In this paper, we study the [Formula: see text]-contraction property of small extremal shocks for 1-d systems of hyperbolic conservation laws endowed with a single convex entropy, when subjected to large perturbations. We show that the weight coefficient [Formula: see text] can be chosen with amplitude proportional to the size of the shock. The main result of this paper is a key building block in the companion paper [G. Chen, S. G. Krupa and A. F. Vasseur, Uniqueness and weak-BV stability for [Formula: see text] conservation laws, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 246(1) (2022) 299–332] in which uniqueness and BV-weak stability results for [Formula: see text] systems of hyperbolic conservation laws are proved.

Uniqueness and Weak-BV Stability for $$2\times 2$$ Conservation Laws
Abstract Let a 1-d system of hyperbolic conservation laws, with two unknowns, be endowed with a convex entropy. We consider the family of small BV functions which are global solutions of this equation. For any small BV initial data, such global solutions are known to exist. Moreover, they are known to be unique among BV solutions verifying either the so-called Tame Oscillation Condition, or the Bounded Variation Condition on space-like curves. In this paper, we show that these solutions are stable in a larger class of weak (and possibly not even BV ) solutions of the system. This result extends the classical weak-strong uniqueness results which allow comparison to a smooth solution. Indeed our result extends these results to a weak- BV uniqueness result, where only one of the solutions is supposed to be small BV , and the other solution can come from a large class. As a consequence of our result, the Tame Oscillation Condition, and the Bounded Variation Condition on space-like curves are not necessary for the uniqueness of solutions in the BV theory, in the case of systems with 2 unknowns. The method is $$L^2$$ L 2 based, and builds up from the theory of a-contraction with shifts, where suitable weight functions a are generated via the front tracking method.

The Minkowski problem for a class of unbounded closed convex sets is considered. This is equivalent to a Monge-Ampère equation on a bounded convex open domain with possibly non-integrable given data. A complete solution (necessary and sufficient condition for existence and uniqueness) in dimension 2 is presented. In higher dimensions, partial results are demonstrated.more » « less

The goal of this paper is to prove a comparison principle for viscosity solutions of semilinear Hamilton–Jacobi equations in the space of probability measures. The method involves leveraging differentiability properties of the 2-Wasserstein distance in the doubling of variables argument, which is done by introducing a further entropy penalization that ensures that the relevant optima are achieved at positive, Lipschitz continuous densities with finite Fischer information. This allows to prove uniqueness and stability of viscosity solutions in the class of bounded Lipschitz continuous (with respect to the 1-Wasserstein distance) functions. The result does not appeal to a mean field control formulation of the equation, and, as such, applies to equations with nonconvex Hamiltonians and measure-dependent volatility. For convex Hamiltonians that derive from a potential, we prove that the value function associated with a suitable mean-field optimal control problem with nondegenerate idiosyncratic noise is indeed the unique viscosity solution.more » « less

Abstract Convergence of a finite element method with mass-lumping and flux upwinding is formulated for solving the immiscible two-phase flow problem in porous media. The method approximates directly the wetting phase pressure and saturation, which are the primary unknowns. Well-posedness is obtained in [J. Numer. Math., 29(2), 2021]. Theoretical convergence is proved via a compactness argument. The numerical phase saturation converges strongly to a weak solution in L 2 in space and in time whereas the numerical phase pressures converge strongly to weak solutions in L 2 in space almost everywhere in time. The proof is not straightforward because of the degeneracy of the phase mobilities and the unboundedness of the derivative of the capillary pressure.more » « less

Abstract Let Ω ⊂ ℝ n + 1 {\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+1}} , n ≥ 2 {n\geq 2} , be a 1-sided non-tangentially accessible domain (also known as uniform domain), that is, Ω satisfies the interior Corkscrew and Harnack chain conditions, which are respectively scale-invariant/quantitative versions of openness and path-connectedness. Let us assume also that Ω satisfies the so-called capacity density condition, a quantitative version of the fact that all boundary points are Wiener regular. Consider two real-valued (non-necessarily symmetric) uniformly elliptic operators L 0 u = - div ( A 0 ∇ u ) and L u = - div ( A ∇ u ) L_{0}u=-\operatorname{div}(A_{0}\nabla u)\quad\text{and}\quad Lu=-%\operatorname{div}(A\nabla u) in Ω, and write ω L 0 {\omega_{L_{0}}} and ω L {\omega_{L}} for the respective associated elliptic measures. The goal of this article and its companion[M. Akman, S. Hofmann, J. M. Martell and T. Toro,Perturbation of elliptic operators in 1-sided NTA domains satisfying the capacity density condition, preprint 2021, https://arxiv.org/abs/1901.08261v3 ]is to find sufficient conditions guaranteeing that ω L {\omega_{L}} satisfies an A ∞ {A_{\infty}} -condition or a RH q {\operatorname{RH}_{q}} -condition with respect to ω L 0 {\omega_{L_{0}}} . In this paper, we are interested in obtaininga square function and non-tangential estimates for solutions of operators as before. We establish that bounded weak null-solutions satisfy Carleson measure estimates, with respect to the associated elliptic measure. We also show that for every weak null-solution, the associated square function can be controlled by the non-tangential maximal function in any Lebesgue space with respect to the associated elliptic measure. These results extend previous work ofDahlberg, Jerison and Kenig and are fundamental for the proof of the perturbation results in the paper cited above.more » « less
