Title: Preparation and Characterization of N , N′ ‐Dialkyl‐1,3‐propanedialdiminium Chlorides, N , N′ ‐Dialkyl‐1,3‐propanedialdimines, and Lithium N , N′ ‐Dialkyl‐1,3‐propanedialdiminates
Abstract

We describe convenient preparations ofN,N′‐dialkyl‐1,3‐propanedialdiminium chlorides,N,N′‐dialkyl‐1,3‐propanedialdimines, and lithiumN,N′‐dialkyl‐1,3‐propanedialdiminates in which the alkyl groups are methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, ortert‐butyl. For the dialdiminium salts, the N2C3backbone is always in thetrans‐s‐transconfiguration. Three isomers are present in solution except for thetert‐butyl compound, for which only two isomers are present; increasing the steric bulk of theN‐alkyl substituents shifts the equilibrium away from the (Z,Z) isomer in favor of the (E,Z), and (E,E) isomers. For the neutral dialdimines, crystal structures show that the methyl and isopropyl compounds adopt the (E,Z) form, whereas thetert‐butyl compound is in the (E,E) form. In aprotic solvents all four dialdimines (as well as the lithium dialdiminate salts) adoptcis‐s‐cisconformations in which there presumably is either an intramolecular hydrogen bond (or a lithium cation) between the two nitrogen atoms.

The dialkyl malonate derived 1,3‐diphosphines R2C(CH2PPh2)2(R=a, Me;b, Et;c,n‐Bu;d,n‐Dec;e, Bn;f,p‐tolCH2) are combined with (p‐tol3P)2PtCl2ortrans‐(p‐tol3P)2Pt((C≡C)2H)2to give the chelatescis‐(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)PtCl2(2 af, 94–69 %) orcis‐(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)Pt((C≡C)2H)2(3 af, 97–54 %). Complexes3 adare also available from2 adand excess 1,3‐butadiyne in the presence of CuI (cat.) and excess HNEt2(87–65 %). Under similar conditions,2and3react to give the title compounds [(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)[Pt(C≡C)2]4(4 af; 89–14 % (64 % avg)), from which ammonium salts such as the co‐product [H2NEt2]+Clare challenging to remove. Crystal structures of4 a,bshow skew rhombus as opposed to square Pt4geometries. The NMR and IR properties of4 afare similar to those of mono‐ or diplatinum model compounds. However, cyclic voltammetry gives only irreversible oxidations. As compared to mono‐platinum or Pt(C≡C)2Pt species, the UV‐visible spectra show much more intense and red‐shifted bands. Time dependent DFT calculations define the transitions and principal orbitals involved. Electrostatic potential surface maps reveal strongly negative Pt4C16cores that likely facilitate ammonium cation binding. Analogous electronic properties of Pt3C12and Pt5C20homologs and selected equilibria are explored computationally.

  2. Abstract

The 1,4‐diacyloxylation of 1,3‐cyclohexadiene (CHD) affords valuable stereochemically defined scaffolds for natural product and pharmaceutical synthesis. Existingcis‐selective diacyloxylation protocols require superstoichiometric quantities of benzoquinone (BQ) or MnO2, which limit process sustainability and large‐scale application. In this report, reaction development and mechanistic studies are described that overcome these limitations by pairing catalytic BQ withtert‐butyl hydroperoxide as the stoichiometric oxidant. Catalytic quantities of bromide enable a switch fromtranstocisdiastereoselectivity. A catalyst with a 1:2 Pd:Br ratio supports highcisselectivity while retaining good rate and product yield. Further studies enable replacement of BQ with hydroquinone (HQ) as a source of cocatalyst, avoiding the handling of volatile and toxic BQ in large‐scale applications.

    N , N ′-Di- tert -butylcarbodiimide, Me 3 CN=C=NCMe 3 , undergoes reductive cleavage in the presence of the Gd II complex, [K(18-crown-6) 2 ][Gd II (N R 2 ) 3 ] ( R = SiMe 3 ), to form a new type of ligand, the tert -butylcyanamide anion, (Me 3 CNCN) − . This new ligand can bind metals with one or two donor atoms as demonstrated by the isolation of a single crystal containing potassium salts of both end-on and side-on bound tert -butylcyanamide anions, (Me 3 CNCN) − . The crystal contains [K(18-crown-6)(H 2 O)][NCNCMe 3 - kN ], in which one ( t BuNCN) − anion is coordinated end-on to potassium ligated by 18-crown-6 and water, as well as [K(18-crown-6)][η 2 -NCNCMe 3 ], in which an 18-crown-6 potassium is coordinated side-on to the terminal N—C linkage. This single crystal also contains one equivalent of 1,3-di- tert -butyl urea, (C 9 H 20 N 2 O), which is involved in hydrogen bonding that may stabilize the whole assembly, namely, aqua( tert -butylcyanamidato)(1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane)potassium(I)–( tert -butylcyanamidato)(1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane)potassium(I)– N , N ′-di- tert -butylcarbodiimide (1/1/1) [K(C 5 H 9 N 2 )(C 12 H 24 O 6 )]·[K(C 5 H 9 N 2 )(C 12 H 24 O 6 )(H 2 O)]·C 9 H 20 N 2 .

Tolnaftate, a classic antifungal compound, has been found to crystallize from 1:1 ( v / v ) acetone–water as large flat colorless needles in the centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P 2 1 / c . These crystals contain a 50:50 mixture of the (+ ap ,− sp ,+ ac ,− ac ) and (− ap ,+ sp ,− ac ,+ ac ) conformers. The bond lengths in the central CNOS unit are 1.3444 (19), 1.3556 (18) and 1.6567 (15) Å for C—N, C—O and C—S, respectively, and the CNOS and C 3 N moieties are flat and nearly coplanar with each other, consistent with the C—N bond possessing partial double-bond character. Tolnaftate and the four most closely related N , N -disubstituted thiocarbamates in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) all exist as E -conformational isomers in the solid state. Among these five compounds, tolnaftate is the only one in which the N -tolyl moiety is positioned trans to the S atom, i.e. the N -aryl substituent in each of the other compounds is positioned cis to their respective S atom. Notably, and more importantly, our experimental X-ray structure is unlike all prior theoretical models available for tolnaftate. The implication, either directly or indirectly, is that some of those theoretical models used in earlier studies to explain the spectroscopic properties of tolnaftate and to suggest which protein–ligand interactions are responsible for the binding of tolnaftate to squalene epoxidase are either inappropriate or structurally unreasonable, i.e. the results and conclusions from those prior studies are in need of critical reassessment.
