Title: A taxonomic revision of the Malagasy endemic subgenus Mayria of the genus Camponotus (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) based on qualitative morphology and quantitative morphometric analyses
The subgenus Mayria of the genus Camponotus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is revised. The subgenus is endemic to Madagascar where it occupies a broad range of habitats, from deciduous and dry forest to rainforest. A taxonomic review is provided of this subgenus, integrating multiples lines of evidence including qualitative morphology and quantitative morphometry. Species hypotheses are formed by Nest Centroid clustering. In total, 36 species are treated, of which eleven are newly described: Camponotus andrianjaka sp. nov. , Camponotus antsaraingy sp. nov. , Camponotus chrislaini sp. nov. , Camponotus claveri sp. nov. , Camponotus ivadia sp. nov. , Camponotus jjacquia sp. nov. , Camponotus maintilany sp. nov. , Camponotus norvigi sp. nov. , Camponotus ihazofotsy sp. nov. , Camponotus tsimelahy sp. nov. , Camponotus zoro sp. nov. Five species are redescribed. Camponotus themistocles Forel stat. nov. , is raised to species. In addition, the subgenus is redefined to include 39 species. Twenty-two previously described species are transferred to this subgenus and thirteen species previously placed in the subgenus are transferred out of the subgenus. Nine morphologically consistent species groups are delineated to facilitate species identification within the subgenus. This revision includes a classification, a key to species groups, and an updated key to species based on the minor worker caste.  more » « less

  1. The Camponotus subgenus Myrmosaga subgen. rev. from the Malagasy region is revised based on analysis of both qualitative morphological characters and morphometric traits. The multivariate analysis used the Nest Centroid (NC)-clustering method to generate species hypotheses based on 19 continuous morphological traits of minor workers. The proposed species hypotheses were confirmed by cumulative Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Morphometric ratios for the subsets of minor and major workers were used in species descriptions and redefinitions. The present study places the subgenus Myrmopytia syn. nov. in synonymy to Myrmosaga . It recognizes 38 species, of which 19 are newly described: C. aina sp. nov. , C. aro sp. nov. , C. asara sp. nov. , C. atimo sp. nov. , C. bemaheva sp. nov. , C. bozaka sp. nov. , C. daraina sp. nov. , C. harenarum sp. nov. , C. joany sp. nov. , C. karsti sp. nov. , C. kelimaso sp. nov. , C. lokobe sp. nov. , C. mahafaly sp. nov. , C. niavo sp. nov. , C. rotrae sp. nov. , C. sambiranoensis sp. nov. , C. tapia sp. nov. , C. tendryi sp. nov. , C. vano sp. nov. 2. Abstract Phylogenetic relationships of Vestini with extensive sampling were inferred using 37 taxa scored for 66 morphological characters. Consistent with recent DNA analyses, Vesta is found to be sister to Photurinae rendering Vestini monotypic. Conversely, our parsimony and model-based analyses robustly support the new subfamily Cladodinae established for Neotropical species of the former Vestini. The cladodine lineage includes Cladodes, Dodacles, Dryptelytra, Ledocas, plus the newly proposed Andecladodes gen. nov. and Brasilocladodes gen. nov. While Ledocas is mostly paraphyletic, Cladodes is polyphyletic and, therefore, Cladodes s.s. is introduced. Further, most trees presented a distinct Nyctocrepis, which is revalidated and includes the subgenus Fenestratocladodes (transferred from Cladodes). Finally, a highly supported crown clade designated as the Dodacles lineage is regularly recovered, splitting into two sister-clades: (1) Dodacles, Brasilocladodes and (2) Dryptelytra, C. proteus, C. solieri and Andecladodes. Four new Andean species are described: Andecladodes cosangensis sp. nov., A. ovalis sp. nov., Dryptelytra pampahermosae sp. nov. and Ledocas pikillactanus sp. nov. To recover the monophyly of genera, the following new combinations are proposed: Brasilocladodes carinatuscomb. nov., Brasilocladodes delalandeicomb. nov., Brasilocladodes illigericomb. nov., Dodacles lateraliscomb. nov. and Dodacles nigercomb. nov. (transferred from Cladodes); Ledocas emissuscomb. nov., Ledocas remixtuscomb. nov. (from Dodacles); Cladodes proteus comb. nov. (from Ledocas) Nyctocrepis malleri comb. nov. and Nyctocrepi stellatacomb. nov. (from Cladodes); and Cladodes cincticolliscomb. nov. and Cladodes melanuruscomb. nov. (from Vesta).

