Abstract Although increasing efforts have been devoted to the development of non‐invasive wearable electrochemical sweat sensors for monitoring physiological and metabolic information, most of them still suffer from poor stability and specificity over time and fluctuating temperatures. This study reports the design and fabrication of a long‐term stable and highly sensitive flexible electrochemical sensor based on nanocomposite‐modified porous graphene by facile laser treatment for detecting biomarkers such as glucose in sweat. The laser‐reduced and patterned stable conductive nanocomposite on the porous graphene electrode provides the resulting glucose sensor with an excellent sensitivity of 1317.69 µA mm−1cm−2and an ultra‐low limit of detection of 0.079 µm. The sensor can also detect pH and exhibit extraordinary stability to maintain more than 91% sensitivity over 21 days in ambient conditions. Taken together with a temperature sensor based on the same material system, the dual glucose and pH sensor integrated with a flexible microfluidic sweat sampling network further results in accurate continuous on‐body glucose detection calibrated by the simultaneously measured pH and temperature. The low‐cost, highly sensitive, and long‐term stable platform could facilitate the early identification and continuous monitoring of different biomarkers for non‐invasive disease diagnosis and treatment evaluation.

A non-invasive multipoint product temperature measurement for pharmaceutical lyophilization
Abstract Monitoring product temperature during lyophilization is critical, especially during the process development stage, as the final product may be jeopardized if its process temperature exceeds a threshold value. Also, in-situ temperature monitoring of the product gives the capability of creating an optimized closed-loop lyophilization process. While conventional thermocouples can track product temperature, they are invasive, limited to a single-point measurement, and can significantly alter the freezing and drying behavior of the product in the monitored vial. This work has developed a new methodology that combines non-invasive temperature monitoring and comprehensive modeling. It allows the accurate reconstruction of the complete temperature profile of the product inside the vial during the lyophilization process. The proposed methodology is experimentally validated by combining the sensors’ wirelessly collected data with the advanced multiphysics simulations. The flexible wireless multi-point temperature sensing probe is produced using micro-manufacturing techniques and attached outside the vial, allowing for accurate extraction of the product temperature.

Abstract Weasels (genusMustelaandNeogale) are of management concern as declining native species in some regions and invasive species in others. Regardless of the need to conserve or remove weasels, there is increasingly a need to use non‐invasive monitoring methods to assess population trends.We conducted a literature review and held the first ever International Weasel Monitoring Symposium to synthesise information on historical and current non‐invasive monitoring techniques for weasels. We also explored current limitations, opportunities, and areas of development to guide future research and long‐term monitoring.Our literature search revealed that in the past 20 years, camera traps were the most commonly used non‐invasive monitoring method (62% of studies), followed by track plates or scent stations designed to collect footprints (23%) and walking transects for tracks in snow or soil (8.7%).Experts agreed that the most promising non‐invasive monitoring techniques available include use of citizen scientist reporting, detection dogs, detecting tracks, non‐invasive genetic surveys, and enclosed or unenclosed camera trap systems. Because each technique has benefits and limitations, using a multi‐method approach is likely required.There is a need for strong commitment to dedicated monitoring that is replicated over space and time such that trend data can be ascertained to better inform future management action. The diversity of non‐invasive monitoring methods now available makes such monitoring possible with relatively minor commitments of funding and effort.more » « less

Understanding and monitoring nearshore environments is essential, given that these fine-scaled ecosystems are integral to human well-being. While satellites offer an opportunity to gain synchronous and spatially extensive data of coastal areas, off-the-shelf calibrated satellite sea surface temperature (SST) measurements have only been available at coarse resolutions of 1 km or larger. In this study, we develop a novel methodology to create a simple linear equation to calibrate fine-scale Landsat thermal infrared radiation brightness temperatures (calibrated for land sensing) to derive SST at a resolution of 100 m. The constants of this equation are derived from correlations of coincident MODIS SST and Landsat data, which we filter to find optimal pairs. Validation against in situ sensor data at varying distances from the shore in Northern California shows that our SST estimates are more accurate than prior off-the-shelf Landsat data calibrated for land surfaces. These fine-scale SST estimates also demonstrate superior accuracy compared with coincident MODIS SST estimates. The root mean square error for our minimally filtered dataset (n = 557 images) ranges from 0.76 to 1.20 °C with correlation coefficients from r = 0.73 to 0.92, and for our optimal dataset (n = 229 images), the error is from 0.62 to 0.98 °C with correlations from r = 0.83 to 0.92. Potential error sources related to stratification and seasonality are examined and we conclude that Landsat data represent skin temperatures with an error between 0.62 and 0.73 °C. We discuss the utility of our methodology for enhancing coastal monitoring efforts and capturing previously unseen spatial complexity. Testing the calibration methodology on Landsat images before and after the temporal bounds of accurate MODIS SST measurements shows successful calibration with lower errors than the off-the-shelf, land-calibrated Landsat product, extending the applicability of our approach. This new approach for obtaining high-resolution SST data in nearshore waters may be applied to other upwelling regions globally, contributing to improved coastal monitoring, management, and research.more » « less

Abstract We introduce a novel geometry‐oriented methodology, based on the emerging tools of topological data analysis, into the change‐point detection framework. The key rationale is that change points are likely to be associated with changes in geometry behind the data‐generating process. While the applications of topological data analysis to change‐point detection are potentially very broad, in this paper, we primarily focus on integrating topological concepts with the existing nonparametric methods for change‐point detection. In particular, the proposed new geometry‐oriented approach aims to enhance detection accuracy of distributional regime shift locations. Our simulation studies suggest that integration of topological data analysis with some existing algorithms for change‐point detection leads to consistently more accurate detection results. We illustrate our new methodology in application to the two closely related environmental time series data sets—ice phenology of the Lake Baikal and the North Atlantic Oscillation indices, in a research query for a possible association between their estimated regime shift locations.more » « less

Abstract BackgroundMillions of catheters for invasive arterial pressure monitoring are placed annually in intensive care units, emergency rooms, and operating rooms to guide medical treatment decision-making. Accurate assessment of arterial blood pressure requires an IV pole-attached pressure transducer placed at the same height as a reference point on the patient’s body, typically, the heart. Every time a patient moves, or the bed is adjusted, a nurse or physician must adjust the height of the pressure transducer. There are no alarms to indicate a discrepancy between the patient and transducer height, leading to inaccurate blood pressure measurements. MethodsWe present a low-power wireless wearable tracking device that uses inaudible acoustic signals emitted from a speaker array to automatically compute height changes and correct the mean arterial blood pressure. Performance of this device was tested in 26 patients with arterial lines in place. ResultsOur system calculates the mean arterial pressure with a bias of 0.19, inter-class correlation coefficients of 0.959 and a median difference of 1.6 mmHg when compared to clinical invasive arterial measurements. ConclusionsGiven the increased workload demands on nurses and physicians, our proof-of concept technology may improve accuracy of pressure measurements and reduce the task burden for medical staff by automating a task that previously required manual manipulation and close patient surveillance.more » « less
