Abstract V = 9.9 mag) main-sequence F7 star TOI-1670 by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. TOI-1670 b is a sub-Neptune (R ⊕) on a 10.9 day orbit, and TOI-1670 c is a warm Jupiter (R Jup) on a 40.7 day orbit. Using radial velocity observations gathered with the Tull Coudé Spectrograph on the Harlan J. Smith telescope and HARPS-N on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we find a planet mass ofM Jupfor the outer warm Jupiter, implying a mean density of g cm−3. The inner sub-Neptune is undetected in our radial velocity data (M b< 0.13M Jupat the 99% confidence level). Multiplanet systems like TOI-1670 hosting an outer warm Jupiter on a nearly circular orbit ( ) and one or more inner coplanar planets are more consistent with “gentle” formation mechanisms such as disk migration or in situ formation rather than high-eccentricity migration. Of the 11 known systems with a warm Jupiter and a smaller inner companion, eight (73%) are near a low-order mean-motion resonance, which can be a signature of migration. TOI-1670 joins two other systems (27% of this subsample) with period commensurabilities greater than 3, a common feature of in situ formation or halted inward migration. TOI-1670 and the handful of similar systems support a diversity of formation pathways for warm Jupiters. -
Abstract We present a detection of 21 cm emission from large-scale structure (LSS) between redshift 0.78 and 1.43 made with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment. Radio observations acquired over 102 nights are used to construct maps that are foreground filtered and stacked on the angular and spectral locations of luminous red galaxies (LRGs), emission-line galaxies (ELGs), and quasars (QSOs) from the eBOSS clustering catalogs. We find decisive evidence for a detection when stacking on all three tracers of LSS, with the logarithm of the Bayes factor equal to 18.9 (LRG), 10.8 (ELG), and 56.3 (QSO). An alternative frequentist interpretation, based on the likelihood ratio test, yields a detection significance of 7.1
σ (LRG), 5.7σ (ELG), and 11.1σ (QSO). These are the first 21 cm intensity mapping measurements made with an interferometer. We constrain the effective clustering amplitude of neutral hydrogen (Hi ), defined as , where ΩHi is the cosmic abundance of Hi ,b Hi is the linear bias of Hi , and 〈f μ 2〉 = 0.552 encodes the effect of redshift-space distortions at linear order. We find for LRGs (z = 0.84), for ELGs (z = 0.96), and for QSOs (z = 1.20), with constraints limited by modeling uncertainties at nonlinear scales. We are also sensitive to bias in the spectroscopic redshifts of each tracer, and we find a nonzero bias Δv = − 66 ± 20 km s−1for the QSOs. We split the QSO catalog into three redshift bins and have a decisive detection in each, with the upper bin atz = 1.30 producing the highest-redshift 21 cm intensity mapping measurement thus far. -
Abstract M dwarfs are common host stars to exoplanets but often lack atmospheric abundance measurements. Late-M dwarfs are also good analogs to the youngest substellar companions, which share similar
T eff∼ 2300–2800 K. We present atmospheric analyses for the M7.5 companion HIP 55507 B and its K6V primary star with Keck/KPIC high-resolution (R ∼ 35,000)K -band spectroscopy. First, by including KPIC relative radial velocities between the primary and secondary in the orbit fit, we improve the dynamical mass precision by 60% and find , putting HIP 55507 B above the stellar–substellar boundary. We also find that HIP 55507 B orbits its K6V primary star with au ande = 0.40 ± 0.04. From atmospheric retrievals of HIP 55507 B, we measure [C/H] = 0.24 ± 0.13, [O/H] = 0.15 ± 0.13, and C/O = 0.67 ± 0.04. Moreover, we strongly detect13CO (7.8σ significance) and tentatively detect (3.7σ significance) in the companion’s atmosphere and measure and after accounting for systematic errors. From a simplified retrieval analysis of HIP 55507 A, we measure and for the primary star. These results demonstrate that HIP 55507 A and B have consistent12C/13C and16O/18O to the <1σ level, as expected for a chemically homogeneous binary system. Given the similar flux ratios and separations between HIP 55507 AB and systems with young substellar companions, our results open the door to systematically measuring13CO and abundances in the atmospheres of substellar or even planetary-mass companions with similar spectral types. -
Abstract We present the KODIAQ-Z survey aimed to characterize the cool, photoionized gas at 2.2 ≲
z ≲ 3.6 in 202 Hi -selected absorbers with 14.6 ≤ < 20 that probe the interface between galaxies and the intergalactic medium (IGM). We find that gas with at 2.2 ≲z ≲ 3.6 can be metal-rich (−1.6 ≲ [X/H] ≲ − 0.2) as seen in damped Lyα absorbers (DLAs); it can also be very metal-poor ([X/H] < − 2.4) or even pristine ([X/H] < − 3.8), which is not observed in DLAs but is common in the IGM. For absorbers, the frequency of pristine absorbers is about 1%–10%, while for absorbers it is 10%–20%, similar to the diffuse IGM. Supersolar gas is extremely rare (<1%) at these redshifts. The factor of several thousand spread from the lowest to highest metallicities and large metallicity variations (a factor of a few to >100) between absorbers separated by less than Δv < 500 km s−1imply that the metals are poorly mixed in gas. We show that these photoionized absorbers contribute to about 14% of the cosmic baryons and 45% of the cosmic metals at 2.2 ≲z ≲ 3.6. We find that the mean metallicity increases withN Hi , consistent with what is found inz < 1 gas. The metallicity of gas in this column density regime has increased by a factor ∼8 from 2.2 ≲z ≲ 3.6 toz < 1, but the contribution of the absorbers to the total metal budget of the universe atz < 1 is a quarter of that at 2.2 ≲z ≲ 3.6. We show that FOGGIE cosmological zoom-in simulations have a similar evolution of [X/H] withN Hi , which is not observed in lower-resolution simulations. In these simulations, very metal-poor absorbers with [X/H] < − 2.4 atz ∼ 2–3 are tracers of inflows, while higher-metallicity absorbers are a mixture of inflows and outflows. -
Abstract We present a spectroscopic analysis of Eridanus IV (Eri IV) and Centaurus I (Cen I), two ultrafaint dwarf galaxies of the Milky Way. Using IMACS/Magellan spectroscopy, we identify 28 member stars of Eri IV and 34 member stars of Cen I. For Eri IV, we measure a systemic velocity of
, and velocity dispersion . Additionally, we measure the metallicities of 16 member stars of Eri IV. We find a metallicity of , and resolve a dispersion ofσ [Fe/H]=0.20 ± 0.09. The mean metallicity is marginally lower than all other known ultrafaint dwarf galaxies, making it one of the most metal-poor galaxies discovered thus far. Eri IV also has a somewhat unusual right-skewed metallicity distribution. For Cen I, we find a velocityv sys= 44.9 ± 0.8 km s−1, and velocity dispersion . We measure the metallicities of 27 member stars of Cen I, and find a mean metallicity [Fe/H] = −2.57 ± 0.08, and metallicity dispersion . We calculate the systemic proper motion, orbit, and the astrophysical J-factor for each system, the latter of which indicates that Eri IV is a good target for indirect dark matter detection. We also find no strong evidence for tidal stripping of Cen I or Eri IV. Overall, our measurements confirm that Eri IV and Cen I are dark-matter-dominated galaxies with properties largely consistent with other known ultrafaint dwarf galaxies. The low metallicity, right-skewed metallicity distribution, and high J-factor make Eri IV an especially interesting candidate for further follow-up.
