Abstract x Lix )2Se2layered phases. With increased LiOH/LiCl ratio or reaction temperature, Li partially substituted Ag to form solid solutions of Sr(Ag1−x Lix )2Se2withx up to 0.45. In addition, a new type of intergrowth compound [Sr3Se2][(Ag1−x Lix )2Se2] was synthesized upon further reaction of Sr(Ag1−x Lix )2Se2with SrSe. Both Sr(Ag1−x Lix )2Se2and [Sr3Se2][(Ag1−x Lix )2Se2] exhibit a direct band gap, which increases with increasing Li substitution (x ). Therefore, the band gap of Sr(Ag1−x Lix )2Se2can be precisely tuned via fine‐tuningx that is controlled by only the flux ratio and temperature. -
Trigonal Cu2BaGe1−
x Snx Se4(CBGTSe) has recently gained interest as a potential photovoltaic absorber to target mitigation of antisite defect formation in Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4. This study examines partial substitution of Cu by Ag as a potential approach to tune the properties of Ag‐incorporated CBGTSe in the following aspects: 1) phase stability and crystal structure as a function of Ag content; 2) film morphology and grain structure; 3) charge carrier properties; 4) band positions; and 5) charge carrier kinetics and recombination. Up to 20% of Cu can be substituted by Ag in CBGTSe, while above 20% a phase mixture appears. Increasing Ag content induces larger average grain size and reduced hole carrier densities. In contrast, photoelectron spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements reveal negligible impact of Ag substitution on ionization potential (≈5.4 eV) and electron affinity (≈3.7 eV). Also, Ag content offers negligible impact on carrier lifetimes (few ns). Consistent with these fundamental properties, solar cells based on two different Ag/(Ag + Cu) ratios (≈0% and ≈20%) show comparable power conversion efficiencies (≈2.7–2.8%). These results indicate that CBGTSe films and solar cells may be less sensitive to Ag substitution compared to Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4, at least at the current level of absorber and device optimization. -
Developing chemically and thermally stable, highly efficient green-emitting inorganic phosphors is a significant challenge in solid-state lighting. One accessible pathway for achieving green emission is by forming a solid solution with superior blue-emitting materials. In this work, we demonstrate that the cyan-emission ( λ em = 481 nm) of the BaScO 2 F:Eu 2+ perovskite can be red-shifted by forming a solid solution following (Ba 1− x Sr x ) 0.98 Eu 0.02 ScO 2 F ( x = 0, 0.075, 0.15, 0.25, 0.33, 0.40). Although green emission is achieved ( λ em = 516 nm) as desired, the thermal quenching (TQ) resistance is reduced, and the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) drops by 65%. Computation reveals the source of these changes. Surprisingly, a basic density functional theory analysis shows the gradual Sr Ba substitution has negligible effects on the band gap ( E g ) energy, suggesting the activation energy barrier for the thermal ionization quenching remains unchanged, while the nearly constant Debye temperature indicates no loss of average structural rigidity to explain the decrease in the PLQY. Instead, temperature-dependent ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations show that gradual changes of the Eu 2+ ion's local coordination environment rigidity are responsible for the drop in the observed TQ and PLQY. These results express the need to computationally analyze the local rare-earth environment as a function of temperature to understand the fundamental origin of optical properties in new inorganic phosphors.more » « less

Abstract With the increasing use of Li batteries for storage, their safety issues and energy densities are attracting considerable attention. Recently, replacing liquid organic electrolytes with solid‐state electrolytes (SSE) has been hailed as the key to developing safe and high‐energy‐density Li batteries. In particular, Li1+
x Alx Ti2−x (PO4)3(LATP) has been identified as a very attractive SSE for Li batteries due to its excellent electrochemical stability, low production costs, and good chemical compatibility. However, interfacial reactions with electrodes and poor thermal stability at high temperatures severely restrict the practical use of LATP in solid‐state batteries (SSB). Herein, a systematic review of recent advances in LATP for SSBs is provided. This review starts with a brief introduction to the development history of LATP and then summarizes its structure, ion transport mechanism, and synthesis methods. Challenges (e.g., intrinsic brittleness, interfacial resistance, and compatibility) and corresponding solutions (ionic substitution, additives, protective layers, composite electrolytes, etc.) that are critical for practical applications are then discussed. Last, an outlook on the future research direction of LATP‐based SSB is provided. -
Abstract The potential for creating hierarchical domain structures, or mixtures of energetically degenerate phases with distinct patterns that can be modified continually, in ferroelectric thin films offers a pathway to control their mesoscale structure beyond lattice‐mismatch strain with a substrate. Here, it is demonstrated that varying the strontium content provides deterministic strain‐driven control of hierarchical domain structures in Pb1−
x Srx TiO3 solid‐solution thin films wherein two types,c /a anda 1/a 2, of nanodomains can coexist. Combining phase‐field simulations, epitaxial thin‐film growth, detailed structural, domain, and physical‐property characterization, it is observed that the system undergoes a gradual transformation (with increasing strontium content) from droplet‐likea 1/a 2 domains in ac /a domain matrix, to a connected‐labyrinth geometry ofc /a domains, to a disconnected labyrinth structure of the same, and, finally, to droplet‐likec /a domains in ana 1/a 2 domain matrix. A relationship between the different mixed‐phase modulation patterns and its topological nature is established. Annealing the connected‐labyrinth structure leads to domain coarsening forming distinctive regions of parallelc /a anda 1/a 2 domain stripes, offering additional design flexibility. Finally, it is found that the connected‐labyrinth domain patterns exhibit the highest dielectric permittivity.
