Title: Synthesis of anthradithiophene containing conjugated polymers via a cross-coupling strategy
New conjugated polymers that incorporate dihexylanthradithiophene (DHADT) in the main chain were prepared by Stille, Sonogashira, and Yamamoto cross-coupling polymerization reactions. The polymerization chemistry is enabled by a soluble 5,11-dibromodihexylanthradithiophene monomer that is capable of cross-coupling reactions. Five readily soluble DHADT containing polymers were prepared and characterized experimentally and computationally. These polymers possess HOMO energies of −5.18 eV to −5.43 eV and LUMO energies of −3.0 eV to −2.82 eV. The notable optical features include broad absorption and band gaps ranging from 1.62 eV to 2.15 eV. Polymers were tested in organic field effect transistors and were found to operate in the p-type regime.  more » « less

  1. Abstract

The use of direct CH arylation cross‐coupling polymerization was evaluated for the synthesis of donor–acceptor conjugated co‐polymers using the novel donor 1,6‐didecylnaphtho[1,2‐b:5,6‐b']difuran and either thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione (TPD) or 1,4‐diketopyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole (DPP) as the acceptor. Thiophene and furan moieties were used to flank the DPP group and the impact of these heterocycles on the polymers' properties was evaluated. The alkyl chains on the diketopyrrolopyrrole monomers were varied to engineer the solubility and morphology of the materials. All of the polymers have similar optoelectronic properties with narrow optical band gaps around 1.3 eV, which is ideal for solar energy harvesting. Unfortunately, these polymers also had high‐lying highest occupied molecular orbital levels of −4.8 to −5.1, and as a result bulk‐heterojunction photovoltaic cells fabricated using the soluble fullerene derivative PC71BM as the electron‐acceptor and these polymers as donor materials exhibited poor performance due to limited Vocvalues. An examination of the films from these blends indicates that film‐thickness and morphology were also a major hindrance to performance and a potential point of improvement for future materials.

  2. Abstract

Heterocyclic hypervalent (HV) iodine(III) compounds with ICl bonds and various substituents at the N atom are synthesized and found to be very efficient chain transfer agents in the polymerization of styrene with transfer coefficients exceeding that of CCl4by 2–3 orders of magnitude, depending on the structure. The chain transfer rate coefficients are also determined. Due to the presence of thermally labile HV bonds, the compounds degrade homolytically upon heating and can initiate radical polymerization. For instance, 1‐chloro‐2‐hexyl‐1,2‐benziodazol‐3(2H)‐one, is used in the polymerization of styrene, which yields low molecular weight polymers with alkyl chloride groups at the α‐ (initiation) and the ω‐chain ends (transfer). Chain‐end functionalization reactions with azide and chain extension under low‐catalyst‐concentration atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) conditions of the prepared telechelic polymers are carried out. The same initiator/chain transfer agent is successfully employed in the synthesis of highly branched polymers with multiple alkyl chloride‐type chain ends when added to mixtures of styrene and 1,4‐divinylbenzene containing 10–80 mol% of the divinyl crosslinker, or even pure crosslinker. In all cases, soluble hyperbranched polymers are obtained up to moderate monomer conversions. The effects of crosslinker and HV iodine(III) compound concentrations on the polymerization outcome are studied systematically.

This communication describes our recent efforts to utilize Wittig olefination reactions for the post-polymerization modification of polynorbornene derivatives prepared through ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Polymerizing α-bromo ester-containing norbornenes provides polymers that can undergo facile substitution with triphenylphosphine. The resulting polymeric phosphonium salt is then deprotonated to form an ylide that undergoes reaction with various aryl aldehydes in a one-pot fashion to yield the respective cinnamates. These materials can undergo further modification through photo-induced [2 + 2] cycloaddition cross-linking reactions.

  4. Sonogashira cross coupling reactions have a wide range of applications in pharmaceutical industry for drug discovery and organic synthesis of natural products and pharmaceutical compounds. These reactions typically involve the coupling of aryl halides with terminal alkynes in the presence of palladium catalyst under appropriate reaction conditions. Most Sonogashira reactions have been carried out with homogeneous Pd catalysis, in which the catalyst is soluble in the reaction mixture. There are many disadvantages to this method including the difficulty to remove the catalyst from the sample and recyclability. Heterogeneous catalysis is an alternative approach to address the issues associated with homogeneous system mainly due to facile and clean removal of the catalyst and minimum metal residual contamination. Herein, we report the preparation of nickel-palladium nanoparticles supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Ni-Pd/MWCNTs) as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for Sonogashira coupling reactions. The catalyst was prepared by mixing the appropriate ratio of nickel-palladium salts with multi-walled carbon nanotubes using a mechanical power of a ball mill. The nanoparticles prepared by this method were successfully used to catalyze Sonogashira coupling reactions of various substituted aryl halides and terminal alkynes using an equal amount of water and ethanol as an environmentally benign solvent system. This project provides a facile and effective method for largescale preparation of Ni-Pd/MWCNTs to catalyze Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions. The recyclability of the catalyst makes this an affordable and clean option for pharmaceutical and industrial applications.

  5. We report a green solvent-to-polymer upgrading transformation of chemicals of the lactic acid portfolio into water-soluble lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-type acrylic polymers. Aqueous Cu(0)-mediated living radical polymerization (SET-LRP) was utilized for the rapid synthesis of N -substituted lactamide-type homo and random acrylic copolymers under mild conditions. A particularly unique aspect of this work is that the water-soluble monomers and the SET-LRP initiator used to produce the corresponding polymers were synthesized from biorenewable and non-toxic solvents, namely natural ethyl lactate and BASF's Agnique® AMD 3L ( N , N -dimethyl lactamide, DML). The pre-disproportionation of Cu( i )Br in the presence of tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (Me 6 TREN) in water generated nascent Cu(0) and Cu( ii ) complexes that facilitated the fast polymerization of N -tetrahydrofurfuryl lactamide and N , N -dimethyl lactamide acrylate monomers (THFLA and DMLA, respectively) up to near-quantitative conversion with excellent control over molecular weight (5000 < M n < 83 000) and dispersity (1.05 < Đ < 1.16). Interestingly, poly(THFLA) showed a degree of polymerization and concentration dependent LCST behavior, which can be fine-tuned ( T cp = 12–62 °C) through random copolymerization with the more hydrophilic DMLA monomer. Finally, covalent cross-linking of these polymers resulted in a new family of thermo-responsive hydrogels with excellent biocompatibility and tunable swelling and LCST transition. These illustrate the versatility of these neoteric green polymers in the preparation of smart and biocompatible soft materials.
