Title: Revision of the genus Niphta (Diptera, Thaumaleidae) Theischinger of South America, with descriptions of nine new species and a new immature morphotype
The Niphta Theischinger fauna of South America is revised to include 11 species, nine of which are described as new to science ( N. acus Pivar, sp. nov. , N. bifurcata Pivar & Moulton, sp. nov. , N. bispinosa Pivar & Sinclair, sp. nov. , N. brunnea Pivar, sp. nov. , N. courtneyi Pivar, sp. nov. , N. daniellae Pivar, sp. nov. , N. downesi Pivar, sp. nov. , N. eurydactyla Pivar, sp. nov. , N. mapuche Pivar, sp. nov. ). The genus Niphta is redefined, both previously described Chilean species are redescribed, N. halteralis (Edwards) and N. nudipennis (Edwards), and females are described or redescribed where possible. The first descriptions of the immature stages of South American Niphta are provided, which represent a new larval morphotype in Thaumaleidae, as larvae and pupae possess ventral adhesive structures. Furthermore, these larvae were collected from vegetation rather than rocky substrates. Illustrations and micrographs are provided for all species, and scanning electron microscopy images are included for select immatures. A key to species, distribution maps, and discussions regarding phylogenetic affinities and habitat are also included.  more » « less

    The Austrothaumalea fauna of South America is revised and includes five species: A. apicalis Edwards, A. chilensis Edwards, A. fredericki Pivar sp. nov., A. setipennis Edwards stat. rev. and A. spatulata Schmid. The genus Oterere McLellan syn. nov. is considered a new junior synonym of Austrothaumalea Tonnoir on the basis of several shared apomorphic characters. All previously described South American species are redescribed, including females where possible. Illustrations and micrographs of all species are provided, as well as distribution maps, keys to genera and species, and discussions regarding phylogenetic affinities.

    The leafhopper genus Homa Distant is revised. Four new species, H. osificata Xu, Dietrich & Qin sp. nov., H. oretinia Xu, Dietrich & Qin sp. nov., H. asilata Xu, Dietrich & Qin sp. nov., and H. algulata Xu, Dietrich & Qin sp. nov., are described from Thailand. H. haematoptilus (Kirkaldy) is redescribed based on specimens from the Oriental Region. All included species are illustrated and a key is provided to separate species for which males are known.

    Three new Neotropical athysanine (Deltocephalinae) leafhopper genera, Spaltumtettix Pinedo-Escatel & Dietrich gen. nov., Pseudonapo Pinedo-Escatel & Dietrich gen. nov., and Goiattus Pinedo-Escatel gen. nov., and 4 new species, S. coloradus Pinedo-Escatel & Dietrich sp. nov. (Peru), P. waorani Pinedo-Escatel & Dietrich sp. nov. (Ecuador), P. huanucensis Pinedo-Escatel & Dietrich sp. nov. (Peru), and G. reyesi Pinedo-Escatel sp. nov. (Brazil), are described and illustrated. In addition, the genera Zabrosa Oman, Napo Linnavuori & DeLong, Pseudalaca Linnavuori and Brazosa Oman are revised and redescribed. Six new species are described in Brazosa: B. campinacu Pinedo-Escatel & Dietrich sp. nov. (Brazil), B. espatula Pinedo-Escatel & Dietrich sp. nov. (Brazil), B. encrustada Pinedo-Escatel & Dietrich sp. nov. (Brazil), B. mildredireanae Pinedo-Escatel sp. nov. (Peru), B. negra Pinedo-Escatel & Dietrich sp. nov. (Peru and Bolivia) and B. beni Pinedo-Escatel & Dietrich sp. nov. (Bolivia). Brazosa caesarea Linnavuori & Heller comb. nov. is transferred to Spaltumtettix. The South American species Z. aquareza Linnavuori & DeLong syn. nov. is proposed as junior synonym of Z. unicampi Menezes. Keys to species of each genus are provided. Unusual aspects of the morphology of these genera are discussed and a comparative table is provided.

    Generic characteristics of the leafhopper genus Kusala Dworakowska are revised, and a new subgenus Scodela is established. A species checklist of the Kusala is provided and three new species are added: Kusala (Kusala) viraktamathi, K. (Scodela) directa and K. (S.) sinuata spp. nov.. The related genus Diomma Motschulsky is also redescribed and a new species is described: Diomma (Diomma) sangzhiensis sp. nov..

    Six new species of Stenometopiini are described: Stirellus paracatalinus sp. nov. from Mexico, Stirellus lesioensis sp. nov. from Republic of Congo, Stirellus paralesioensis sp. nov. from South Africa, Stirellus kitwensis sp. nov. from Zambia, Stirellus madagascarensis sp. nov. from Madagascar, and Stirellus petfordensis sp. nov. from Australia. Ten species are redescribed: Kinonia elongata Ball, Stirellus catalinus (Beamer & Tuthill), Stirellus labiatus (Gillette), Stirellus mexicanus (Osborn & Ball), Stirellus picinus (Berg), Stirellus laetus (Melichar), Stirellus multipunctatus Duan, Webb & Zhang, Stirellus neospeciosus Duan, Webb & Zhang, Stirellus rubrolineatus (Distant), and Stirellus sagittarius (Naudé). Kinonia elongata Ball, S. catalinus (Beamer & Tuthill) and S. labiatus (Gillette), all described from the Southwestern USA, are recorded from Mexico for the first time. Stirellus picinus (Berg) is recorded from the Virgin Islands (Guana Island) for the first time. Stirellus laetus (Melichar), S. multipunctatus Duan, Webb & Zhang, S. neospeciosus Duan, Webb & Zhang, and S. rubrolineatus (Distant) are recorded from Thailand for the first time.
