Title: Helical Chiral N‐Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands in Enantioselective Gold Catalysis
Abstract

The first chiral helicene‐NHC gold(I) complexes efficient in enantioselective catalysis were prepared. The L‐shaped chiral ligand is composed of an imidazo[1,5‐a]pyridin‐3‐ylidene (IPy) scaffold laterally substituted by a configurationally stable [5]‐helicenoid unit. The chiral information was introduced in a key post‐functionalization step of a NHC‐gold(I) complex bearing a symmetrical anionic fluoreno[5]helicene substituent, leading to a racemic mixture of complexes featuring three correlated elements of chirality, namely central, axial and helical chirality. After HPLC enantiomeric resolution, X‐ray crystallography and theoretical calculations enabled structural and stereochemical characterization of these configurationally stable NHC‐gold(I) complexes. The high potential in asymmetric catalysis is demonstrated in the benchmark cycloisomerization of N‐tethered 1,6‐enynes with up to 95 : 5 er.

  1. Abstract

The first enantiopure chiral‐at‐rhenium complexes of the formfac‐ReX(CO)3(:C^N) have been prepared, where :C^N is a helicene‐N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand and X=Cl or I. These have complexes show strong changes in the emission characteristics, notably strongly enhanced phosphorescence lifetimes (reaching 0.7 ms) and increased circularly polarized emission (CPL) activity, as compared to their parent chiral models lacking the helicene unit. The halogen along with its position within the dissymmetric stereochemical environment strongly affect the photophysics of the complexes, particularly the phosphorescence quantum yield and lifetime. These results give fresh insight into fine tuning of photophysical and chiroptical properties of Re‐NHC systems.

  3. Abstract

The photophysical and chiroptical properties of a novel, chiral helicene‐NHC−Re(I) complex bearing anN‐(aza[6]helicenyl)‐benzimidazolylidene ligand are described, showing its ability to emit yellow circularly polarized luminescence. A comparative analysis of this new system with other helicene‐Re(I) complexes reported to date illustrates the impact of structural modifications on the emissive and absorptive properties.

  4. Abstract

The synthesis and structural analysis of a quintuple [6]helicene with a corannulene core is reported. The compound was synthesized from corannulene in three steps including a five‐fold intramolecular direct arylation. X‐ray crystallographic analysis revealed aC5‐symmetric propeller‐shaped structure and one‐dimensional alignment in the solid state. The enantiomers of the quintuple [6]helicene were successfully separated by HPLC, and the chirality of the two fractions was identified by CD spectroscopy. A kinetic study yielded a racemization barrier of 34.2 kcal mol−1, which is slightly lower than that of pristine [6]helicene. DFT calculations indicate a rapid bowl‐to‐bowl inversion of the corannulene moiety and a step‐by‐step chiral inversion pathway for the five [6]helicene moieties.

  5. Although N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been known as ligands for organometallic complexes since the 1960s, these carbenes did not attract considerable attention until Arduengo et al. reported the isolation of a metal-free imidazol-2-ylidene in 1991. In 2001 Crabtree et al. reported a few complexes featuring an NHC isomer, namely an imidazol-5-ylidene, also termed abnormal NHC (aNHCs). In 2009, it was shown that providing to protect the C-2 position of an imidazolium salt, the deprotonation occurred at the C-5 position, affording imidazol-5-ylidenes that could be isolated. Over the last ten years, stable aNHCs have been used for designing a range of catalysts employing Pd( ii ), Cu( i ), Ni( ii ), Fe(0), Zn( ii ), Ag( i ), and Au( i / iii ) metal based precursors. These catalysts were utilized for different organic transformations such as the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, C–H bond activation, dehydrogenative coupling, Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (click reaction), hydroheteroarylation, hydrosilylation reaction and migratory insertion of carbenes. Main-group metal complexes were also synthesized, including K( i ), Al( iii ), Zn( ii ), Sn( ii ), Ge( ii ), and Si( ii / iv ). Among them, K( i ), Al( iii ), and Zn( ii ) complexes were used for the polymerization of caprolactone and rac -lactide at room temperature. In addition, based on the superior nucleophilicity of aNHCs, relative to that of their nNHCs isomers, they were used for small molecules activation, such as carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), nitrous oxide (N 2 O), tetrahydrofuran (THF), tetrahydrothiophene and 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9BBN). aNHCs have also been shown to be efficient metal-free catalysts for ring opening polymerization of different cyclic esters at room temperature; they are among the most active metal-free catalysts for ε-caprolactone polymerization. Recently, aNHCs successfully accomplished the metal-free catalytic formylation of amides using CO 2 and the catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide, including atmospheric CO 2 , into methanol, under ambient conditions. Although other transition metal complexes featuring aNHCs as ligand have been prepared and used in catalysis, this review article summarize the results obtained with the isolated aNHCs.
