Title: Polycyclic Aromatic Heterocycles with a Benzo[ c ][1,2]azaborinine Core

2‐Formylphenylboronic acid condenses with active methylene reagents like α‐amino esters, ketones, and lactams directly to give benzo‐fused 1‐hydroxy‐2,1‐azaborines in good yields within minutes under microwave‐accelerated conditions. The new stable boron heterocycles prepared to demonstrate this approach were characterized by NMR spectroscopy. Three members of a new diboron heteropentacyclic ring system, 5a,12a‐diaza‐5,12‐dibora‐5,12‐dihydroxypentacene‐6,13‐dione, were prepared, and one of these highly fluorescent compounds was characterized by X‐ray crystallography. Some key solid‐state structural features revealed by the X‐ray analysis provide a basis for explaining the limited solubility of these pentaheterocycles in common organic solvents.

Metal-free, magnesium, titanyl, and vanadyl tetrapyrazinoporphyrazines substituted with eight 2,6-diisopropylphenoxy groups at the peripheral positions were prepared and characterized by NMR, UV-Vis, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and mass spectrometry methods. In addition, the Pc(2,6iPrPhO)8VO complex was characterized by EPR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Reaction between TiCl4with 4,5-(2,6-diisopropylphenoxy)phthalonitrile in N,N-dimethylaminoethanol resulted in the formation of a red open-chain trimer, which was characterized by mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. Electronic structures of new compounds and their excited state properties were probed by Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-Dependent DFT (TDDFT) methods.

  2. Two dinuclear lanthanide complexes (Gd and Dy) were prepared and characterized by X-ray, magnetic and computational methods. The Dy analogue shows SMM behavior with an energy barrier of 98.4 K in the absence of an applied dc field. Theoretical calculations were performed on model complexes which support the hypothesis that the energy barrier will increase if the soft-donor atoms S and Se are used in lieu of an O donor.

  3. Abstract

A sterically strained 32π‐electron antiaromatic bis‐BODIPY macrocycle in which two BODIPY fragments are linked byp‐divinylbenzene groups was prepared and characterized. Unlike regular BODIPYs, the fluorescence in this macrocycle is quenched. The broad signals in the NMR spectra of the macrocycle were explained by the vibronic freedom of thep‐divinylbenzene fragments. The possible diradicaloid nature of the macrocycle was excluded on the basis of variable‐temperature EPR spectra in solution and in solid state, which is indicative of its closed‐shell quinoidal structure. Themeso‐C−H bond in the macrocycle and its precursor BODIPY dialdehyde3forms a weak hydrogen bond with THF and is susceptible for the nucleophilic attack by organic amines and cyanide anion. The reaction products of such a nucleophilic attack havemeso‐sp3carbon atoms and were characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry and, in one case, X‐ray crystallography. Unlike the initial bis‐BODIPY macrocycle, the adducts have strong fluorescence in the 400 nm region. The electronic structure and spectroscopic properties of new chromophores were probed by density functional theory (DFT) and time‐dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations and correlate well with the experimental data.

  4. Reaction of bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)ethane dioxide with hydrogen peroxide leads to an extended crystalline network based on the formation of hydrogen bonds with the PO groups of the diphosphine dioxide. The structural motif of the network is characterized by X-ray diffraction. A new selective synthesis for an industrially important MEKPO (methyl ethyl ketone peroxide) dimer is described. The dimer is created by reaction of dppe dioxide (bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane dioxide) with butanone and hydrogen peroxide. This peroxide is stabilized by forming strong hydrogen bonds to the phosphine oxide groups within an extended network, which has been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Reaction of acetylacetone with hydrogen peroxide, irrespective of the presence of phosphine oxide, leads to the stereoselective formation of two dioxolanes. Both cyclic peroxides have been obtained in crystalline forms suitable for single crystal X-ray diffractions.

  5. New conjugated polymers that incorporate dihexylanthradithiophene (DHADT) in the main chain were prepared by Stille, Sonogashira, and Yamamoto cross-coupling polymerization reactions. The polymerization chemistry is enabled by a soluble 5,11-dibromodihexylanthradithiophene monomer that is capable of cross-coupling reactions. Five readily soluble DHADT containing polymers were prepared and characterized experimentally and computationally. These polymers possess HOMO energies of −5.18 eV to −5.43 eV and LUMO energies of −3.0 eV to −2.82 eV. The notable optical features include broad absorption and band gaps ranging from 1.62 eV to 2.15 eV. Polymers were tested in organic field effect transistors and were found to operate in the p-type regime.
