Title: Paths through Data: Successes and Future Directions in Supporting Student Reasoning about Environmental Racism
We report on a curriculum development project in which students explore environmental racism through data. Recognizing that quantitative data alone is insufficient to understand the sociohistorical contexts of racism, we draw from syncretic approaches to learning that put everyday experiences and qualitative evidence into direct conversation with quantitative datasets through storytelling. Through two focal cases, we demonstrate how one student leveraged personal experience to engage in deep integrative analysis of data, while another with fewer perceived personal connections to environmental racism focused more specifically on patterns, with less structural or racial analysis. Implications of the analysis include the need to carefully attend to the use of quantitative data related to race and to scaffold the integration of other sources of information with quantitative data sets.  more » « less

    In this paper, we describe and analyze a workshop developed for a work training program called DataWorks. In this workshop, data workers chose a topic of their interest, sourced and processed data on that topic, and used that data to create presentations. Drawing from discourses of data literacy; epistemic agency and lived experience; and critical race theory, we analyze the workshops’ activities and outcomes. Through this analysis, three themes emerge: the tensions between epistemic agency and the context of work, encountering the ordinariness of racism through data work, and understanding the personal as communal and intersectional. Finally, critical race theory also prompts us to consider the very notions of data literacy that undergird our workshop activities. From this analysis, we ofer a series of suggestions for approaching designing data literacy activities, taking into account critical race theory.

This Complete Evidence-based Practice paper describes first-year engineering students’ perceptions, and specifically their shifts in those perspectives, towards the role of automation and data science in society as well as the racial implications of how those human-made systems are implemented and deployed. As part of a larger curricular change being made to a first-year engineering course in computation, this paper specifically examines two reflection assignments where students wrote, at different points in the semester (week 2 and week 12), regarding their personal questions and understandings related to the role of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and automation in society and its relationship to systemic racism and racial impact of engineering and technological systems. For analysis, the submissions were compiled, and comparisons of the two moments in the semester were coded and analyzed for thematic commonalities seen in student written responses and the overall progression of students’ thinking. Results showed commonalities among students' initial reactions to the video such as questions surrounding who is responsible for the impact of designed technologies along with a strong ideological separation between humans and machines. Juxtaposed with the week 2 assignments, week 12 findings showed commonalities in students’ progress such as an increased awareness of the complexity of racialized sociotechnical problems, stronger emotional responses, more refined ideas about potential solutions, and realizing the systemic nature of racism. Findings suggest that the students met learning goals regarding an awareness of sociotechnical problems and catalyzed (early) critical thinking on how to address them through engineering. Implications from this work demonstrate that first-year students are capable of wrestling with difficult topics such as racism in technology, while still meeting ABET requirements within the course for data science and coding.

  3. The COVID-19 pandemic has coincided with a powerful upsurge in antiracist activism in the United States, linking many forms and consequences of racism to public and environmental health. This commentary develops the concept of eco-pandemic injustice to explain interrelationships between the pandemic and socioecological systems, demonstrating how COVID-19 both reveals and deepens structural inequalities that form along lines of environmental health. Using Pellow’s critical environmental justice theory, we examine how the crisis has made more visible and exacerbated links between racism, poverty, and health while providing opportunities to enact change through collective embodied health movements. We describe new collaborations and the potential for meaningful opportunities at the intersections between health, antiracist, environmental, and political movements that are advocating for the types of transformational change described by critical environmental justice.

  4. We focus on the use of flourishing as a new measure in studies of pathways in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematical) fields. While the concept of flourishing is promising, the concept may need careful interrogation to ensure it takes structural and personal (cultural, religious, socioeconomic, and racial) differences into account. Our longitudinal study explores emerging adult’s educational and career pathways with careful attention to structural inequities, enabling us to productively explore the concept of flourishing in a larger systemic context. Drawing from a set of qualitative interviews with our participants, we explore the ways that our sample of emerging adults (N= 30), predominantly people of color, define and discuss flourishing. The concept resonated with our diverse participants, and a substantial number did report flourishing. But despite the regularity with which the participants described experiencing racism and microaggressions, they did not often mention those harmful experiences when discussing flourishing. We caution that flourishing data on its own may provide an overly rosy image of the pathways and development, especially of young people of color. Our data suggest that it may be especially important to examine flourishing in context with other measures that can flesh out a fuller picture of well-being, especially in relation to race, racism, sexism, or any other experiences related to personal identities. In particular, instruments should be carefully designed to ensure–especially for emerging adults–that all aspects of their lives and identities can be fully understood.

  5. Community science has increased in popularity in communities where residents hope to investigate the relationship between environmental issues and personal health. This study partnered with neighborhoods in the most polluted residential zip code in the US to conduct community science air quality monitoring. We conducted 60 semi-structured interviews after two monitoring deployments to understand participants’ subjective experiences of pollution exposure, their engagement with low-cost air quality monitors, and their data interpretation. We utilize the environmental health concept ‘exposure experience’ to analyze how participants use personal monitors, understand their data, and reinterpret their pollution exposure as a result. We further explore how participants’ understandings are circumscribed by the technological features of low-cost monitors. We find that participants adopt both protective and mitigating behavioral changes based on information gained from personal experiments and hypothesis testing while using the monitors. Of their own accord, 40% of participants in this study adopted mitigation behaviors after identifying sources that impacted their personal air quality. Our analysis reveals that real-time data accessibility through low-cost monitors builds exposure awareness and enables residents of environmental justice communities to test, validate, or invalidate sensory experiences and challenge existing assumptions. These findings point to specific pathways for using low-cost monitors to support individual decision-making and contribute to behavioral change. Findings also identify some limitations of low-cost monitors; designers of low-cost monitors should consider how composite Air Quality Scores may encourage community scientists to equally value scientifically-established pollutants (e.g., PM) with less scientifically-established pollutants (e.g., TVOCs), without additional scientific training and health-related information.
