Title: Anomalous Thermal Characteristics of Poly(ionic liquids) Derived from 1-Butyl-2,3-dimethyl-4-vinylimidazolium Salts
The synthesis of 1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl-4-vinylimidazolium triflate, its polymerization, and ion exchange to yield a trio of 1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl-4-vinylimidazolium polymers is described. Irrespective of the nature of the anion, substitution at the 2-position of the imidazolium moiety substantially increases the distance between the anion and cation. The methyl substituent at the 2-position also served to expose the importance of H-bonding for the attractive potential between imidazolium moiety and anions in polymers without a methyl group at the 2-position. The thermal characteristics of poly(1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl-4-vinylimidazolium) salts and corresponding poly(1-ethyl-3-methyl-4-vinylimidazolium) salts were evaluated. While the mid-point glass transition temperatures, Tg-mid, for 1-ethyl-3-methyl-4-vinylimidazolium polymers with CF3SO3−, (CF3SO2)2N− and PF6− counterions, were 153 °C, 88 °C and 200 °C, respectively, the Tg-mid values for 1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl-4vinylimidazolium polymers with corresponding counter-ions were tightly clustered at 98 °C, 99 °C and 84 °C, respectively. This dramatically reduced influence of the anion type on the glass transition temperature was attributed to the increased distance between the center of the anions and cations in the 1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl-4-vinylimidazolium polymer set, and minimal H-bonding interactions between the respective anions and the 1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl-4-vinylimidazolium moiety. It is believed that this is the first observation of substantial independence of the glass transition of an ionic polymer on the nature of its counterion.  more » « less

This article reports a study of the effects of temperature on chaotropic anion (CA)-induced star-globule shape transitions in acidic water of three-arm star bottlebrushes composed of heterografted poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and either poly(2-( N , N -dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) or poly(2-( N , N -diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) (the brushes denoted as SMB-11 and -22, respectively). The brush polymers were synthesized by grafting alkyne-end-functionalized PEO and PDMAEMA or PDEAEMA onto an azide-bearing three-arm star backbone polymer using the copper( i )-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition reaction. Six anions were studied for their effects on the conformations of SMB-11 and -22 in acidic water: super CAs [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3− and [Fe(CN)6] 4− , moderate CAs PF 6 − and ClO 4 − , weak CA I − , and for comparison, kosmotropic anion SO 4 2− . At 25 °C, the addition of super and moderate CAs induced shape transitions of SMB-11 and -22 in pH 4.50 water from a starlike to a collapsed globular state stabilized by PEO side chains, which was driven by the ion pairing of protonated tertiary amine groups with CAs and the chaotropic effect. The shape changes occurred at much lower salt concentrations for super CAs than moderate CAs. Upon heating from near room temperature to 70 °C, the super CA-collapsed brushes remained in the globular state, whereas the moderate CA-collapsed brushes underwent reversible globule-to-star shape transitions. The transition temperature increased with increasing salt concentration and was found to be higher for SMB-22 at the same salt concentration, presumably caused by the chaotropic effect. In contrast, I − and SO 4 2− had small effects on the conformations of SMB-11 and -22 at 25 °C in the studied salt concentration range, and only small and gradual size variations were observed upon heating to 70 °C. The results reported here may have potential uses in the design of stimuli-responsive systems for substance encapsulation and release.

Imidazolium-based cations and the hexafluorophosphate anion are among the most commonly used ionic liquids (ILs). Yet, the nature and strength of the intrinsic cation–anion interactions, and how they influence the macroscopic properties of these ILs are still not well understood. Threshold collision-induced dissociation is utilized to determine the bond dissociation energies (BDEs) of the 2 : 1 clusters of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations and the hexafluorophosphate anion, [2C n mim:PF 6 ] + . The cation, [C n mim] + , is varied across the series, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium [C 2 mim] + , 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium [C 4 mim] + , 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium [C 6 mim] + , 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium [C 8 mim] + , to examine the structural and energetic effects of the size of the 1-alkyl substituent of the cation on the binding to [PF 6 ] − . Complementary electronic structure methods are employed for the [C n mim] + cations, (C n mim:PF 6 ) ion pairs, and [2C n mim:PF 6 ] + clusters to elucidate details of the cation–anion interactions and their impact on structure and energetics. Multiple levels of theory are benchmarked with the measured BDEs including B3LYP, B3LYP-GD3BJ, and M06-2X each with the 6-311+G(d,p) basis set for geometry optimizations and frequency analyses and the 6-311+G(2d,2p) basis set for energetic determinations. The modest structural variation among the [C n mim] + cations produces only minor structural changes and variation in the measured BDEs of the [2C n mim:PF 6 ] + clusters. Present results are compared to those previously reported for the analogous 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate IL clusters to compare the effects of these anions on the nature and strength of the intrinsic binding interactions.

