Title: Linking metaphor comprehension with analogical reasoning: Evidence from typical development and autism spectrum disorder
Abstract

We examined the relationship between metaphor comprehension and verbal analogical reasoning in young adults who were either typically developing (TD) or diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The ASD sample was highly educated and high in verbal ability, and closely matched to a subset of TD participants on age, gender, educational background, and verbal ability. Additional TD participants with a broader range of abilities were also tested. Each participant solved sets of verbal analogies and metaphors in verification formats, allowing measurement of both accuracy and reaction times. Measures of individual differences in vocabulary, verbal working memory, and autistic traits were also obtained. Accuracy for both the verbal analogy and the metaphor task was very similar across the ASD and matched TD groups. However, reaction times on both tasks were longer for the ASD group. Additionally, stronger correlations between verbal analogical reasoning and working memory capacity in the ASD group indicated that processing verbal analogies was more effortful for them. In the case of both groups, accuracy on the metaphor and analogy tasks was correlated. A mediation analysis revealed that after controlling for working memory capacity, the inter‐task correlation could be accounted for by the mediating variable of vocabulary knowledge, suggesting that the primary common mechanisms linking the two tasks involve language skills.

    Impairments related to figurative language understanding have been considered to be one of the diagnostic and defining features of autism. Metaphor comprehension and production in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as compared to typically developing (TD) individuals have been investigated for around thirty years, generally showing an overall advantage for TD groups. We present a preregistered systematic review and meta-analysis including a total of 15 studies that fulfilled our set of inclusion criteria (notably, ASD and TD groups matched in chronological age and verbal- or full-scale IQ). Along with accuracy, we also analyzed group differences in reaction time in the studies that reported them. The results revealed a medium-to-large group difference favoring TD over ASD groups based on accuracy measures, as well as a similar overall advantage for TD groups based on reaction times. There was reliable heterogeneity in effect sizes for group differences in accuracy, which was mostly explained by the effect of verbal intelligence, with differences in metaphor processing being smaller for participants with better verbal skills. Some of the variation in effect sizes may also be attributed to differences in types of metaphor processing tasks. We also evaluated the quality of the studies included in the meta-analysis, and the evidence relating to the potential presence of publication bias.

  2. Objective We live in an increasingly multicultural society which is reflected in the student population. In the community college (CC) setting, students from underrepresented groups are over-represented in remedial math courses and are less likely to complete the sequence. The extant literature suggests higher levels of acculturation, both cultural adoption and cultural maintenance, support academic success. Working memory (WM) is a well-known domain-general predictor of mathematical development and has been shown to relate to math achievement r = .38. Given this moderate relation, additional predictors of math achievement warrant investigation. In the present study, we investigated the potential moderational role of acculturation (cultural adoption and maintenance), on the WM-math relation in a diverse group of CC students (n = 94). Math was assessed both by a standardized measure of math computation and a measure of “everyday math” word problems including medical and financial management. We expected that higher levels of acculturation (adoption and maintenance) would decreasing WM load (via cognitive load) and aid math performance. At higher levels of acculturation, the WM-math relation was hypothesized approximate meta analytic findings, r = .38. Alternatively, at low levels of acculturation, the WM-math correlation was anticipated to be attenuated due to the added variability in culture and the negative impact low acculturation levels have on WM by increasing cognitive load. Participants and Methods A diverse sample of CC students (ages 18-25) who were enrolled in a math course were included. Participants completed an online survey covering demographic and cultural domains, then completed an in-person cognitive testing session to assess language abilities, WM, and math ability. Bivariate correlations and regression based moderation analyses were used. Post-hoc analyses were conducted to assess for three-way interactions with baseline verbal or math abilities. Results WM-math correlations averaged r = .38. Acculturation did not significantly relate to either outcome variable. Neither cultural adoption (computations: F=1.68, p =.199; word problems: F=.42, p =.521 ) nor cultural maintenance (computations: F=.83, p = .364; word problems: F=.36, p = .550) moderated the WM-math relations. Post-hoc analyses revealed significant three-way interactions between cultural adoption and math computation across different levels of vocabulary (F=4.66, p = .034) and math abilities (F= 6.16 p = .015). Conclusion The hypothesized moderational role of acculturation on the WM-math relation was not supported. Post-hoc analyses, however, revealed that the cultural adoption-math relationship varied across different levels of vocabulary and math abilities, although not in the direction anticipated. Finding suggest complex relationships between the WM, acculturation, and math such that acculturation does impact math performance when either vocabulary or math abilities are strong. At low levels of math or vocabulary, students’ WM may already be overtaxed, such that higher acculturation levels cannot benefit the student. Whereas when baseline abilities are average/high, increased cultural adoption can benefit the student by potentially decreasing cognitive load and freeing additional WM capacity which can be applied to the task. Findings could identify patterns of students at risk for math failure and inform future intervention/policy development to address their needs and support success.

    White matter tracts are the data cables in the brain that efficiently transfer information, and damage to these tracts could be the cause for the abnormal behaviors that are associated with autism. We found that two long‐range tracts (the anterior thalamic radiation and the cingulum) were both impaired in autism but were not directly related to the impairments in behavior. This suggests that the abnormal tracts and behavior are the effects of another underlying mechanism.

    Advances in artificial intelligence have raised a basic question about human intelligence: Is human reasoning best emulated by applying task‐specific knowledge acquired from a wealth of prior experience, or is it based on the domain‐general manipulation and comparison of mental representations? We address this question for the case of visual analogical reasoning. Using realistic images of familiar three‐dimensional objects (cars and their parts), we systematically manipulated viewpoints, part relations, and entity properties in visual analogy problems. We compared human performance to that of two recent deep learning models (Siamese Network and Relation Network) that were directly trained to solve these problems and to apply their task‐specific knowledge to analogical reasoning. We also developed a new model using part‐based comparison (PCM) by applying a domain‐general mapping procedure to learned representations of cars and their component parts. Across four‐term analogies (Experiment 1) and open‐ended analogies (Experiment 2), the domain‐general PCM model, but not the task‐specific deep learning models, generated performance similar in key aspects to that of human reasoners. These findings provide evidence that human‐like analogical reasoning is unlikely to be achieved by applying deep learning with big data to a specific type of analogy problem. Rather, humans do (and machines might) achieve analogical reasoning by learning representations that encode structural information useful for multiple tasks, coupled with efficient computation of relational similarity.

    Metaphors are a common way to express creative language, yet the cognitive basis of figurative language production remains poorly understood. Previous studies found that higher creative individuals can better comprehend novel metaphors, potentially due to a more flexible semantic memory network structure conducive to remote conceptual combination. The present study extends this domain to creative metaphor production and examined whether the ability to produce creative metaphors is related to variation in the structure of semantic memory. Participants completed a creative metaphor production task and two verbal fluency tasks. They were divided into two equal groups based on their creative metaphor production score. The semantic networks of these two groups were estimated and analyzed based on their verbal fluency responses using a computational network science approach. Results revealed that the semantic networks of high-metaphor producing individuals were more flexible, clustered, and less rigid than that of the low-metaphor producing individuals. Importantly, these results replicated across both semantic categories. The findings provide the first evidence that a flexible, clustered, and less rigid semantic memory structure relates to people’s ability to produce figurative language, extending the growing literature on the role of semantic networks in creativity to the domain of metaphor production.
