Title: Culturally Responsive Leadership Development for HBCU STEM Faculty
This year-long leadership development program was designed to enhance the cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions of leadership self-efficacy of HBCU STEM leaders to broaden the participation of African American undergraduates in STEM. Learning outcomes guided the development of curricular resources including on-line learning, multi-day residencies, individual leadership assessment, and an action learning project. Mixed-method evaluation showed significant gains on all learning outcomes, with the highest post-test ratings in application of leadership skills, leading faculty in STEM teaching strategies, leading instructional innovation, developing programs for broadening participation in STEM, and increasing campus awareness of national challenges related to STEM.  more » « less

    Coaching is an important and valuable component of leadership development programs and training for emerging leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Based on the results from individual and focus group interviews of nine participants, we found that coaching is valuable for the leadership growth of emerging STEM leaders from nine historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The participants described the outcomes from coaching as a component of value-based leadership that can inspire and motivate professional growth. They emphasized overwhelmingly that coaches were valuable in improving individual and institutional outcomes through effective leadership. Other themes that emerged from the study include coaching through modeling, inspirational motivation, intentional reflection, resourcefulness, authentic trust, and success-orientation. Results have practical and leadership implications for leadership training to broaden participation in STEM.

    Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are noted for their success in broadening participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). A multiple case study approach was used to identify institutional and leadership characteristics that may drive the success of small HBCUs in broadening participation in STEM. Data on 15 HBCUs were obtained from websites, including institutional websites, and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Factors common to many institutions included external STEM education funding, STEM-/research-focused missions, commitment of leaders to STEM education, partnerships to support STEM education, STEM faculty professional development, and STEM student support strategies. These characteristics also predicted the percentage of STEM graduates. Implications for future research include illuminating the pathways by which institutional and leadership factors influence student outcomes.

Abstract Learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects starting at a young age helps prepare students for a variety of careers both inside and outside of the sciences. Yet, addressing integrated STEM in an elementary school setting can be challenging. Teacher leadership is one way to address this challenge. The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive case study is to understand how participation in the NebraskaSTEM Noyce Master Teaching Fellowship project impacted elementary STEM teacher leadership identities. Our findings suggest participation in the project contributed to different layers of teacher leadership identity (as a STEM learner, as a STEM teacher, and as a STEM teacher leader). These findings suggest professional development should be tailored to address empowering specific layers of STEM teacher leaders' professional identity. Other teacher leadership development projects may want to consider how to structure their projects to empower teachers based on the identities and experiences of those teachers.

  4. The term leadership has been dissected, analyzed and even quantified over numerous years. Leadership in STEM has also been extensively researched. Its results are used to educate and guide decision and to enact policies. However, despite the abundance of literature available on leadership and STEM in general, research falls short when it comes to examining leadership characteristics and its relationship to broadening participation at institutions of higher education, specifically Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Of special interest is the growing awareness that HBCUs have been producing high percentages of STEM graduates for many years. CASL, the Center for Advancement of STEM Leadership, aims to discover the leadership styles, characteristics and practices that may be influencing the large production of STEM graduates from HBCUs and contribute to the general body of knowledge on leadership. Semi-structured interviews served as the source of data from HBCU leaders’ perspectives. The results of this analysis will assist with increasing the general population’s awareness and knowledge of the impact of HBCUs’ leadership on broadening participation in STEM. The results also inform leaders of educational institutions across the nation regarding the benefits of exploring, or implementing, uncovered leadership styles and practices to broaden participation in STEM.

  5. Abstract Teacher leaders influence their peers by introducing innovative instructional methods and enhancing teaching quality. They have proven invaluable to school principals as they prioritize comprehensive teacher development, bolster teacher effectiveness, and promote teacher retention. Despite their importance, little to no research—prior to the present study—has shed light on the development of teacher leaders and the evolution of their leadership identity. While science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teacher leaders offer a potential remedy for attrition in public schools, a substantial gap exists in understanding how a STEM teacher's self‐efficacy, values, and agency contribute to their transformation into effective STEM teacher leaders, especially in urban‐like learning environments. The present study focuses on STEM teacher leadership identity development and the challenges encountered. It ascertains the interplay between urban‐like learning environments, self‐efficacy, agency, the teacher leader's role within the school, and values in forecasting STEM teacher leadership identity. This research involved 100 in‐service PreK‐12 public school STEM teacher leaders. It yielded significant, positive, and meaningful relations between urban‐like learning environments, self‐efficacy/agency, teacher leader role, values, and STEM teacher leadership identity. These findings can enhance various facets of PreK‐12 STEM education, including educational programming, teacher training, and cultivating STEM teacher leadership.
