Title: The impact of universal recycling on the evolution of economic diversity
Based on von Neumann’s model of an economy characterized by processes and goods, we add to that model a component representing capital equipment. We assume that the need for capital equipment by any process is proportional to the rate at which that process is running, and therefore an increase in rate requires that capital equipment be purchased, whereas a decrease in rate allows capital equipment to be sold. We thereby construct a continuous-time dynamical model, which we use to investigate the evolution of economic diversity under two price equilibrium scenarios: the first with non-negative prices and non-positive excess demands; the second with enforced market clearing and with prices allowed to be negative. The second scenario represents an economy in which recycling is required, so that excess supply cannot be discarded. We prove that at any time during the progression of the model economy, the solution to each of the two price equilibrium problems exists, and that non-uniqueness of the solution, if any, does not affect the development of the model economy. We compare matched model economies under the two scenarios by simulating their respective evolutions. In each case, the model economy experiences a process of selection and matures to a state of balanced growth, with a higher growth rate when excess supply is discarded, but with greater economic diversity with enforced recycling. The robustness of these qualitative results is demonstrated by repeated trials of simulations on matched pairs of model economies with different randomly chosen parameters.  more » « less

    In this paper we provide a statement of dynamic spatial price equilibrium (DSPE) in continuous time as a basis for modeling freight flows in a network economy. The model presented describes a spatial price equilibrium due to its reliance on the notion that freight movements occur in response to differences between the local and distant prices of goods for which there is excess demand; moreover, local and distant delivered prices are equated at equilibrium. We propose and analyze a differential variational inequality (DVI) associated with dynamic spatial price equilibrium to study the Nash-like aggregate game at the heart of DSPE using the calculus of variations and optimal control theory. Our formulation explicitly considers inventory and the time lag between shipping and demand fulfillment. We stress that such a time lag cannot be readily accommodated in a discrete-time formulation. We provide an in-depth analysis of the DVI’s necessary conditions that reveals the dynamic user equilibrium nature of freight flows obtained from the DVI, alongside the role played by freight transport in maintaining equilibrium commodity prices and the delivered-price-equals-local-price property of spatial price equilibrium. By intent, our contribution is wholly theoretical in nature, focusing on a mathematical statement of the defining equations and inequalities for dynamic spatial price equilibrium (DSPE), while also showing there is an associated differential variational inequality (DVI), any solution of which is a DSPE. The model of spatial price equilibrium we present integrates the theory of spatial price equilibrium in a dynamic setting with the path delay operator notion used in the theory of dynamic user equilibrium.

  2. For chemical recycling of plastic wastes to be viable, chemical products generated in recycling need to find markets. A network model of the U.S. chemical manufacturing industry was used to assess at what cost points, and the extent to which, chemical products from thermal pyrolysis of polyethylene might find markets in the current U.S. chemical manufacturing industry. Network modeling determined the cost points at which the simulated industry network utilized the thermal pyrolysis products and which processes were displaced by the supply of recycled materials. The characteristic feature of the simulations is the large number of processes in the chemical manufacturing network that are impacted by the availability of a relatively small number of products from polyethylene recycling. In the case of polyethylene recycling, the capital cost requirements for expanding capacity to effectively utilize the recycled materials is greater than the capital required for the pyrolysis process. This suggests that identifying scenarios where recycled materials can be utilized in processes that have excess capacity will be a critical consideration in techno-economic analyses of recycling plastics.

  3. Sustainable development requires jointly achieving economic development to raise standards of living and environmental sustainability to secure these gains for the long run. Here, we develop a local-to-global, and global-to-local, earth-economy model that integrates the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP)-computable general equilibrium model of the economy with the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model of fine-scale, spatially explicit ecosystem services. The integrated model, GTAP–InVEST, jointly determines land use, environmental conditions, ecosystem services, market prices, supply and demand across economic sectors, trade across regions, and aggregate performance metrics like GDP. We use the integrated model to analyze the contribution of investing in nature for economic prosperity, accounting for the impact of four important ecosystem services (pollination, timber provision, marine fisheries, and carbon sequestration). We show that investments in nature result in large improvements relative to a business-as-usual path, accruing annual gains of $100 to $350 billion (2014 USD) with the largest percentage gains in the lowest-income countries. Our estimates include only a small subset of ecosystem services and could be far higher with inclusion of more ecosystem services, incorporation of ecological tipping points, and reduction in substitutability that limits economic adjustments to declines in natural capital. Our analysis highlights the need for improved environmental–economic modeling and the vital importance of integrating environmental information firmly into economic analysis and policy. The benefits of doing so are potentially very large, with the greatest percentage benefits accruing to inhabitants of the poorest countries.

  4. Tâtonnement is a simple, intuitive market process where prices are iteratively adjusted based on the difference between demand and supply. Many variants under different market assumptions have been studied and shown to converge to a market equilibrium, in some cases at a fast rate. However, the classical case of linear Fisher markets have long eluded the analyses, and it remains unclear whether tâtonnement converges in this case. We show that, for a sufficiently small stepsize, the prices given by the tâtonnement process are guaranteed to converge to equilibrium prices, up to a small approximation radius that depends on the stepsize. To achieve this, we consider the dual Eisenberg-Gale convex program in the price space, view tâtonnement as subgradient descent on this convex program, and utilize novel last-iterate convergence results for subgradient descent under error bound conditions. In doing so, we show that the convex program satisfies a particular error bound condition, the quadratic growth condition, and that the price sequence generated by tâtonnement is bounded above and away from zero. We also show that a similar convergence result holds for tâtonnement in quasi-linear Fisher markets. Numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate that the theoretical linear convergence aligns with empirical observations.

    The stock market is as volatile as it is unpredictable, the unstable nature of the stock market results in fluctuations in stock prices and invariably, the market performance of stocks. Understanding the underlying factors that contribute to the volatility of the stock market, which has its consequences on stock prices, has become important to researchers and investors alike. Some of the methods that researchers have used in the past as a gauge for understanding market performance include analyzing economic conditions, understanding company performance, following geopolitical events and market trends. To contribute to the vast research field of stock price predictions and the challenge of understanding stock price fluctuations, this study will aim to find a relationship between human sentiments on the social media platform, Reddit, and the S&P 500 stock index. In this study, we will analyze posts from five subreddits that typically discuss the stock market and stock price fluctuations. This will form the first part of our dataset. Historical stock prices for the S&P 500 index will be obtained from Yahoo Finance. This will form our final dataset. Using VADER (Valence aware dictionary and sentiment reasoner), we will extract the sentiments within the five subreddits and categorize them into positive and negative sentiments. The historical stock prices from Yahoo finance will be matched with the aggregate sentiments for each day and this data passed through the LSTM model for training. Our findings provide strong evidence of social media’s impact on stock price predictions.
