This article presents a mathematical modeling activity for students related to the process of memorization in which students collect their own data to drive their model development, parameterization, and validation. Engaging in the data collection gives them insight to critique and evaluate various models. This task is a low-floor high ceiling problem that offers both a relatable context and a window to quantitative approaches in cognitive science. Experimental results of students’ participation in this activity are discussed. This article also includes pedagogical recommendations with a focus on fostering equitable teaching practices and a detailed analysis of the situation comprised of several mathematical approaches to model the memorization process that highlight the richness of the problem. Instructors can adapt and implement this modeling exploration for use in various undergraduate courses, from introductory to advanced, depending on the emphasis of the lesson.

Recent international reform movements call for attention on modeling in mathematics classrooms. However, definitions and enactment principles are unclear in policy documents. In this case study, we investigated United States high-school mathematics teachers’ experiences in a professional development program focused on modeling and its enactment in schools. Our findings share teachers’ experiences around their discovery of different conceptualizations, appreciations, and conflicts as they envisioned incorporating modeling into classrooms. These experiences show how professional development can be designed to engage teachers with forms of modeling, and that those experiences can inspire them to consider modeling as an imperative feature of a mathematics program.more » « less

null (Ed.)In studying visual perception, we seek to develop models of processing that accurately predict perceptual judgments. Much of this work is focused on judgments of discrimination, and there is a large literature concerning models of visual discrimination. There are, however, non-threshold visual judgments, such as judgments of the magnitude of differences between visual stimuli, that provide a means to bridge the gap between threshold and appearance. We describe two such models of suprathreshold judgments, maximum likelihood difference scaling and maximum likelihood conjoint measurement, and review recent literature that has exploited them.more » « less
