Abstract z ∼ 1.7 and three galaxies atz ∼ 2.5, and were selected as likely to yield significant auroral-line detections. Even with long integration times, detection of the auroral lines remains challenging. We stack the spectra together into subsets based on redshift, improving the signal-to-noise ratio on the [Oiii ]λ 4364 auroral emission line and, in turn, enabling a direct measurement of the oxygen abundance for each stack. We compare these measurements to commonly employed strong-line ratios alongside measurements from the literature. We find that the stacks fall within the distribution ofz > 1 literature measurements, but a larger sample size is needed to robustly constrain the relationships between strong-line ratios and oxygen abundance at high redshift. We additionally report detections of [Oi ]λ 6302 for nine individual galaxies and composite spectra of 21 targets in the MOSFIRE pointings. We plot their line ratios on the [Oiii ]λ 5008/Hβ versus [Oi ]λ 6302/Hα diagnostic diagram, comparing our targets to local galaxies and Hii regions. We find that the [Oi ]/Hα ratios in our sample of galaxies are consistent with being produced in gas ionized byα -enhanced massive stars, as has been previously inferred for rapidly forming galaxies at early cosmic times. -
Abstract We report the discovery of two companion sources to a strongly lensed galaxy SPT0418-47 (“ring”) at redshift 4.225, targeted by the JWST Early Release Science program. We confirm that these sources are at a similar redshift to the ring based on H
α detected in the NIRSpec spectrum and [Cii ]λ 158μ m line from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Using multiple spectral lines detected in JWST/NIRSpec, the rest-frame optical to infrared images from NIRCam and MIRI and far-infrared dust continuum detected by ALMA, we argue that the newly discovered sources are actually lensed images of the same companion galaxy SPT0418-SE, hereafter referred to “SE,” located within 5 kpc in the source plane of the ring. The star formation rate derived using [Cii ] and the dust continuum puts a lower limit of 17M ☉yr−1, while the SFRHα is estimated to be >2 times lower, thereby confirming that SE is a dust-obscured star-forming galaxy. Analysis using optical strong line diagnostics suggests that SE has near-solar elemental abundance, while the ring appears to have supersolar metallicity O/H and N/O. We attempt to reconcile the high metallicity in this system by invoking early onset of star formation with continuous high star-forming efficiency or by suggesting that optical strong line diagnostics need revision at high redshift. We suggest that SPT0418-47 resides in a massive dark-matter halo with yet-to-be-discovered neighbors. This work highlights the importance of joint analysis of JWST and ALMA data for a deep and complete picture of the early universe. -
Abstract We analyze the cool gas in and around 14 nearby galaxies (at
z < 0.1) mapped with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV MaNGA survey by measuring absorption lines produced by gas in spectra of background quasars/active galactic nuclei at impact parameters of 0–25 effective radii from the galactic centers. Using Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, we detect absorption at the galactic redshift and measure or constrain column densities of neutral (Hi , Ni , Oi , and Ari ), low-ionization (Siii , Sii , Cii , Nii , and Feii ), and high-ionization (Siiii , Feiii , Nv , and Ovi ) species for 11 galaxies. We derive the ionization parameter and ionization-corrected metallicity usingcloudy photoionization models. The Hi column density ranges from ∼1013to ∼1020cm−2and decreases with impact parameter forr ≳R e . Galaxies with higher stellar mass have weaker Hi absorption. Comparing absorption velocities with MaNGA radial velocity maps of ionized gas line emissions in galactic disks, we find that the neutral gas seen in absorption corotates with the disk out to ∼10R e . Sight lines with lower elevation angles show lower metallicities, consistent with the metallicity gradient in the disk derived from MaNGA maps. Higher-elevation angle sight lines show higher ionization, lower Hi column density, supersolar metallicity, and velocities consistent with the direction of galactic outflow. Our data offer the first detailed comparisons of circumgalactic medium (CGM) properties (kinematics and metallicity) with extrapolations of detailed galaxy maps from integral field spectroscopy; similar studies for larger samples are needed to more fully understand how galaxies interact with their CGM. -
Abstract J1044+0353 is considered a local analog of the young galaxies that ionized the intergalactic medium at high redshift due to its low mass, low metallicity, high specific star formation rate, and strong high-ionization emission lines. We use integral field spectroscopy to trace the propagation of the starburst across this small galaxy using Balmer emission- and absorption-line equivalent widths and find a poststarburst population (∼15–20 Myr) roughly 1 kpc east of the much younger, compact starburst (∼3–4 Myr). Using the direct electron temperature method to map the O/H abundance ratio, we find similar metallicities (1–3
σ ) between the starburst and poststarburst regions but with a significant dispersion of about 0.3 dex within the latter. We also map the Doppler shift and width of the strong emission lines. Over scales several times the size of the galaxy, we discover a velocity gradient parallel to the galaxy’s minor axis. The steepest gradients (∼30 km s−1kpc−1) appear to emanate from the oldest stellar association. We identify the velocity gradient as an outflow viewed edge on based on the increased line width and skew in a biconical region. We discuss how this outflow and the gas inflow necessary to trigger the starburst affect the chemical evolution of J1044+0353. We conclude that the stellar associations driving the galactic outflow are spatially offset from the youngest association, and a chemical evolution model with a metal-enriched wind requires a more realistic inflow rate than a homogeneous chemical evolution model. -

M ⊙yr−1kpc−2, SPT 0346–52 (z = 5.7) is the most intensely star-forming galaxy discovered by the South Pole Telescope. In this paper, we expand on previous spatially resolved studies, using ALMA observations of dust continuum, [Nii ] 205μ m, [Cii ] 158μ m, [Oi ] 146μ m, and undetected [Nii ] 122μ m and [Oi ] 63μ m emission to study the multiphase interstellar medium (ISM) in SPT 0346–52. We use pixelated, visibility-based lens modeling to reconstruct the source-plane emission. We also model the source-plane emission using the photoionization codecloudy and find a supersolar metallicity system. We calculateT dust= 48.3 K andλ peak= 80μ m and see line deficits in all five lines. The ionized gas is less dense than comparable galaxies, withn e < 32 cm−3, while ∼20% of the [Cii ] 158μ m emission originates from the ionized phase of the ISM. We also calculate the masses of several phases of the ISM. We find that molecular gas dominates the mass of the ISM in SPT 0346–52, with the molecular gas mass ∼4× higher than the neutral atomic gas mass and ∼100× higher than the ionized gas mass.