  3. Abstract

Insertion of CO2into the polyacrylate backbone, forming poly(carbonate) analogues, provides an environmentally friendly and biocompatible alternative. The synthesis of five poly(carbonate) analogues of poly(methyl acrylate), poly(ethyl acrylate), and poly(butyl acrylate) is described. The polymers are prepared using the salen cobalt(III) complex catalyzed copolymerization of CO2and a derivatized oxirane. All the carbonate analogues possess higher glass‐transition temperatures (Tg=32 to −5 °C) than alkyl acrylates (Tg=10 to −50 °C), however, the carbonate analogues (Td≈230 °C) undergo thermal decomposition at lower temperatures than their acrylate counterparts (Td≈380 °C). The poly(alkyl carbonates) exhibit compositional‐dependent adhesivity. The poly(carbonate) analogues degrade into glycerol, alcohol, and CO2in a time‐ and pH‐dependent manner with the rate of degradation accelerated at higher pH conditions, in contrast to poly(acrylate)s.

  4. Herein, we present the direct modification of glucose, an abundant and inexpensive sugar molecule, to produce new sustainable and functional polymers. Glucose-6-acrylate-1,2,3,4-tetraacetate (GATA) has been synthesized and shown to provide a useful glassy component for developing an innovative family of elastomeric and adhesive materials. A series of diblock and triblock copolymers of GATA and n -butyl acrylate (n-BA) were created via Reversible Addition–Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Initially, poly(GATA)- b -poly(n-BA) copolymers were prepared using 4-cyano-4-[(ethylsulfanylthiocarbonyl)sulfanyl] pentanoic acid (CEP) as a chain transfer agent (CTA). These diblock copolymers demonstrated decomposition temperatures of 275 °C or greater and two glass transition temperatures ( T g ) around −45 °C and 100 °C corresponding to the PnBA and PGATA domains, respectively, as measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Triblock copolymers of GATA and n-BA, with moderate dispersities ( Đ = 1.15–1.29), were successfully synthesized when S , S -dibenzyl trithiocarbonate (DTC) was employed as the CTA. Poly(GATA)- b -poly(nBA)- b -poly(GATA) copolymers with 14–58 wt% GATA were prepared and demonstrated excellent thermomechanical properties ( T d ≥ 279 °C). Two well-separated glass transitions near the values for homopolymers of n-BA and GATA (∼−45 °C and ∼100 °C, respectively) were measured by DSC. The triblock with 14% GATA exhibited peel adhesion of 2.31 N cm −1 (when mixed with 30 wt% tackifier) that is superior to many commercial pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs). Use of 3,5-bis(2-dodecylthiocarbonothioylthio-1oxopropoxy)benzoic acid (BTCBA) as the CTA provided a more efficient route to copolymerize GATA and n-BA. Using BTCBA, poly(GATA)- b -poly(nBA)- b -poly(GATA) triblock copolymers containing 12–25 wt% GATA, with very narrow molar mass distributions ( Đ ≤ 1.08), were prepared. The latter series of triblock copolymers showed excellent thermal stability with T d ≥ 275 °C. Only the T g for the PnBA block was observed by DSC (∼−45 °C), however, phase-separation was confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) for all of these triblock copolymers. The mechanical behavior of the polymers was investigated by tensile experiments and the triblock with 25% GATA content demonstrated moderate elastomeric properties, 573 kPa stress at break and 171% elongation. This study introduces a new family of glucose-based ABA-type copolymers and demonstrates functionality of a glucose-based feedstock for developing green polymeric materials.

  5. We report a green solvent-to-polymer upgrading transformation of chemicals of the lactic acid portfolio into water-soluble lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-type acrylic polymers. Aqueous Cu(0)-mediated living radical polymerization (SET-LRP) was utilized for the rapid synthesis of N -substituted lactamide-type homo and random acrylic copolymers under mild conditions. A particularly unique aspect of this work is that the water-soluble monomers and the SET-LRP initiator used to produce the corresponding polymers were synthesized from biorenewable and non-toxic solvents, namely natural ethyl lactate and BASF's Agnique® AMD 3L ( N , N -dimethyl lactamide, DML). The pre-disproportionation of Cu( i )Br in the presence of tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me 6 TREN) in water generated nascent Cu(0) and Cu( ii ) complexes that facilitated the fast polymerization of N -tetrahydrofurfuryl lactamide and N , N -dimethyl lactamide acrylate monomers (THFLA and DMLA, respectively) up to near-quantitative conversion with excellent control over molecular weight (5000 < M n < 83 000) and dispersity (1.05 < Đ < 1.16). Interestingly, poly(THFLA) showed a degree of polymerization and concentration dependent LCST behavior, which can be fine-tuned ( T cp = 12–62 °C) through random copolymerization with the more hydrophilic DMLA monomer. Finally, covalent cross-linking of these polymers resulted in a new family of thermo-responsive hydrogels with excellent biocompatibility and tunable swelling and LCST transition. These illustrate the versatility of these neoteric green polymers in the preparation of smart and biocompatible soft materials.
