Title: Transnational Mexican Youth Negotiating Languages, Identities, and Cultures Online: A Chronotopic Lens
Abstract

This article presents a case study with two transnational Mexican youth that came from a larger study of the digital media practices of young people in an urban high school. Our study takes a chronotopic (Bakhtin, 1981) lens to understand the youths' accounts of their digital communication. Analysis of interviews and observations with the youth when they described their online activities show that the youth employed digital literacies to vicariously “live” experiences and keep up with life away from their families in Mexico. The youth situated their activities in three distinct but dialogical chronotopes (family, hometown, and transborder) to create transnational connections and make sense of who they are. They drew on digital artifacts to narrate themselves, developed familial, cultural, and political knowledge, and expanded their linguistic repertoires in the process. The findings have implications for TESOL classrooms that seek to build on the border‐crossing experiences and linguistic and multimodal resources of young people in their learning. We discuss how youths' digital practices and embedded artifacts serve to construct multiple contexts and vantage points for developing their transnational identities and knowledge, and how these practices could be recognized as agentic forms of narrative production and learning in the classroom.

  1. Introduction

    There is a critical need to develop innovative educational strategies that engage youth in meaningful mathematics learning, particularly students from groups that have been historically marginalized in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In this study, we explore youths’ participation in two collaborative projects from the Growing Mathletes curriculum which combines baseball contexts and mathematics. Our goal was to understand the potential of these projects to support youths’ engagement with mathematical ideas and practices, and the extent to which youth leveraged a range of resources, including prior experiences and funds of knowledge, to inform their decisions and understanding.

    Methods

    The Design a Stadium and Baseball Team Roster projects were implemented in two afterschool setting sites and two summer program sites with 102 youth of all genders in grades 3 to 8. Data sources included video recordings of youth participation in the project, project artifacts, and youth interviews.

    Results

    We found the projects contained specific features that supported youths’ engagement in three specific mathematical practices: (1) make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, (2) reason abstractly and quantitatively, and (3) construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Additionally, there is evidence that while engaging in these projects youth drew on their own funds of knowledge to inform their decisions and understanding.

    Conclusion

    Our findings point to key implications for researchers, educators, and curriculum developers in informal STEM learning spaces.

This study explores how young people, aged 14-22, employed as facilitators of math learning for younger children in an out-of-school time organization, talk with each other about their experiences as they participate in a routine known as “debriefs.” Debriefs occur between facilitation sessions and allow opportunities for youth to discuss mathematical ideas and understand their roles as facilitators. They also provide space for youth to begin planning the next facilitation. Through interaction analysis of one typical debrief session, we offer implications for understanding how debriefs contribute to the unique ways that young people develop their pedagogical approaches—a process we call “youth pedagogical development.

    A key form of scientific literacy is being able to leverage the knowledge, practices, and commitments of ethical science to everyday civic matters of social consequence. Learning how to engage in civic life in equity-focused ways needs to be intertwined with learning disciplinary—or transdisciplinary—knowledge and practices. In this article we discuss how an art-science learning program at Science Gallery Dublin in Ireland supported subsequent civic participation by adolescent youth. Using longitudinal case studies of young people, we document how they became agents of change in their homes, schools, and wider communities over several years after participating in the program. This work provides insight into how specific design features of informal learning environments help launch or expand the science-linked identities of youth interested in participation in civic life and social action. These cases also illustrate how to develop educational models that support young people to take informed action toward matters of community and environmental consequence, a key aspect of building a more sustainable and thriving future.

Despite an increasing understanding of how underlying systems of oppression show up and operate in STEM classrooms, little is known about how Black joy and reauthoring can be utilized in supporting Black youths’ navigation of oppressive, anti-Black systems as STEM learners. Partnering with community educators, scholars, and middle and high school teachers collectively called the Black Joy Group, this study conceptualizes the role of joy in Black youth’s STEM identity development. Further, this study examines salient narratives of STEM, which often exclude Black joy and frame Black youths’ STEM participation from deficit perspectives. The Black Joy Group sought to develop a framework for reauthoring to support Black youths’ negotiation of dominant STEM narratives. Reauthoring was investigated from a decolonial perspective, centering embodied learning as a sensemaking strategy. For this participatory model, the Black Joy Group conceptualized Black joy in STEM classrooms through body mapping, drawing, collaging, and by setting intentions to better notice and honor the feelings and sensations of the body. Data sources include interviews and artifacts from Black Joy Group meetings and student reauthoring sessions with Black youth. Data were analyzed thematically to identify instances of STEM reauthoring, classroom practices that best support STEM reauthoring, and abolitionist strategies to support students in expressing joy as an act of reauthoring within a white-dominated space. Results from this study suggest that the constraints of Black joy often stem from whiteness and capitalist pressures that shape how both Black youth and educators of Black youth show up and engage in STEM spaces. Additionally, results suggest that students perceive their belonging in STEM as contentious since they view themselves as STEM people both inside and outside of traditional STEM domains. These findings may support education researchers in continuing to challenge dominant deficit narratives that negatively portray Black youth. Finally, these findings may support educators in providing opportunities for Black youth to exercise their agency to reauthor in STEM classrooms and positively renegotiate their identities in relation to STEM.

  5. Young learners today are constantly influenced by AI recommendations, from media choices to social connections. The resulting "filter bubble" can limit their exposure to diverse perspectives, which is especially problematic when they are not aware this manipulation is happening or why. To address the need to support youth AI literacy, we developed "BeeTrap", a mobile Augmented Reality (AR) learning game designed to enlighten young learners about the mechanisms and the ethical issue of recommendation systems. Transformative Experience model was integrated into learning activities design, focusing on making AI concepts relevant to students’ daily experiences, facilitating a new understanding of their digital world, and modeling real-life applications. Our pilot study with middle schoolers in a community-based program primarily investigated how transformative structured AI learning activities affected students’ understanding of recommendation systems and their overall conceptual, emotional, and behavioral changes toward AI.
