Abstract A new series of mono‐ and bis‐alkynyl CoIII(TIM) complexes (TIM=2,3,9,10‐tetramethyl‐1,4,8,11‐tetraazacyclotetradeca‐1,3,8,10‐tetraene) is reported herein. Thetrans‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)Cl]+complexes were prepared from the reaction betweentrans‐[Co(TIM)Cl2]PF6and HC2R (R=tri(isopropyl)silyl or TIPS (1), ‐C6H4‐4‐tBu (2), ‐C6H4‐4‐NO2(3 a), andN‐mesityl‐1,8‐naphthalimide or NAPMes(4 a)) in the presence of Et3N. The intermediate complexes of the typetrans‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)(NCMe)](PF6)(OTf),3 band4 b, were obtained by treating3 aand4 a, respectively, with AgOTf in CH3CN. Furthermore, bis‐alkynyltrans‐[Co(TIM)(C2R)2]PF6complexes,3 cand4 c, were generated following a second dehydrohalogenation reaction between3 band4 b, respectively, and the appropriate HC2R in the presence of Et3N. These new complexes have been characterized using X‐ray diffraction (2,3 a,4 a, and4 c), IR,1H NMR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, fluorescent spectroscopy (4 c), and cyclic voltammetry.

Hydrogen Bond‐Assisted Fluoride Binding by a Stiborane

Abstract To augment the fluoride binding ability of Lewis acidic stiboranes, we have synthesized and characterized a SbVderivative (PhSbF2((o‐(NH(2,6‐C6H3F2)C6H4)2,3) featuring diarylamine groups installed in proximity to the antimony center and poised to engage Sb‐bound fluoride anions in hydrogen bonding interactions. A competition experiment between3and Ph3SbF2(4) along with calculations show that the fluoride ion affinity of3is superior to that of4.

Abstract Main‐group element‐mediated C−H activation remains experimentally challenging and the development of clear concepts and design principles has been limited by the increased reactivity of relevant complexes, especially for the heavier elements. Herein, we report that the stibenium ion [(pyCDC)Sb][NTf2]3(1) (pyCDC=bis‐pyridyl carbodicarbene; NTf2=bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide) reacts with acetonitrile in the presence of the base 2,6‐di‐tert‐butylpyridine to enable C(sp3)−H bond breaking to generate the stiba‐methylene nitrile complex [(pyCDC)Sb(CH2CN)][NTf2]2(2). Kinetic analyses were performed to elucidate the rate dependence for all the substrates involved in the reaction. Computational studies suggest that C−H activation proceeds via a mechanism in which acetonitrile first coordinates to the Sb center through the nitrogen atom in a κ1fashion, thereby weakening the C−H bond which can then be deprotonated by base in solution. Further, we show that1reacts with terminal alkynes in the presence of 2,6‐di‐tert‐butylpyridine to enable C(sp)−H bond breaking to form stiba‐alkynyl adducts of the type [(pyCDC)Sb(CCR)][NTf2]2(3 a–f). Compound1shows excellent specificity for the activation of the terminal C(sp)−H bond even across alkynes with diverse functionality. The resulting stiba‐methylene nitrile and stiba‐alkynyl adducts react with elemental iodine (I2) to produce iodoacetonitrile and iodoalkynes, while regenerating an Sb trication.more » « less

We describe the synthesis of [ o -Ph 2 P(O)(C 6 H 4 )SbPh 3 ] + ([2] + ), an intramolecularly base-stabilized stibonium Lewis acid which was obtained by reaction of [ o -Ph 2 P(C 6 H 4 )SbPh 3 ] + with NOBF 4 . This cation reacts with fluoride anions to afford the corresponding fluorostiborane o -Ph 2 P(O)(C 6 H 4 )SbFPh 3 , the structure of which indicates a strengthening of the PO → Sb interaction. When deployed in fluoride-containing POPC unilamellar vesicles, [2] + behaves as a potent fluoride anion transporter whose activity greatly exceeds that of [Ph 4 Sb] + .more » « less

Abstract Reaction of {LiC6H2−2,4,6‐Cyp3⋅Et2O}2(Cyp=cyclopentyl) (1) of the new dispersion energy donor (DED) ligand, 2,4,6‐triscyclopentylphenyl with SnCl2afforded a mixture of the distannene {Sn(C6H2−2,4,6‐Cyp3)2}2(2), and the cyclotristannane {Sn(C6H2−2,4,6‐Cyp3)2}3(3).2is favored in solution at higher temperature (345 K or above) whereas3is preferred near 298 K. Van't Hoff analysis revealed the3to2conversion has a ΔH=33.36 kcal mol−1and ΔS=0.102 kcal mol−1 K−1, which gives a ΔG300 K=+2.86 kcal mol−1, showing that the conversion of3to2is an endergonic process. Computational studies show that DED stabilization in3is −28.5 kcal mol−1per {Sn(C6H2−2,4,6‐Cyp3)2unit, which exceeds the DED energy in2of −16.3 kcal mol−1per unit. The data clearly show that dispersion interactions are the main arbiter of the3to2equilibrium. Both2and3possess large dispersion stabilization energies which suppress monomer dissociation (supported by EDA results).more » « less

The reactions of triphenylsulfonium chloride ([TPS][Cl]) with various acids in methanol yield the corresponding salts triphenylsulfonium triiodide, C18H15S+·I3−or [TPS][I3] (I), triphenylsulfonium perchlorate, C18H15S+·ClO4−or [TPS][ClO4] (II), and triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate, C18H15S+·PF6−or [TPS][PF6] (III), as crystalline products. These crystals were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all three compounds, the sulfur atom in the triphenylsulfonium cation adopts a distorted trigonal–pyramidal geometry. [TPS][I3] (I) and [TPS][PF6](III) both crystallize in the space groupP21/n, while [TPS][ClO4] (II) crystallizes inP21. The S—C bond lengths are comparable across the three salts, and the S—C—S bond angles are consistently between 102 and 106°. Hirshfeld surface analyses reveal that each structure is dominated by hydrogen-based intermolecular contacts, supplemented by anion-specific interactions such as I...H in (I), O...H in (II), and F...H in (III). These contacts organize the ions into mono-periodic ribbon- or chain-like arrangements. No significant π–π stacking is observed.more » « less
