitterionic ground state nitrooxide moiety; analyses of charges (natural bond order), molecular orbitals (HOMO/LUMO) and spin densities enable these assignments. Calculations predict the former triplet species is photogenerated initially from nitrosamine with O2. The conversion of the triplet nitrooxide diradical to the singlet ground state is an example where longer‐lived zwitterionic nitrooxide structures become possible. The reaction mechanism is consistent with a zwitterionic ground state nitrooxide playing an important role in the bimolecular oxygen‐transfer reaction with phosphine and phosphite trapping agents as has been observed experimentally.
