Abstract nT, the Bastille Day event (July 2000), and the 20 November 2003 superstorm. It is shown that the new method significantly reduces the statistical bias of the original NN algorithm toward weaker storms. In the DM approach the magnetic field is reconstructed using a small NN subset of the large historical database, with the subset numberSym‐H < −300 being still much larger than any simultaneous multiprobe observation number. This allows one to fit with observations a very flexible magnetic field model using basis function expansions for equatorial and field‐aligned currents, and at the same time, to keep the model sensitive to storm variability. This also allows one to calculate the plasma pressure by integrating the quasi‐static force balance equation with the isotropic plasma approximation. For strong storms of particular importance becomes the resolution of the eastward current, which prevents the divergence of the pressure integral. It is shown that in spite of the strong reduction of the dominant NN number in the new weighted NN algorithm to capture strong storm features, it is still possible to resolve the eastward current and to retrieve plasma pressure distributions. It is found that the pressure peak for strong storms may be as close asK N N ≫ 1≈ 2.1 to Earth and its value may exceed 300 nPa.R E -
Abstract We study the variations of the topside ionospheric ion density measured by Defense Meteorological Satellite Program satellites during the intense magnetic storm on 7–10 November 2004. It is found for the first time that quasi‐periodic enhancements in the ion density with a period of ∼6 hr occur nearly simultaneously at 0630, 0830, and 0930 local time in the dawn sector during the storm main phase with southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The quasi‐periodic density enhancements extend from the southern subauroral latitudes to the northern subauroral latitudes. In the dusk sector, the topside ion density during the storm main phase is increased at middle latitudes for ∼12 hr but shows decrease or relatively small increase over the magnetic equator, indicating that penetration electric fields dominate the ion density redistribution. Similar quasi‐periodic enhancements in the topside ion density are also observed in the dawn sector during other intense magnetic storms. The solar wind and IMF do not have quasi‐periodic variations in this storm case. Periodic processes in geospace, such as periodic substorms in the magnetosphere, waves and tides in the atmosphere, and traveling ionospheric disturbances, cannot explain the observed periodic enhancements of the ionospheric ion density. We suggest that the magnetosphere‐ionospheric‐thermospheric system may have an intrinsic period of ∼6 hr and that oscillations of the magnetosphere‐ionospheric‐thermospheric system with this period can be excited during intense magnetic storms, although the mechanisms for the generation of the long‐periodic oscillations are not understood.

Abstract Subauroral polarization streams (SAPS) prefer geomagnetically disturbed conditions and strongly correlate with geomagnetic indexes. However, the temporal evolution of SAPS and its relationship with dynamic and structured ring current and particle injection are still not well understood. In this study, we performed detailed analysis of temporal evolution of SAPS during a moderate storm on 18 May 2013 using conjugate observations of SAPS from the Van Allen Probes (VAP) and the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN). The large‐scale SAPS (LS‐SAPS) formed during the main phase of this storm and decayed due to the northward turning of the interplanetary magnetic field. A mesoscale (approximately several hundreds of kilometers zonally) enhancement of SAPS was observed by SuperDARN at 0456 UT. In the conjugate magnetosphere, a large SAPS electric field (∼8 mV/m) pointing radially outward, a local magnetic field dip, and a dispersionless ion injection were observed simultaneously by VAP‐A at
L shell = 3.5 andM L T = 20. The particle injection observed by VAP‐A is likely associated with the particle injection observed by the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 15 near 20 MLT. Magnetic perturbations observed by the ground magnetometers and flow reversals observed by SuperDARN reveal that this mesoscale enhancement of SAPS developed near the Harang reversal and before the substorm onset. The observed complex signatures in both space and ground can be explained by a two‐loop current wedge generated by the perturbed plasma pressure gradient and the diamagnetic effect of the structured ring current following particle injection. -
Abstract The occurrence of St. Patrick's Day (17 March) geomagnetic storms during two different years (2013 and 2015) with similar solar flux levels but varying storm intensity provided an opportunity to compare and contrast the responses of the ionosphere‐thermosphere (IT) system to different levels of geomagnetic activity. The evolution of positive ionospheric storms at the southern polar stations Bharati (76.6°S MLAT) and Davis (76.2°S MLAT) and its causative connection to the solar wind driving mechanisms during these storms has been investigated in this paper. During the main phase of both the storms, significant enhancements in TEC and phase scintillation were observed in the magnetic noon/ midnight period at Bharati and Davis. The TEC in the midnight sector on 17 March 2015 was significantly higher compared to that on 17 March 2013, in line with the storm intensity. The TEC enhancements during both the storm events are associated with the formation of the storm‐enhanced densities (SEDs)/tongue of ionization (TOI). The strong and sustained magnetopause erosion led to the prevalence of stronger storm time electric fields (prompt penetration electric field (PPEF)/subauroral polarization streams (SAPS)) for long duration on 17 March 2015. This combined with the action of neutral winds at midlatitudes favored the formation of higher plasma densities in the regions of SED formation on this day. The same was weaker during the 17 March 2013 storm due to the fast fluctuating nature of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF)
. This study shows that the duration and extent of magnetopause erosion play an important role in the spatiotemporal evolution of the plasma density distribution in the high‐midlatitude ionosphere.B z -
Abstract Using the global Lagrangian version of the piecewise parabolic method‐magnetohydrodynamic (PPMLR‐MHD) model, we simulate two consecutive storms in December 2015, a moderate storm on 14–15 December and a strong storm on 19–22 December, and calculate the radial diffusion coefficients (
) from the simulated ultralow frequency waves. We find that even though the strong storm leads to more enhancedD LL andB z power than the moderate storm, the two storms share in common a lot of features on the azimuthal mode structure and power spectrum of ultralow frequency waves. For both storms, the totalE φ andB z power is better correlated with the solar wind dynamic pressure in the storm initial phase and more correlated withE φ AE index in the recovery phase. wave power is shown to be mostly distributed in low mode numbers, whileB z power spreads over a wider range of modes. Furthermore, theE φ andB z power spectral densities are found to be higher at higherE φ L regions, with a strongerL dependence in the spectra. The estimatedB z based on MHD fields shows that inside the magnetopause, the contribution from electric fields is larger than or comparable to that from magnetic fields, and our event‐specific MHD‐basedD LL can be smaller than some previous empiricalD LL estimations by more than an order of magnitude. At last, by validating against in situ observations from Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft, our MHD results are found to generally well reproduce the totalD LL fields and wave power for both storms, while theB z power is underestimated in the MHD simulations.E φ