Camponotus and Colobopsis are widely distributed and species-rich genera in the ant tribe Camponotini. Molecular phylogenetic studies demonstrate that they are not sister taxa, but several lineages within each genus have converged to a remarkable degree, confounding the taxonomy of these ants. Based on multiple lines of evidence, including worker and male morphology, we demonstrate that: (1) three species of “Camponotus” belonging to the subgenus Myrmotemnus, including its type species, are in fact members of the genus Colobopsis ; (2) four species previously assigned to Colobopsis belong to the subgenus Myrmamblys of Camponotus ; and (3) three Nearctic taxa recently placed in Colobopsis are members of the genus Camponotus and closely related to Camponotus clarithorax . These taxonomic findings yield the following new or revived combinations: Colobopsis moeschi ( comb. nov. ), Colobopsis moeschi lygaea ( comb. nov. ), Colobopsis nutans ( comb. nov. ), Colobopsis nutans cleliae ( comb. nov. ), and Colobopsis reichenspergeri ( comb. nov. ); Camponotus apostemata ( comb. nov. ), Camponotus aurelianus ( comb. rev. ), Camponotus cavibregma ( comb. nov. ), Camponotus horrens ( comb. rev. ), Camponotus politae ( comb. rev. ), Camponotus trajanus ( comb. rev. ), and Camponotus yogi ( comb. rev. ). A further consequence is the following generic synonymy (senior synonym listed first): Colobopsis = Myrmotemnus syn. nov. , and Camponotus = Dolophra syn. rev. At the species level, we argue that Camponotus apostemata and Camponotus cavibregma are junior synonyms ( syn. nov. ) of Camponotus yogi , and Camponotus quercicola is a junior synonym ( syn. nov. ) of Ca. laevigatus . Taxonomic comments are also provided on some members of the Camponotus reticulatus group, with Camponotus adustus ( stat. nov. ) and Ca. leucodiscus ( stat. rev. ) being recognized as distinct species rather than subspecies of Ca. bellus . A male-based diagnosis of the Camponotini is provided, and differences between the males of Colobopsis and Camponotus are documented and illustrated for the first time. This study reveals new character systems of potential value to the systematics of these ants, including features of the male genitalia, and emphasizes the value of reciprocal illumination between phylogenomics and critical morphological analysis.

  4. Thirteen new species of Euconnus Thomson (Staphylinidae: Scydmaeninae: Glandulariini) are described from the southern Appalachian Mts, USA: Euconnus megalops sp. nov. , E. vexillus sp. nov. , E. cumberlandus sp. nov. , E. vetustus sp. nov. , E. adversus sp. nov. , E. astrus sp. nov. , E. cultellus sp. nov. , E. falcatus sp. nov. , E. cataloochee sp. nov. , E. kilmeri sp. nov. , E. draco sp. nov. , E. tusquitee sp. nov. , and E. attritus sp. nov. These share a number of morphological characters with the Old World subgenus Cladoconnus Reitter, representing a diversification of species distinct from anything previously known from the western hemisphere. Most of the species occur at higher elevations, some at the tops of the region’s highest mountains, and a few are single-peak endemics. No females of these species are winged, and in several species neither sex is winged. A preliminary phylogeny suggests the wingless species represent a clade within a clade of wing-dimorphic species.
