Dataset Abstract Aboveground annual net primary production (ANPP) has been measured on the LTER main site since 1990 and on the successional and forested sites since 1993. ANPP is measured at peak biomass for a given treatment. In some systems with multiple harvests or complex communities that have peaks occurring at different times of the year, measurements are taken at multiple times per year. Additional ANPP measurements are made where appropriate using leaf litter traps, estimates of diameter from tree basal diameter and for the poplar treatment occasional destructive harvests. See the ANPP protocol for descriptions of the sampling and measurement methods for each of the treatments. original data source http://lter.kbs.msu.edu/datasets/22

Plant Carbon and Nitrogen Content at the Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, MI (1989 to 2018)
Dataset Abstract This dataset includes total carbon and total nitrogen measured for plants from the LTER Main Site and the Successional and Forested sites. Total C and N are analyzed at peak biomass for a given treatment. In some systems with multiple harvests or complex communities that have peaks occurring at different times of the year, measurements are taken at multiple times per year. Samples are combusted and measured on a CHN analyzer. original data source http://lter.kbs.msu.edu/datasets/32

Predicted climate change extremes, such as severe and prolonged drought, may profoundly impact biogeochemical processes like carbon and nitrogen cycling in water-limited ecosystems. To increase our understanding of how extreme climate events impact belowground ecosystem processes, we investigated the effects of five years of severe growing season drought and two-month delay in monsoon precipitation on belowground productivity and biogeochemical processes in two semi-arid grasslands. This experiment takes place during the fifth year of the Extreme Drought in Grassland Experiment (EDGE) at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (SNWR), a Long-Term Ecological Research in central New Mexico, USA. The two grassland sites a Chihuahuan Desert grassland dominated by Bouteloua eriopoda and Great Plains grassland dominated by B. gracilis are ~5km apart in the SWNR. The EDGE platform was established in the spring of 2012 (pre-treatment). Each site contains three treatments (ten replicates): ambient rainfall, extreme growing season drought, and delayed monsoon. The extreme drought treatment reduces growing season rainfall (April through September) each year by 66%, which equates to a 50% reduction of annual precipitation while maintaining natural precipitation patterns. There are 10 replicates per treatment within each site. All plots are 3 x 4 m in size and are paired spatially into blocks with treatments assigned randomly within a block. We measured an array of belowground and biogeochemical variables. Each variable was measured either once, twice, or three times (specific information on sampling scheme for each measured variable in methods section). Belowground net primary productivity, standing crop root biomass, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen were measured once. Extractable organic carbon, extractable total nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomass nitrogen and extracellular enzymes were measured twice. Available soil nitrate, available soil ammonium, and available soil phosphate were measured three times.more » « less

Parameters characterizing the nutrient chemistry of the eleven primary lakes (Allequash, Big Muskellunge, Crystal, Sparkling, and Trout lakes, unnamed lakes 27-02 [Crystal Bog] and 12-15 [Trout Bog], Mendota, Monona, Wingra, and Fish) are measured at multiple depths throughout the year. These parameters include total nitrogen, total dissolved nitrogen, nitrite+nitrate-N, ammonium-N, total phosphorus, total dissolved phosphorus, dissolved reactive phosphorus (only in the southern lakes and not in Wingra and Fish after 2003), bicarbonate-reactive filtered and unfiltered silica (both discontinued in 2003), dissolved reactive silica, pH, air equilibrated pH (discontinued in 2014 in the northern lakes and in 2020 in the southern lakes), total alkalinity, total inorganic carbon, dissolved inorganic carbon, total organic carbon, dissolved organic carbon, and total particulate matter (only in the northern lakes in this data set; total particulate matter in southern lakes starting in 2000 is available in a separate dataset). Sampling Frequency: Northern lakes- monthly during ice-free season - every 5 weeks during ice-covered season. Southern lakes- Southern lakes samples are collected every 2-4 weeks during the summer stratified period, at least monthly during the fall, and typically only once during the winter, depending on ice conditions. Dataset Abstract In 1998, a new protocol was instituted for measuring the diameters of every tree greater than 5 cm dbh in the coniferous and deciduous forest plots. Trees are usually measured in January. Exponential equations are used to estimate tree mass for each year. The goal is to estimate wood production for any given time period (usually one year) as the difference between two estimates of mass. original data source http://lter.kbs.msu.edu/datasets/48more » « less

Hbr363: WS3 One year of resin-extracted solutes from variably saturated soils The Lateral Weathering Study looks at spatial patterns of mineral weathering processes at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. This project is characterizing mineral and elemental depletion/enrichment, soil morphology and chemistry, solute transport, and groundwater chemistry along hydropedological gradients. This dataset provides the total elemental mass of inorganic solutes (Ca, Na, Mg, Al, Fe, Mn, P, and S) as well as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) that were extracted off resins installed into shallow groundwater wells (~30-100cm) in Watershed 3. Resin packs were deployed for a total of one year (August 2019-2020) with four consecutive deployment periods, to avoid overloading resin ion capacity. Total mass for each solute was accounted for an entire resin pack, which was 5cm in height and 5cm in diameter, containing approximately 90 g of resin. Resin packs were installed in three different topographic positions along three transects (sites = 9), to characterize solute mass fluxes through different hydropedological units.more » « less
